The thing that really removes the wind from my sails is alabaster/murky matter not being guaranteed in chests. Going 3 chests in a row not hitting the bonus chest and rolling a miss on matter several times is very demoralizing. Luck dictating the pace with the speed of how you advance this gear is just needlessly cruel.

And it's double cruel because you're chained to your worst luck. It hurts my heart to look in my inventory and see 24 Alabaster Matter and 48 Murky Matter. How the heck do you end up with a 24-point disparity when you need both matters to level up???

My server has weeks where alabaster ??? doesn't appear or is never reported, it's gotten a little better since they swapped to the gold indicator but it still happens.

Yeah... that's been killing my motivation to do it, especially when I need 4 pieces r30 and the earring.
Some weeks I do get lucky and get 2 matter in a row and it feels amazing, until I look at a friend who's been doing it the same amount of time as me and he's got r10-15 on multiple pieces because he somehow gets 3-4 ranks a week.. lol
The worst part is, on Sylph I can't even make gil off this anymore selling the parts/cores. Not a single one has made a sale since 5/24. I thought maybe no one's buying it in general, but they seem to sell decently often on other servers still.
Basically paying SE for torture lol Go in, no matter, 1 shard, no gil and now two hours are gone.

Same. It's a bit depressing when I look at that site for the ???s and the server I'm on is the only one who hasn't reported any of them... on a Saturday night

I felt like that for a long time, after you reach R24+ or something things change, because you need so many points for each upgrade that you'll start accumulating Matters.
For instance atm I'm 28/30 on alabaster Earring, it takes me over 45k units to upgrade and I have 9 Alabaster Matters in my mog house.
Murky Ring is in a similar situation but just R25 and 2 matters in Mog house.
Do you think this is any less frustrating? Well yes I guess it is less frustrating indeed. It's just... slow, painfully slow.
If I ever start a new item after these (will I? Doubt it lol) I would be able to get the first levels of my new item pretty fast though.

They are reducing the number of floors in Temenos to be more inline with apollyon next patch, if you didn't see the live stream thing.

Why spend 300 mil on a full set of Duty armor today knowing that youll only be able to R30 one piece every 8-12 weeks?

my suggestion would be to quit and play ff14 or WoW if you want to replace every piece of gear every 5-6 months with new bis.
for a starting or new player, this gear/event is likely the best path forward for them unless they are buying a v0 clear off mercs.
if the event is not worth it for a nearly bis player already, simply do not do the event or only do it when bored or something

Buying a v0 off a merc or..... asking their LS for help with a clear.

I'm envisioning somewhere in November-January they implement a way to speed up this grind. Just based on historical timelines.
Unfortunately, they still haven't even added "bonus" ways to get Gallimaufry for Sortie (my suggestion would be that you can trade in Psyches for Gallimaufry as this is a tradeoff of points now vs the eventual time gate). Not even a monthly campaign. Other than the upcoming removal of some floors I don't expect to see adjustments to Limbus progression for a long, long time at this point.

If people are expecting a moogle amplifier-style addition to Limbus to make obtaining matters easier..
Clearly you've not been paying attention to the fact that people - JP people even - have been complaining very loudly about Limbus being so grindy from day 1 of release when all you had were two pieces of accessories that were ok-ish at R0.
What did SE do in response to these complaints? Doubled down on the Limbus grind, adding NMs you need to grind to make rewards suck slightly less.
People still complained about the Limbus grind. What did SE do in response? Tripled down by adding entirely new sets of armor to grind that is not that good at R0 and only gets good at R15+ being generous.
Still complaints.
SE's response? Quadrupling down on Limbus grind by adding new weapons and grips all using the same currency and augmentation methods.
Yeah.. definitely going to make the grind suck less. Any day now.
I think I've seen a Temenos ??? once, ever. The fact these things even exist should tell you how much the content sucks, and that SE knows the content sucks.
It sucks so bad they added an option to skip doing the content entirely for the filthy casuals that are happy with not doing it in exchange for a free chest once a week.

Designed this way because Limbus technically is easy, open content for everyone, so the reward hunt has to be longer. Theres a difference between "longer" and what we were given. Even if they made it one matter + 2 shards, it would still be ~1 month per piece. I'm sure most people here would be like "ok well thats long but whatever", it wouldnt be that much different from other stuff:
Relic takes two weeks just to unlock body on a job. Then you have to get the shards/voids, which would probably take a month if you were rotating around.
AF is a bit harder to quantify, but at 3 cards per run (no campaign), it would take 12 days (avg 1 run per day) to +3 feet armor (quickest) and 20 days to +3 a body (slowest)

This was so wild to me, gave 20% of the content away as a freebie and the weapons are so bad they overshadow it.

I kind of see Sortie and Limbus as two distinct categories of content. Sortie is true endgame content with an Ultimate Weapon as a prize (Empyrean+2/3 is a quicker reward, but even newer players can upgrade gear pieces almost daily, and even solo, so that doesn't feel like it needs to be adjusted much). Limbus is casual/open content for all. The rewards for each are tailored for specific groups of players accordingly.
For Sortie, SE might feel there is no reason to lower the requirements or make Prime weapons easier to obtain, because the hardcore players will do everything to obtain one. They are the highest power weapons in the game, so if you can even qualify for one, you will do whatever it takes for it. I recall SE did not lower requirements for any other REMA weapons for a long time (and still never lowered requirements for Aeonics, besides I guess the evasion nerf of HELMs?). When they finally do, it's years later. Prime-5 hasn't been out long enough for that to be done yet IMO.
For Limbus, the reward is guaranteed with simply time investment. Skill level is ignored, gil resources is ignored, and you can obtain the best pieces of gear available just by doing the content. The only cost to you is Time (and sanity). If you are a newer player or someone who can't clear Odyssey higher Veng bosses, this content is perfect for you because you can make gradual progress at sets without having to climb the skill issue ladder. But if you're a veteran player, you will value Limbus sets less, because you likely already have the highest ranked stuff from Gaol and primes already. These sets don't move the needle so significantly that most veteran players will agree to such a long grind. In such a case, I think they may ease acquisition of this gear soon (like they did with Dynamis), otherwise you get content that's basically ignored by many people. These things have to be balanced to keep players involved, or the content ends up like a grand failure.
Just my thoughts.

This isnt even accurate.
You'll get more matters than you get sufficient shards. Even if you race swap so you can get the shard you'll make use of, at ~2 HQ boxes a week and 50% chance on matter on NQ box, after two weeks you'll have 28 shards and 7 of each matter, you're two shards short to make 7 jewels.
The way the event is built, you are required to use the auction house to supplant shards, which means that it is required that people do the climbs just to generate shards for the sake of selling them.
The whole thing is poorly thought out from top to bottom. The only redeeming qualities is that it is the only event that actually offers decent EP for your efforts, and the event is not instanced so you can work at your leisure or go afk for whatever reason and not be penalized for it.

It's accurate because the counter argument is (SE, not me): You never have to buy shards. You can farm them for free weekly, and trade them with others. You have the option to buy shards if you want, but not a requirement, unless you want to finish faster. (To be sure, it's a terrible argument because it encourages the slog, but SE doesn't care)
Which is why I said time is your currency. You can pay gil to slightly reduce that time (which is what everyone is doing). But Even a complete brokee can only use their time and still make progress, without ever spending a penny. You're just going to hate yourself for it.
Also, there's an infinite money glitch you can take advantage of, depending on your race and how popular certain shards are. The event in some cases can net you money depending on your server.

Largely agree with the limbus weapon complaints, but here are a few that stand out to me:
Grip - best of the series by far. Soundly beats utu as long as you can make use of the PDL (even being attack capped enough to make use of ~1/2 of the PDL beats utu). And it's all jobs! Staff ranger is back (Prester + grip for coronach ranger.. nostalgia).
Saber - very solid upgrade for cor wildfire/leaden and blu nukes. Dual wield +2/+1 a nice option.
Axe/fists - nice for pet lv+. Shame they made it main hand only on axe, dedicated prime BST deserved to stack the lv+ in offhand imo.
Staff - high mdmg when augmented for helix spells.
Some of the 1h pdl+10% weapons are circumstantially bis offhands as well. I like that most of the good ones don't necessarily need augmenting to shine either.. this augment system is terrible.

I feel like this was an oversight with Prime Axe, in that the Pet Level isn't supposed to work in the offhand (because why would you ever offhand a prime). Not sure if it was ever reported as a bug though, so it's in the game. Can't imagine they intended you to gain 7 pet levels. Not that it matters for much? BST pets are trash, and at pet attack cap, you probably would want the extra Pet PDL from Prime Axe instead of 5% Damage + Pet Level+2? No math expert. Good for Magic Accuracy though.

So in regards to the Temenos ITG mob for the ???. I noticed yesterday that I was killing it and it checked ITG, but as it died you can still target/check. I did this and it showed as Easy pray. I thought i checked the wrong mob, but happened again today. Wondering if its a bug where the mob changes from ITG at death. Or maybe just intended consequence of how the system works.

I didnt do 10 clears on one day to hyper consume the slop.
But anyways
Neither did I? Or at least not that I remember.
Anyway, I didn't say it wasn't a total slog to augment. But the countless pages of the same handful of people saying the same thing over and over was what my comment about crying was in reference to. We get it, we all understand how you feel.
To your odyssey point, you're missing that you need 5 other well geared and dedicated people, with the same consistent schedule, for that to be remotely possible. Not that it makes the comparison any more favorable for augmenting limbus gear, but limbus being more solo friendly is a positive that shouldn't be completely ignored.

Welp I went and bought two clemency pieces for whatever reason.
In about two years they might be R30 and I can start on something else.

I tribox it, if you consider that solo. I'll take some friends on climbs if the timing works. And?
I didn't see a thread dedicated to new-new Limbus so here's one with some findings. I’ve continued to edit this post with new discoveries made throughout the thread.
For entrance and zone info, really the SE post is best:
https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/62862-June-10-2025-%28JST%29-Version-Update?p=667175&viewfull=1#post667175
Obtaining the Key Items / Units
Kill mobs to fill the bar in the upper left. Seems to take 6-15+ mobs per floor, this increases based on the chosen mob level and number of people in your party. You continue to get units as long as you want to sit there and keep killing and refill the bar, but at half the rate. Whether this is comparable to the units gained by continuing to move floors and finishing the event to get the chest bonus is up a function of your personal kill speed and group size.
Each Temporary KI looks like "Apollyon SE #1 data", and you get 1 per floor. You keep them until you open a chest and then they are all lost. You get a KI for filling up the bar at the top of the screen on each floor. I didn't count but I think it requires like 10 mobs per floor (this apparently varies by level choice). Once you get a KI, you should get to keep it even if you leave Limbus. You would lose any progress on any un-completed floors, but this is like 6-10 kills so no biggie.
You can enter any section / floor at any time. You don't need to go in any type of order or "climb" if you're missing one of the upper KIs from a run that got interrupted.
Once you choose a level (119-130), I think you need to keep that level choice until you open a chest. If you adjust it after getting some KIs, you might lose them. The NPC dialogue isn't too clear on this.
There were no direct drops from mobs, of any kind.
Mob Details
All the mobs seem to have pretty serious DT, probably 50% (confirm by Brixy as 50%, per Air Knife expected enspell dmg). But they aren't hard. They hit like 130s. AoE/Cleaving is extremely nerfed.
Pulling mobs is weird. Any initial spell cast before initial aggro / dynamic level adjustment may land, but will not remain on the mob. You will not see a message to reflect this.
If you pull with silence (while it's un-aggroed), it appears the silence instantly wears without any message, likely due to the dynamic-level adjustment which happens as soon as you aggro (credit to Moonlightagb for this theory, I think it's correct). Silencing twice is probably needed. This doesn't matter much in a party, but if you're solo and mob density is high this effect could be pretty annoying. Other examples later verified by others: If you pull with Immanence, the skill chain will not complete. If you pull with Dia, you can sleep right after.
Mob respawn is on the order of a few minutes but I was pretty lonely this morning. I had one floor with a couple groups and it felt faster, might be dynamic spawn rate.
Aside from the initial-aggro weirdness, everything can be debuffed and slept as expected. Sneak/invis work fine, but true aggro mobs remain like Imps and such.
Getting the goods
In order for the chest to open, you need to finish all of the zone, not just one section. So Apollyon zone is 18 KIs, Temenos zone should be 25 KIs. If the chest says "it won't open", you need more KIs. The chests are located at the exit of each "top floor" in each section. However, you can only open a chest once you have finished all the sections (NW,NE,SW,SE,etc).
After getting all KIs in Apollyon, each character had earned:
About 4000 units from killing mobs and climbing floors
3000 units from finding a shiny ??? on the ground and clicking it
3000 units (one character in the party got 5000 units, no idea why) directly from the chest
So each character of a 6-person party left a ~90 minute run with 10-12k units. EP was ~15k/hr, but this is ML50s fighting level 130s. Maybe it's better if you're lower.
My initial limit on Apollyon units was 30,000. After I opened the chest, that increased to 33,000. It looks to increase 3000 more with each chest open.
Apollyon Units are used to upgrade AF pieces to +4.
Temenos Units are used to upgrade relic pieces to +4.
The upgrade costs are:
Head: 20k units
Body: 30k units
Hands: 15k units
Legs: 25k units
Feet: 10k units
Once I got to 10k units, the furnace did allow me to trade a foot piece, though I didn't choose to complete the process. Trading any other slot did nothing.
I did get the title Apollyon Razer, which I think is just the same as the old title lol
