Please find me a person who DIDN'T love TMNT~ D:< xD
ive never been a fan of it
I never really was either. D:
You blasphemous kids! *sob*
Kidding, kidding. ^^ I was never allowed to watch the cartoons of it when I was little, but I just adored the first movie. Now that I'm on my own I can finally watch the cartoons! :D
My husband showed me shows called um.. Bug Bunny I think it was called. I wasn't allowed to watch that either, but it was so cute when he showed me some episodes. *carrot chomp* What's up, Doc? *chomp chomp* <3!
You weren't allowed to watch Merry Melodies (now referred to as Looney Toons) as a kid? O.o My dear, you have been deprived.
My parents were super-conservative and nervous about stuff on TV. We didn't watch anything except the Lakers and the Pistons, because Daddy loved the Pistons and hated the Lakers, I think. But I can watch all the cartoons I want now! :D So it's all good!
I haven't seen the Tyra Banks thing or CSI episode but have heard of them. I guess we can't escape the fact that for any community, only the weirdos will get represented because they stand out. The non-weirdos just blend in.
It's not unexpected for people to think of us as weirdos, which is true for certain parts of the community actually. I don't see a reason to be defensive though because I don't see anything wrong with weirdness hehe, cultural uniformity is boring.
Like people already posted, there are many different levels, ideas, and perceptions on furries. Tons of debates even within the community.
There are the casuals who just like anthropomorphic characters due to nostalgia from children's shows (yogi bear), cultural commentary on human and animal differentiation (animal farm), or just think werewolves are badass (underworld), etc. In fact, most of these guys probably aren't even furries, unfortunately people label others at the slightest hint hehe.
Then there are the therians, the guys who feel like they are an animal trapped in a human body or embody the spirit of an animal or is a reincarnation of an animal. They get ridiculed often even by other furries... but I honestly love them. I knew a guy who was by all accounts could've been a regular college frat guy (buff, straight, hard-working, friendly, a leader), except he had these quirky habits of acting like a dog haha. He wasn't even trying to act that way, it just came to him naturally. These guys are very interesting to interact with, it's so weird and fun, it's just a blast.
I was kind of disappointed to read earlier, that even the furries on here, in their haste to defend themselves, immediately put down some of the weirder members of the community by posting that one guy's post about how he acts like a dog.
Moving on, then there are the artists. These guys just like to draw and some or most of the time it's animals or anthropomorphic characters. Either for cartoon, comic interests or humans are just boring to draw. A lot of furriness is about art, since it's one of the main ways to express a fantastical idea.
Ahhh, the fursuiters! The most visible part of our group! I think the idea is to take it beyond the simple drawn art and have something more tangible, 3D and expressive. In truth most fursuiters are normal people who don't deserve half the ***they get. Does anyone like to dress up for Halloween, or (for the gays) dress in drag? There is really not much difference (except for the anthropomorphic focus).
And finally, there are the furries who are furries because of sex and attraction (I guess it could be called a fetish). We can blame the hot guys in SWAT KATS or Road Rovers during our childhood or whatever, but the end result is that somehow our brains got wired differently and, like being gay, we're attracted to those buff werewolves or werecats or centaurs, etc. There is really no denying it, the core of the furry idea is the sexual attraction towards anthropomorphic characters. (hence all the yiffing stuff, and furry artwork etc., a lot of them being NSFW hehehe).
At the far extreme is probably actual bestiality, of which only a small minority are a part of. Most furries are not into bestiality and consider them not a part of the community. I agree and disagree to some extent, but that's another topic for another day.
Those are my general knowledge and overview, questions are welcome! And if I made mistakes please correct me too.
TL:DR
overview of furry community and some of my thoughts
Fur and Loathing in Las Vegas is the episode. I <3 you lol, you've got a great overview of the community. I don't know where I fit, I love to wear tails/ears/paws and wear them often just for every day wear, but I also wear them as part of my cosplay outfit for Anime cons [Otakon or Nekocon] when I'm too lazy to make a proper costume.
I try not to shun the "weirder" furries, though I do have issues with the weird hybrids lol, not in a bad way, more they confuse me and I'm like "how the hell is THAT a furry!?"
I say it's a mixture of sexuality and identity, with a focus on the latter. I personally see it more as an identity thing, but I can see aspects of both.
I think Destrac got it right on the head.
Also for those of you who were deprived of the good cartoons as a kid, I pity you. I PITY YOU. D:
Edit: Also I try not to "shun" the weirder furries, I just hate the image that they push onto us because of how others perceive it. The people themselves aren't usually that bad. A little weird and it makes me a tad uncomfortable at times, but for the most part it's not really that big of a deal.

Again, substitute the furry aspect with LGBT aspects and, that is me.
Identity, those into it for the sexual stuff aren't furries, they're just fetishists. Me and my mate [can safely call him that lol] don't wear tails or anything to bed, nothing about our fursona's are even brought into the bedroom. Its definitely more of an identity.
Hehe, there is the in-community disagreement coming in. Perhaps you're right, that I'm only looking at it from my own perspective. Or perhaps there is an even divide. I definitely believe those into the sexual side are still furries though, even if it's part of a fetish.
For myself, I'm actually a combination of both identity and sexuality, (and happen to be one of those weird hybrids haha). I'll explain in a later post :P

Pretty awesome Shayka!
Thanks =3 and its not a bad episode, though they put a big emphasis on "furpiles" or yiffing whichever words you want to use. Big pile of hump-happy plushy-people XD And random guys in fursuits pretending to be women, sounds like FFXI!
I would think it is more of an identity thing.
For example, Destrac is a furry but I don't think Oumura is. . .
As with Hanbok and his partner.
It shouldn't have something to do with sexuality (I think. . .). @_@
Oum sometimes has furry tendencies (there is some overlap between the bear community and furry community :P lots of hair!), but yeah, he doesn't consider himself a furry hehe.

Which weird hybrid? Don't say zombie/wolf! XD I think the ones just in it for the sexual aspect aren't too furryish to me, its just bedroom roleplay to them, those that are into the life-style and are in it with the sexual aspect in mind too, are more furryish to me. I'd consider the fetishists to be weekend warriors in a sense lol, like they're ashamed to be associated with it outside of the bedroom.
Omg, furries and their "yiffing." ><;
I learned that term from a fur friend! D:
Yiff yiff yiff! Lmao

Tell him the fact hes hairy means hes a furry! :D Plus bears work great with the furry community. And should he see this ever EMBRACE THE FURRYNESS! :D

<3 What about Captain Planet?! xD
I still think that one kid got jipped. Everyone gets these awesome elemental powers than the other kid gets heart :(
If only the ring worked on having your hottest crush love you back? Haha, but I think it only worked on animals and nature... I guess it would work if Mati was into bestiality >.>

TMNT was awesome... and I don't think you were allowed to misuse you powers like that... and would you really want them knowing they only loved you because of a magic ring?

I approve :P

You have an excellent point. I've met the guys who only treat it as a bedroom fetish and they're definitely missing something that those with the furry identity have, that deep feeling of passion or something like that lol.
I happen to be a tiger-wolf hybrid haha (I know I know, so cliche). But how did it come about? Well, I was born in the year of the fire tiger (in chinese zodiac) and I've always been fiercely proud of this fact (despite me not caring for horoscopes). I'm also a Leo haha.
The wolf, is because before I ever discovered the furry idea, not many shows or art depict weretigers. But werewolves are very common, and the first one I saw I knew something was up with me that I didn't know. (and the whole lone wolf thing too blah blah) In any case, I was stuck with these two animals I feel really strongly with, and honestly couldn't decide so I just went with both hah.
It's sooooooooo cute!!!
Do you have a suit or accessories.
Can I see? XD
Apparently a can of worms was opened while I was away... but I'll answer this before reading everything.
I don't have a suit (yet) I'm a job-less college student and if I were to make one myself it'd take a lot of research and preparation... and money.
I have accessories but they're only generic fox stuff that I bought at an anime convention. Ears/tail/leg fluffs and hand fluffs. I'll take a picture at some point in the future if you're curious. It's all scattered across my room/car/possibly parents house so I'd have to get it all together @____@;
With all those other threads going around, I thought I'd try this one. For those not into this fandom please don't make assumptions on all of us based on the actions of a few. You can't name one group in the world who haven't been given a bad name by a minority of people in said group.
