I don't get people buying the Ipad, I mean no one ever gets bare bones, and it easily costs 2x as much as a netbook, and the netbook is capable of so much more. Hell with the price of a decently equipped Ipad, you can even get a fairly decent laptop.
I wouldnt buy an ipad because you should never buy first generation i-anything.
and its still not flash capable. I do like the idea though. It does look easier to carry around than a netbook..and I said in my lj how big a fan I am of virtual textbooks..if I could have all my textbooks on something like an ipad then Id get one. But for now Ill just keep my itouch, I love it so much. I love the thing. Most of my coworkers already have 'em. I'm holding out for the 3G-capable one though.
Really, it's the ultimate content-consumption device. It doesn't replace a laptop or a desktop, but if you just want to sit somewhere and suck down content in one of the slickest, sexiest ways imaginable, the iPad's the way to go. If you want the most features and freedom for the money, it certainly isn't. It also isn't if you're the type of person who's uncomfortable feeling like a consumer ***. That's why I don't own a Mac desktop or laptop, and probably never will. But on the mobile end of things, where I'm only a consumer, I'm on my fifth iPhone at this point. For what it's designed to do, it does it damn well.

You could buy yourself a $140,000 sports car. Out of the box, it does 0-60 in X seconds, has X horsepower, does what it's designed to do and kicks ***, etc. But it's a hundred and fourty thousand goddamn dollars and you don't really want to open it up and touch it after it comes off the factory floor. OR, you could basically buy a cheaper car, and just customize the hell out of it. Put in a better engine, a big goofy spoiler, a supercharger, better exhaust system, etc. In the end, you probably have a car that can match or even beat the $140,000 brand name sports car in performance alone. Person one says "Why would you want to do that? It's a lot of work, and it's still not a (insert pretentious brand name here.)" Person two says "Yeah, but it cost me half as much, matches or outperforms your car, and I was in control the whole time." It's two entirely different personality types you're dealing with there, and trying to figure out who's "right" based on specs alone completely misses the point.

IF you understand that and are still ok with dropping that amount of cash on it.. then go for it. it has its uses i guess but i wouldnt get one to replace anything you currently use I don't understand the irrational Apple hatred. Blackberry comes out with an "upgraded" model every year (or every half year) that's also a gajillion bucks and nobody gives them hell for it. ($700 retail for a Blackberry Bold right now.) I would never own an Apple desktop either, but I don't fault people who do. In fact, almost half the professional game developers I know use a Mac these days.
You're dealing with different personality types here. - On one hand you got the guy dropping $120k on a BMW Roadster because he loves BMW and wants a complete brand package at a certain quality level, end of story. - On the other hand you got the guy who customized and upgraded his Honda for 1/3rd the price and can easily destroy the $120k BMW in a race. So the second guy calls the first guy a "sheep" or "trendy" or a brand-name consumer ***. Or calls him a "car n00b" for not doing it himself. Or "stupid" for spending more for less. Or "gimp" because his car has a lower top speed. "You'd buy anything BMW makes, and they come out with a new model every year anyway!" Even if the second guy is technically right, you see how HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE that sounds? It's pretty much the same argument. Even if you're Guy #2, refusing to let Guy #1 enjoy his BMW and ceaselessly insisting how "right" you are doesn't make you "win" -- it just makes you look like a total asshat.

I don't actually hate Apple, granted, I'll give you a funny look for even trying to suggest anything Apple to me, I'm not one to be like 'n00b' or 'sheeple' for getting Apple.
I guess labeling it as a status statement is the only way I could really conceive why anyone would WANT an Ipad, when as you've pointed out a few times now, that you can get more bang for your buck by dropping the Apple brand name from your investment. As for new models of whatever coming out the next year, that's with pretty much anything electronic related minus consoles now.. You'd go broke trying to keep the latest in video card technology for PC's.. I don't think they even wait 6 months before the new bigger and better model comes out... So I find something that's adequate, and will be so for a couple of years at least, and get that. those people who buy the iPad are probably the same bunch of saps who believe in faeries and leprechuans.
There's nothing special about the iPad except the fact that its a bigger version of the iPhone, without the phone. Sure, you can dish out the same amount of money and get yourself one of those giant calculators (netbooks), or shell out a bit more for a cooler laptop capable of a lot more than an iPad, but hell, everyone else is getting one, so why should you wait? Steve Jobs should come out with the iLeash, cz apparently he has lots of sheep to herd. YES IT BLENDS

Well I don't own a blackberry, and I've bought 2 apple products ever.. I have my original video ipod and my 3rd gen Ipod Touch... So I suppose I would still be a hypacrite if I started bashing Apple. But I've never bought a single song off of Itunes, and I have about 2.8k songs. I've also never bought a single accessory from Apple, not even a new set of earphones. So while I love my Ipod Touch and I will say it is one of the better mp3 players out there. I will not support Apple or Blackberry by buying their overpriced equipment that is only compatible with their specific devices. But will it blend?
