My personal 'problem' with apple is 2 fold:

1. They make products that are no better (and often worse) than the competitors but some how claim to be the new/best/only product with these stats.

2. They invent market sectors and then tell us all that we need X product despite the simple fact we don't (then due to 1, everyone buys it).

Yes I genuinely wish I could do the same, as I could make a stupid amount of money from some one else's (or just a bad/old) idea.

As a marketing project Apple absolutely rocks, as a technology company they are average.

To me, Apple always seemed to be a company that catered to their target consumers really well while trying to rope in more of the general gadget-fan PC crowd more and more with each new awesome thing they drop. I've never really cared to invest in a Mac computer just because the whole attraction for me is solely that the computers are *** beautiful, but I've been really close to buying an ipod or iphone before.

They know they would rather define the scope and intent of their products as their visions and the consumers that like Apple like that aspect (at least it seems) so I can respect that. I kind of like the concept, I'm just not big on the iPad itself because I get way too *** overwhelmed with the sheer mass of internet content as it is.

I think that any device like this needs to justify its existence. The developers need to look at what's out there and put out a product that's filling some need that's not being met. This doesn't really do that; it simply combines a few devices into one and slaps a massive price tag on it. I can't understand why anyone would bother to buy one if they have some combination of the following devices:

iPod/mp3 player
smart phone
digital camera
GPS
desktop
laptop
eReader
tablet

Personally, I own all of those except the tablet. I was really hoping it was going to combine those things in a way that would make it convenient for me to carry this one thing instead of all those things, but it didn't. It didn't replace a single one of the devices I own, in fact. Depending on the quality of the tablet function and the needs of the user, it may be a less expensive option for this function, but then again maybe not.

- I still have to carry my iPod because the iPad is huge and unwieldy by comparison. I can't strap that to my arm and go running. I don't really want to carry something that large for the iPod-like functions alone.

- It's too large to be mounted to my dashboard like a GPS, even if it has GPS functions. It's not even convenient for me to place it anywhere at all in my car, because the console of my car is a sea of buttons that perform other functions already.

- It's obviously not going to replace a desktop, and there are many things I do with my laptop that the iPad isn't capable of doing. If I were traveling, I would still need to take my laptop with me because I can't live without my computer, so why double up?

- I have a kindle. It would not be nearly as comfortable to read without matte screen, nor would I want to read through a bunch of smudges from where I've been touching it. I will give it credit for being attractive, but what about glare and eye strain?

- It doesn't make calls.

- As far as I've heard/read, it doesn't actually come with the ability to take pictures or video.

- And isn't there some kind of fee for the internet connectivity? My kindle can perform basic functions on the internet, at no charge. I'm already paying for internet capability on my phone and at home. Do I really want to pay even more to use this device?

- No USB ports or SD card reader. Wow that's neat; how much extra can I pay for those really basic capabilities?

It doesn't matter if it's the most amazing media-consumption device to ever exist on the earth. It can have the most visually stunning display ever, and be as beautiful a device as it wants to be. That doesn't change the fact that it is extremely limited in both capability and utility at this point.

I don't like the iPad itself, but I am excited about further development of the technology. I'm usually pretty impressed with Apple releases even though I don't own many Apple products, and this really falls short of the mark. I really think that this feels rushed. It's like they started to have a good idea and just didn't get the time to fully think it through, test it in the real world, and then tweak it accordingly. I'll wait for them to release a version that at least gives the user ability to multitask on it. I think future generations might be worth buying, depending on what improvements they can make on it, but this one is just not.

I just read this article from Gina Trapani and it makes a lot of sense as well as sums up my general attitude towards Apple and 1st-generation Apple products.

My favorite parts being these:

Quote:
First-generation Apple products are for suckers. Only lemmings with no self-control and excessive disposable income buy first generation Apple products, especially in a new gadget category. When they do, they pay the double the price for immature hardware and software.
Quote:
You don't know if you need an iPad yet. If you've already got a smartphone and a laptop, the gap in your workflow that the iPad might fill isn't obvious, and discerning consumers only absorb gadgets that fulfill a need. Plenty of geeks across the Internet have described how the iPad is an expensive, closed platform with too many missing features. I'm opting for simple common sense: new gadget acquisitions come with hidden costs. Only buy devices whose benefits you know outweigh those costs.
The former seems a little harsh, but ***, it's true. Apple in general gives me horrible pangs of buyer's remorse, but it's because they always improve their products every time I give consideration to dropping the money for one.

The latter appeals to me a lot because I even get that seem attitude towards new websites just because it isn't always obvious whether adding a new thing into my daily rotation is going to be worth it or not. Like Ivve, I'm at the point where I'm trying to consolidate, not add more to the family lol.

As for the point about internet connectivity, there's 2 models, one that works with wi-fi hotspots only and another that works with wi-fi as well as AT&T cellular service, but the latter isn't available for another month.

Here's another review I found through Gina Trapani that has for geeks/everyone else split review that echoes a lot of what Ivve pointed out.

iPad would look interesting just because I wouldn't mind how to learn the programming language it uses for apps, but I'd rather wait for HP's version of it to come out since it addresses some of the shortcomings the iPad has.

The Apple vs. PC battle is really a battle of freedom vs fluidity.
...
Because PCs don't have a standard equipment set, it allows for more erroring to occur or slowdown depending on said equipment.. dare I say, the interface to not run as smoothly with applications. That being said, PCs allow freedom. Freedom to alter your equipment, your applications, your content...

So apple is like Apple is[p] Socialism
they tell you what you can and can not do
and
PC is Democracy
you get to try and see what works

~~~~~TANGENT~~~~
!!!YES IT BLENDS!!!
Everything will always improve. There will always be a better version, or maybe even a completely new product that does 10x better. That really doesn't stop me much because then I'd be waiting on a pile of money with nothing to do with forever, which is practically where I stood. So yes, I have disposable income. If that makes me a lemming because I'd rather buy an electronic toy than go shoe shopping, then so be it. You also probably only take note of this in Apple's products because they are often in the spotlight.
But why buy a cellphone if there will inevitably be a better one in a year? Even FFXI outdates equipment eventually; even relics and mythic can now be further improved, and just when you thought you were done. Every time there's an update, there will be people whining about how their ___ is now worthless. I'm sure there are plenty of people upset about Hagun and Elemental torque and of course there are also the people saying "I'm glad I waited!"
But businesses have to do that, otherwise there would be no progression. And then they would lose customer interest to their competitors. They have to keep going forward, even if some of us lemmings are upset about it.
Almost anything you invest your money into will "lose" money/value in the long run unless you like to play in the stock market or real estate business. And even that is still risky. I'm not ignorant, my purchase will be relatively worthless some day, but I'm not going to worry about when that will be because then I'd never spend a dime on anything. I'd rather emo about how almost everything I own in FFXI seems to always go down in price and everything I don't have feels like it goes up.
I didn't meant to imply that the argument is exclusive to Apple, just that I think they're one of the shining examples of buyer's remorse, but you're right that in that it's more noticeable in Apple because they have things that I actually want, yet can't really afford. I'm usually in the spot of waiting until a product gets vetted thoroughly and by that time hesitating for fear that the next iteration will pop up in a few months.
It's technically a great thing because they're always improving and that's always good for the consumer, I just hate the place I get stuck in because of it lol.
