Sadly there are still people in todays world that don't tip waiters/waitress or they tip very poorly.(imo if you are going out to eat and say you know don't have enough $ to tip, just go back home and make dinner). Just sad that they had to actually write out why they didn't tip, and the reason for it is bull crap. Goes to show people go out of their way to make others feel like ***.
While I think tipping is *** to begin with, that being the particular reason they didn't tip is pretty shitty of them
Why is tipping ***?
"Here, pay our employees for us so we don't have to"
Personally I get tips on top of a standard wage. What about that?
Same thing applies; pay employees minimum, and expect them to get anything extra from customers.
We're one of the only countries that do tipping. For me, it really truly has to be earned. Otherwise, if you don't like minimum wage(or lower), then go get a job that doesn't pay minimum wage.
That "we live off our tips" is a croc, if you get paid low enough for your livelyhood to depend on tips, the problem is with your job/employer

Because it's considered obligatory in North America. Why should someone have to pay someone extra for doing their job? It's also unfair, IMO, that it's legal to give people in the service industry lower wages because they may earn tips. I tip because I find it usually gets me better service. Who likes waiting at the bar like a schmuck for a drink, AMIRITE?
The fact that the people left a note just means they're shitty people. My only problem with the article is mentioning that the 'victim' was a veteran, as if that should warrant them getting special treatment.

I read the article, and I didn’t see either religion or conservatism mentioned as a motive, but somehow both have already been blamed within the first few posts of this thread… That sounds an awful lot like profiling, and isn’t that supposed to be wrong? Can't this person just be an a-hole?
It's using pathos as a tactic in persuasion even though the article masquerades in a bias-free format. Lately reporting has become less informative and more biased, but that's a whole other tomato.

In my experience a lower percentage of black people tip :P
I'll tip if the service is good; I just think the whole tipping system is ***; and if the service sucks, they just get nothing plain and simple
Tipping positions at a lot of places make mininum wage, excluding tips. The new system sends their individual food/beverage sales to the IRS. The IRS assumes servers receive 10% from their sales, so when you don't tip your server you're subjecting them to a possible audit. Always tip your server ATLEAST 10%.
Feel bad for the server not getting a tip on that check. I never had that problem. I did have a table of gay men who were flirting with me and I didn't flirt back. I got a zero for tip and a phone number....
I wanted to feed those gays to the Westboro Baptist Church!

While you are correct that Christianity wasn't mentioned, the social conservatism in the message is self-evident.

I don't get paid the minimum though. I make more than my co-worker in the same position, co-workers I have worked with in other locations, and even more than the office manager who is in charge of my schedule.
Point is tipping is not just about making up for the wage employers are not covering enough.
and I agree with that, so we're not even really having an argument. Spence pretty much hit the nail on the head though, it's pretty much considered mandatory here, which I simply don't agree with.

This will sound callous, but it's not our problem they have a shitty job.
