Ok, here's a thought, if you don't like the flag, and find it extremely offensive....why the hell do you have it as your nationality flag here? You must really hate the american flag if you'd rather be represented by one that you despise. Just my opinion.

My server was recently merged and I found myself playing around with settings. In the process, I reconnected with players I once knew in High School over a decade ago and even those growing up back in SoCal.

It's not on par with finding old acquaintance on Facebook given how open ended it is, but it's still a find.

If you think about it, in America, we're taught that we are our heritage first, Americans second. At least that's what public schools taught me in mass. *rolls eyes* I consider myself an American and not my mixed heritage.

The point of the flag setting was not for people to choose something that corresponds to their cultural identity, but rather to represent the person's actual national affiliation to other users who may be local to them. As an example, my flag setting represented both my national residency, frequent physical location, and the fact I set up the JP side of the site, in contrast with Scragg's US one.

Using the flag setting as a cultural identity marker was not its intended function. And allowing historical flags to blur the lines would only spawn a whole new round of outrage: what would American, Korean, Chinese, or even Vietnamese users say if some someone decided to switch from this flag back to the many-rayed rising sun?

The only gray areas we're willing to negotiate on are countries who's international recognition is in dispute, such as Taiwan, which China still rejects.

Is it possible to expand the profiles further in the future? I know I'm not the only one that used the flag setting as a cultural identity. Would it be possible to have both Location and Cultural Identity/Nationality?

This exactly, because if this was so, then the site would have to have flags for secular unions in countries. I.E. (Rebel Flag and Union Flag) It just doesn't work like that, I know many rednecks (I live in Texas don't forget this)
That would be offended if they weren't allowed to put the Confederate flag as their flag of origin, It just doesn't work like that.

So, Sweden has this part (province, whatever) down south called "Skåne" which is technically part of Sweden but they talk like Danish, they eat Danish food and they are just not fun to deal with. They also have their own flag.

I think I speak for the rest of Sweden when I say that I'd like to be disassociated from them. Can we please have this flag added and be forced upon the inhabitants of Skåne so that they don't appear to be normal Swedish people? Thank you.

I second this!

Half-off-topic: can we has hover-text for flags? So many teensy-weensy flags I have never seen even in full size. Would be nice to know what they are.

ie. If it weren't for this thread I never would have known that that was the Viet flag. :P

Do you know what unconditional surrender means? It means that there are no guarantees given to the surrending party.

The only outcries I seem to be hearing about these issues are the immigrants living in other countries.

If you want to be so "patriotic" do so on your own soil instead of behind your safe computer and western comforts.

Wow... this thread really seems to be bringing out some xenophobic hostility in some people. I wasn't aware of when the internet became the sole domain of any one country which would be the only conceivable grounds for such nationalistic hostility, even as widely aimed as this.

It's not hostility, It's just honesty... In my honest opinion, If you're immigrating to another country (I can understand if it was forced) you should feel pride in your new home, not feel nostalgic and say something like this. A good example, let see (I know it's not exactly a perfect example but it works.) Server merge topic: A forced merger (lets go with Remora -> Leviathan) A lot of Remorans felt pride with their server, a lot felt pride in their new server. A voluntary merger, Someone who purposely left and went to another server, do they feel pride in their server? Not exactly or else they wouldn't have wanted to leave... Am I right?

2 flags representing a single country doesn't work. That said, this flag is being recognized by many American states and institutions.

However there are many more examples of flags and matters of nationalities that are still disputed to this day.

I just can't understand how OP has the sheer arrogance to advocate it on this site when that SAME flag he might be rooting for might be OFFENDING as many other people around the world.

Says the guy with a Bermuda flag connecting from a Netherlands IP.

Can't we just let it slide? If it's too big of an issue for people we could just have the flags auto-populate themselves from ARIN WhoIs lookups.

I just have to say, it aggravates me when people are overly proud of their heritage, to the extent they feel the need to separate themselves from things that are foreign to them.

Immigrants who come to America who seclude themselves into communities of their own people, paste flags of their home country all over their things, call Americans ignorant and say how much this country sucks and is going down the can, even though they left their own country for a reason.

I'm mixed race myself and I don't like siding with being one race or another. Being American doesn't mean you're white, it just means you live here, nothing else.

Flags don't carry much meaning for me on a site. I'm representing myself, not my country/nation.

I wish I was from Bermuda. I'd test out the famous Bermuda triangle myself. :S
