A world full of hippies is far more troubling. Someone is hugging a tree right now and no one is stopping them.

I find both to be very troubling.

If a pregnant woman is a host, her fetus is a parasite. This isn't even a clever or novel statement, either, and it is more true than not. Fetuses have to flood the uterus with retroviruses (that are contained in our DNA, by the by) just to suppress the mother's immune system from attacking and destroying the foreign cells. 50% of mom's DNA is nothing like similar enough according to her immune defenses.
Basically, following this logic further, it isn't that a novel bunch of cells have more rights than a fully-formed and contributing human being. It's that a tapeworm does, too.

GOP Senate Candidate Defends Use Of 'Wetbacks' Slur As 'Normal As Breathing Air'
Quote: A U.S. Senate candidate is facing fierce criticism after saying ranchers should be free to shoot "wetbacks" on sight, using a derogatory term that the candidate describes as "normal" in his home state.
Texas Republican Chris Mapp, who is challenging Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) in the upcoming GOP primary, made the remarks during an interview with the Dallas Morning News' editorial board. The board noted Mapp's remarks in its February 16 endorsement of Cornyn.
"South Texas businessman Chris Mapp, 53, told this editorial board that ranchers should be allowed to shoot on sight anyone illegally crossing the border on to their land, referred to such people as 'wetbacks,' and called the president a 'socialist son of a ***,' the editorial reads.
Mapp later defended his remarks to the San Antonio Express-News, claiming use of the racial epithet is as "normal as breathing air in South Texas."
“We can't have illegal immigrants, drug cartels, human traffickers or terrorists coming across our border,” Mapp said. “Our borders can either be sealed by choice or force, and so far choice hasn't worked.”
Mapp has also detailed his views on immigration on his campaign website.
"Let's face it, there would be a lot less concrete, roofs, and landscaping without illegal immigrants (yes, illegal immigrants - that is what they are)," Mapp writes. "The only reason they flood here is because of opportunity and because we allow it. There is no reason we can't stop the influx at the border - remove the politics and let the Border Patrol do their job."
"That kind of rhetoric is discouraging from anybody," Cornyn said Friday of Mapp's use of the racial slur. "I recognize this is a free country but that's not the sort of way to gain people's confidence that you care about them and you want to represent their concerns in the halls of Congress."
The Republican primary will be held March 4. In addition to Cornyn and Mapp, six other candidates are vying for the nomination, including Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas).

That really is just how people talk in Texas. They really are that ignorant. He isn't the first person to say that either, that idea has been circulating for years, decades even.

10. Democrat Fritz Hollings of South Carolina thinks being from Africa makes you a cannibal: “You’d find these potentates from down in Africa, you know, rather than eating each other, they’d just come up and get a good square meal in Geneva.”
9. Howard Dean reaches out: “I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks.”
8. California Democrat Diane Watson thinks interracial marriage is icky: “He’s married to a white woman. He wants to be white. He wants a colorless society. He has no ethnic pride. He doesn’t want to be black.”
7. Howard Dean thinks service positions are for minorities, not big fancy white people: “You think the Republican National Committee could get this many people of color in a single room? … Only if they had the hotel staff in here.”
6. Joe Biden explains why southern Democrats should vote for him: “My state was a slave state.”
5. “Conscience of the Senate” and former Klansman Robert Byrd on equal opportunity: “I’ve seen a lot of white n*ggers in my time.
4. Hillary Clinton does an impression (complete with accent) of an African-American man who didn’t know what Emily’s List was: “She’s supportin’ all these people. She’s supportin’ Sen. Dianne Feinstein . She’s supported Sen. Barbara Boxer . . . She supported everybody. Why won’t she support me?”
3. Democratic Mayor of New Orleans Ray Nagin denies that white people might live in New Orleans: “I don’t care what people are saying Uptown or wherever they are. This city will be chocolate at the end of the day.”"
2. Democrat Steny Hoyer reviews Michael Steele’s career: “[He has] a career of slavishly supporting the Republican Party.”
1. Then Senator Joe Biden fills us in on who works at convenience stores: “You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent … I’m not joking.”

-- Edwin W. Edwards, former governor of Louisiana when asked about his chances of winning against the Republican candidate, David Duke, a former grand wizard of the KKK. "I could not lose unless I was caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
Nancy Pelosi on the economy: “Every month that we do not have an economic recovery package 500 million Americans lose their jobs.”
Marion Barry, former mayor of Washington, D.C.: “If you take out the killings, Washington actually has a very, very low crime rate.”
—Barack Obama, on a Kansas tornado that killed 12 people. ''In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died -- an entire town destroyed.''
President Obama..."I dont want my kid to be punished with a baby!"
And the Worst one, sorry its so long I know liberals have a weak attention span.
PRESIDENT OBAMA: That generally the constitution is a charter of negative liberties. It says what the states can’t do to you. It says what the federal government can’t do to you but it doesn’t say what the state government or the federal government must do on your behalf. And that hasn’t shifted and one of the tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so focused, I think that there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power about which you bring redistributive change.

Your point? not all of those are stupid, just highly out of context, only looks bad to the ill informed.
Yes there's some zingers in there, mostly errors, but they pale in comparison to the blatant stupidity by the zealots.

If all Republicans had to worry about were some simple errors, poor wording, or out-of-context quoting, we wouldn't be in too bad a spot.

In the dumbass quote arena, nobody touches Cletus W Bush...
"Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?"
"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."
"One of the great things about books is sometimes there are some fantastic pictures."
"Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream."
And my personal favorite...
"There's an old saying in Tennessee, I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee: fool me once, shame on, shame on you? Fool me... you can't get fooled again."

That really is just how people talk in Texas. They really are that ignorant. He isn't the first person to say that either, that idea has been circulating for years, decades even. I'll admit that there is a higher than average population here that are from small/isolated areas that have some issues with this. I've had to live in some of those places for a while. But I wouldn't judge the entire state based on those.
I blame small town education systems, poor parenting and a lack of exposure to diversity. But even if they came by it honestly, I don't think it's okay to use this as an excuse. It just lets it keep happening.

I was, and still am, a little apprehensive about posting what I ran across last night on here, since so many default to Texan stereotyping on here, but...
Ugh...
On the heels of this last night.
Quote: Candidate Sees Roadkill As Food, Not Waste
By AP
Associated Press
SAN ANTONIO — A candidate for the Texas House wants to see the state offer up a new kind of roadside dining.
Rack of raccoon or smidgen of pigeon would be on the menu if legislators take up a call by Tink Nathan to allow motorists to collect and consume roadkill. Gathering it currently is a misdemeanor.
“That meat goes to waste. Why not utilize it?” asked Nathan, 72.
The suggestion to expand the state’s culinary options sets Nathan apart from the four other Republicans looking to succeed longtime state Rep. Harvey Hilderbran in District 53, which extends northwest of San Antonio to the border.
Nathan pointed out that harvesting and eating roadkill is legal in other states.
“Certainly not all of it could be saved. Nobody will take it if it’s stinking,” Nathan said.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman Tom Harvey said the agency has no stance on the idea, but added that there are public health and safety issues.
“People stopping on roadsides to harvest dead animals could be struck by vehicles. Eating dead animals found on roadsides could make people sick,” he said.
So, I looked up the incumbent's page to see which counties were represented and where they ranked in child poverty.
Sorry. I really didn't want to put that in a P&R thread. I don't know whether to laugh or cry sometimes.
Diversity stats are given on the 53rd District's Rep's site. I agree with you, and am positive the TEA's District ratings and testing stats would confirm our suspicions. Though, in most cases, it goes without saying.
:/
EDIT: Stupidest thing I've read in state politics this week.
