Also, they answered the two biggest questions at the end, the first being can you switch between English and JP voiceovers with appropriate subtitles, and the answer is yes you can.

Man this game is getting absolutely destroyed by Japanese consumer reviews.

The most common problems being cited:

-Poor camera

-Small scale of the story: Feels like a fight between villages rather than the war between countries it is supposed to be.

-Lazy storytelling: Cutscenes simply tell you about that factions/ships are fighting each other, but there's no actual shots of the action

-No ability to skip cutscenes: A problem when you have to retry because of the erratic difficulty level

-Small scale of the world: Only one world (you go into Space only to come right back down to the same place) with loads of backtracking (you are still in the same places at the end of the game as you are at the beginning)

-The game lets you control various characters, but some characters stand at the edge of the battlefield (the zone you stand in to run away) when a battle breaks out. The result is that if you choose certain characters you auto-run from battles when they break out (how did they mess that up?!) -- essentially making it impossible to ACTUALLY play with some of the characters in battle

-Too many special effects: Can't make heads or tails of what the heck is happening in battle

The general consensus is the game was under-budgeted or rushed (or both). TBH I'm contemplating picking up the import because I just can't fathom how the game can be as bad as everyone is saying.

The game is getting terrible reviews in Japan. Most notably, the response seems to be that the game feels very low-budget and typical playthroughs are 20 hours or less with a lot around 15-16 hours (and this is saying something since you can't skip cutscenes). Also, the ending is very abrupt, with no real climax, and there are only a handful of towns. Most reviewers like SO4 more (which is saying something) because it is much deeper. Some people indicated that they felt SO5 was testing the waters, so to speak, to see if there was any interest.
