The one thing that actually pisses me off when it comes to tipping though is when you're charged for "gratuity" which is basically a forced tip, then they still ask for/expect a tip on top of that.
Never in my life will that happen
I always had that removed for "certain" tables who I knew would tip more. But certain tables I made sure that gratuity was stapled on.
Waiting tables and bartending is an easy way to make someone discrimnatory based on attire or race. I refused to take tables based on the wife's purse.

I hate it when they expect a tip of 20% so they purposely give crap service.
The other day we went out to a steak house and this woman pushed a man in his wheelchair out of the way dropping our drinks, and told us we would have to pay for new drinks if we wanted them. then left the mess there and walked away. She decided to bring us food and again moved the man without asking him put our food down on another table and walked away.
We asked if that was our food and she said "oh you didnt eat yet? its cold now. hope you enjoy".
That doesn't deserve a tip at all >.> she tried to fight us for 20% (we had a family dinner had ~10 people was about 250 dollars total because steakhouses are expensive) ...yeah no. push other people out of the way and expect 50 dollars? dont even tell us our food is on another table for 35 minutes. pfft.

By the way I made a post to the whole obligatory tipping deal. Curious as to your input on the matter.
I am just waiting for Nausi. That is when it gets great.
I agree, because of the way a lot of business are set up, I'd think you're a *** for not tipping. This is dependent on service quality of course.
I generally just like to play devils advocate on this subject.
Also, they day before I left for Australia, I went out for dinner with my family and the waitress spilled beer and wine all over me. Still tipped.

Asura.Squishytaru said: »It is not like it happened overnight. People culturally tip in the US, and it became a norm enough to eventually become so expected that it is built into the wage system and tax laws. Funny thing, that's how the concept of employer-provided health insurance got started. Back during World War II, Congress imposed salary caps on many jobs. In order to continue attracting the best talent, employers had to find some form of valuable incentive, so they started offering to pay medical insurance for some people and their families. Fast forward 70 years and we've got a health insurance system that is the picture of self-entitled *** and wages that fail to cover the gap.
While I'm a generous tipper (on the very rare occasions that I do anything that society demands I tip for), I completely see the point about why it is nonsense. That it is tradition means it is just as useful as trephanation, exorcism, and hysterical paroxysm (the meaning of that last one is funny as hell).
I have to say that I'm kind of bored by the article itself, though. There have been several identical stories like this, though the previous ones involved racism instead of homophobia. I'm almost wondering if the Associated Press is just hiring jerkasses to write on restaurant receipts.
If I had to comment on anything, though, it'd be the handwriting. I'm no graphologist, but handwriting like that says a lot about the person in question. It has all the earmarks of someone who learned cursive and perfected it by the 5th grade, which was also the last time she had anything relevant or important to say or write ever. And, yes, that is clearly a woman's handwriting, I'm not just being sexist for laughs. Some schools aren't even bothering to teach children cursive because of how infrequently they'll need to use it when everyone has a multi-function computer that masquerades as a telephone. That atrophy assessment of cursive is only emphasized when a brain-damaged twit like the woman who wrote this note employs the same handwriting as her 11-year-old self (to say nothing of the same critical thinking skills).
Contrast this with people who actually have important things to write. I receive a handwritten letter every week from a physician and it is only through years of practice that I can decipher it. Pharmacists have the same skill. It's because a physician has something worth writing. Most scientists have highly individualized, if messy, handwriting. I've never written anything important or relevant in my life, but I've at least made a point of developing an interesting style of writing for the sake of fooling people into thinking I'm special. Not this stone-brained gobshite, though.
Also, I think the comment about the waitress being a Marine veteran is a clue as to why they thought she was a lesbian. Easy money says she has a strong physique and it's clear she has a sensibly short haircut (long hair and waitresses are as bad a combination as long hair and battlefields).

Personally, I tip well because I guzzle drinks and usually keep the waiter/waitress running. Waiting tables doesn't seem like much but it's back-breaking work. As for the gay aspect of this topic, I've made it known that I don't give two shits about whether someone is gay or not.

No, I meant I won't tip them once I am charged a gratuity; as it's still an option on your credit/debit receipt and I've actually had waiters that expected extra on top of the forced gratuity.
That's what I meant would never happen

Nah, there is nothing they can say. They can point fingers, but for 20 years the GOP has fought workplace equality, they believe a person can be fired for being gay.

I read the article, and I didn’t see either religion or conservatism mentioned as a motive, but somehow both have already been blamed within the first few posts of this thread… That sounds an awful lot like profiling, and isn’t that supposed to be wrong? Can't this person just be an a-hole? While you are correct that Christianity wasn't mentioned, the social conservatism in the message is self-evident. I thought the only thing self-evident was that this person is a cheapskate and didn't want to tip.
I'm conservative, and I've had flamingly homosexual servers before, and if they're good at their job they get 20%, the same as a heterosexual. I wouldn't have ever even considered basing my tip on anything other than services rendered... Conservatism: I must be doing it wrong. That's noble of you. There is however a difference between fiscal conservatism and social conservatism, each of which exists as a spectrum.
One of the major unifying aspects of social conservatism is its dedicated opposition of anyone and anything that does not fit into traditional ideas about sex, gender, and family. The people who left this note saw a woman with short hair, (correctly) identified her as a lesbian, and admitted to withholding their tip for this reason alone. This fact places them cleanly on the radically conservative end of the spectrum.

The gay community is working on writing you a personal thank you letter Anna. Expect it through Fed Ex, but then again Fed Ex sucks so don't expect it at all. I saw a Fed Ex truck and a UPS truck have a head-on collision at work one time. I have never laughed harder.

Otherwise, if you don't like minimum wage(or lower), then go get a job that doesn't pay minimum wage.
This is coming from the guy that lost his bike and had anonymous online contributions pay for a new one.
You'll forgive my lack of surprise....
Just out of curiosity, had you considered "getting a job that would pay for a new bike?"

Part of being a good waiter is reading your table. When I worked at Cheesecake Factory the waiting staff was 3/4 female white/pretty and 1/4 gay. We had ONE straight waiter. LoL
It worked perfectly! We gays would give all the girls the tables of all men so they could "milk" the tips and they'd give us the tables of all girls because they thought all female tables hated them. Family and couples got split evenly.

The gratuity is the tip... You're not understanding what I'm saying.
You get charged gratuity as a service charge, then STILL expect for you to leave a physical money tip on the table or write one in; via the "tip" section of the receipt. Aka wanting tip AND gratuity or basically two tips.
Otherwise, if you don't like minimum wage(or lower), then go get a job that doesn't pay minimum wage.

I was actually against the idea for that thread; someone who had PM'd me finally convinced me to give in; but in that sense, I'm grateful that everyone helped out, but did not expect/think it mandatory for anyone to have helped out.

Other than not to lose your goddamn bike?

Well plain and simple these people were ***. Like Azryel said tips should be based on the quality of services rendered and nothing more.

I think you're misinterpreting the bill then. Most places have the tip line there regardless because thats how the computer system works, and is on all checks/slips.

Often the mandatory gratuity is 18-20% which is considered "minimum" for a large group and/or high volume touristy area. The tip line is still there so you can bump it up if service is awesome.

Whaaaaaaaaaat????
When people put lame locks on at work I open them just because they are lame. I leave decent ones alone.
As far as my road bikes go (been biking all my life, but who cares about the bmx/mountain bikes lol)
First one; Backed over (parked in the grass and friend's brother decided to park in the grass instead of the parking lot)
Second one; Stolen
Third one; Got hit while riding it, destroyed the poor thing
Fourth one; Stolen
Fifth one (AH/BG Bike); Uncle uses it/likes it so he gave me the cost of it towards a newer bike. Bike is still in the household and I use it from time to time.
6th one; Stolen and recovered by police, still using.

When road bike No. 4 got stolen (Cannondale Multisport r800), my friend got his bike stolen (Cannondale Multisport r500), literally a week later, less than a quarter mile away from where mine was stolen @.@
This town sucks

Not that it is really on topic, but bike theft is common as muck. I've lived in three different cities, have owned at least 5 bikes in my lifetime, and all but my current one were stolen. The last one was locked with a U-lock in my privacy-fenced backyard and stolen on my birthday by means of hacking my fence apart with an axe. I park my bike indoors now and hate people.
