Vietnamese Flag - Please Update

As a Vietnamese American, I would like to request for the Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag (Yellow w/3 Red stripes). The current flag is extremely offense to Vietnamese Americans.

I know this is an MMO where people try to escape reality, including realities of politics, but please consider updating the flag choices.

I believe you belong to a vast minority. If anything, I believe you are a troll.

There is, however, a vast majority of Vietnamese Americans that do believe in the Heritage and Freedom flag.

Here's a few things to note from the wikipedia entry, since it covers the basics:



In the United States, virtually no Vietnamese Americans use the current flag of Vietnam, which many of them consider offensive. Instead, they use the flag of South Vietnam as their symbol.

* When a Vietnamese American video tape store owner displayed the current flag of Vietnam and a photo of Ho Chi Minh in front of his store in Westminster, California in 1999, a month-long protest against it climaxed when 15,000 people held a candlelight vigil one night, sparking the Hitek Incident (Hitek was the name of the store).

* A faux pas by the United States Postal Service in using the current Vietnamese flag in a brochure to represent the Vietnamese American community that it serves caused some outrage among Vietnamese Americans and resulted in an apology.

* In 2004, some Vietnamese American students at the California State University, Fullerton threatened to walk out on their graduation ceremony when the university chose to use the current flag of Vietnam to represent its Vietnamese students. The Vietnamese American students demanded that the university use the former flag of South Vietnam instead. This resulted in the university scrapping all foreign flags for the ceremony.

* In 2006, Vietnamese-American students at the University of Texas at Arlington protested the use of the Vietnamese flag in the Hall of Flags in Nedderman Hall and the exclusion of the South Vietnamese flag at a cultural diversity show during International Week. After weeks of protests, the university decided to scrap all flags from the display.

* Prior to President George W. Bush's visit to Vietnam in 2006, the White House website briefly displayed the flag of the Republic of Vietnam before replacing it with the current flag of Vietnam.

* During World Youth Day 2008, tensions flared between the 800 Vietnamese pilgrims who used the flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the 2300 Vietnamese Australians pilgrims who used the Republic of Vietnam flag.

* In 2008, many protested against Nguoi Viet Daily News, a Vietnamese-language newspaper in Orange County, California, for publishing a photograph of an art installation depicting a foot spa bearing the colors of the flag.

* The lobbying efforts of Vietnamese Americans resulted in the state governments of Louisiana, California and Ohio to adopt it to symbolize Vietnamese Americans.

At the risk of sounding really culturally insensitive, on one hand, it kind of seems like Vietnamese Americans are wrong - the south lost the war, and they no longer exist. In much the same way, I'm sure some Americans from the south would like their old Confederate flag instead of the current U.S. flag. Except that they lost too - the country that it represents no longer exists in any form.

Anyway, I think it would be nice to have whatever flag you want displayed (I wouldn't mind having my state's flag). I'm too young (only 30) to really have an appreciation for the Vietnam war, so you'll have to forgive me on this one.

Common answer is, a communist flag, but it goes deeper than that.

The flag symbolizes over 3 1/2 million lives lost due to the Communist Party of Vietnam quest for power and control. It represents a flag of death to those that were part of the war and manipulated. In a part of Hanoi's national anthem (CPV), "We swear to tear our enemies apart and drink their blood!"

Vietnamese Americans that have fled from the country find the Red and Yellow Star Flag offensive and culturally insensitive. It's just as offensive as parading around with a Nazi flag in the Tri-State Region of New York.

And here I thought the flag was just to show what country you're currently living in, and not the country you're from.

But I could be wrong.

Just to play devil's advocate here, the original flag of the 13 colonies symbolizes the start of the Revolutionary War in the US. If they gave us that flag for an option, would I be offended? Of course not. It's a part of history, whether it's good or bad.

You are making way too big a deal about this. It is just something to show where you are. Guess what as an american-vietanmese person I'm about 85% confident you are in america.

At which point I think I should be offended that you would use another countries flag when you live in this one. Think of all the blood and lives sacrificed to ensure your freedom.

Some use it to connect players beyond just geographic locations.

So, Sweden has this part (province, whatever) down south called "Skåne" which is technically part of Sweden but they talk like Danish, they eat Danish food and they are just not fun to deal with. They also have their own flag.



I think I speak for the rest of Sweden when I say that I'd like to be disassociated from them. Can we please have this flag added and be forced upon the inhabitants of Skåne so that they don't appear to be normal Swedish people? Thank you.

I think Yeva has a valid point, and enough justification for the additional flag to be considered to be added to the list, rather than simply replacing the current Vietnamese flag. It is, after all, still the official Vietnamese flag.

Ok, here's a thought, if you don't like the flag, and find it extremely offensive....why the hell do you have it as your nationality flag here? You must really hate the american flag if you'd rather be represented by one that you despise. Just my opinion.

the poor admins would be spending the next few months adding flags to appease everyone who might possibly be offended. In America, there would be so many... just the American Indian flags alone would be quite a list, (I thought of that being Navajo myself,) the confederate flag...a flag for every state? I'm happy with the American Flag, because although we have our heritage, we are Americans first.
