.... But a death sentence is a legal means to exact revenge on someone after they committed a crime.

It doesn't resurrect the person who was wrongly killed.
So how about the Larry Niven solution? Part them out and call it restitution.

If they take a life, they shall give life with their organs.
Thank god we have the 8th Amendment then.
That's why it should be called restitution, not punishment.

Tidis, maybe you don't understand the term "gun-free zone" and what it means in regards to Chicago.

It's not only illegal to buy a gun in Chicago, it's also illegal to own or carry a gun in Chicago.

And yet, Chicago is one of the largest cities when it comes to gun violence.....

So, how's those gun laws working again?
Pretty well for gun retailers in Indiana.

No, it isn't. Guess you don't afterall.
Present all the arguments you want, it's fine, but don't say others can't understand your nation when you clearly can't understand theirs either.
I didn't say that people can't, I said that they don't.

Yet it is, and I do.

Define "gun nut."

Speaking of laws, are we going to talk about ones that could actually fly here, or are we going to pretend that banning all guns in the U.S. is even remotely in the realm of possibility?

Give it a few more decades, hell there's already some areas where there's effective bans.

No law has the intended impact.

The law is there to stop everyone from doing something. Obvious that never has ever happened in the history of humanity. This obviously doesn't make them pointless.

what then is the point?

To feel good about oneself, thinking that by passing more laws and regulations, they might hold this time.

I mean, if the last 1993 times failed, then the 1994th time will succeed, right?

edit: and I think this is the most interesting topic in a long while; people are rarely willing to discuss philosophy

thank you!

It's really about the fundamental nature of laws, their effects.

I would really like to get into the disproportional nature of their enforcement etc....

I meant ones that could actually be passed in the first place. We're not even to the point of discussing potential impact of any real laws because people would rather discuss the possibility of things that will never happen.

Right, so then what is with this dog and pony show that we call the law?

what purpose does it serve?

to create an illusion that we are doing something about societal problems.

It's also the definition of practice.

with practice you would expect to get better at what you were practicing, like tennis as an example.

but if you practice tennis and expect to learn levitation from it...

So, we should pass laws based on their theoretical probability of passage?
