I've just started using this program per the advice of several people, and have found it works well. However, it tends to slow down my computer by A LOT. I uninstalled it to see if it was really AVG, and my pc worked much faster right after I restarted. Any suggestions as to why this might be happening, and if it has happened to you would be great! Thanks!

AVG sucks... uses too much RAM to operate, and it's virus definitions aren't always up to date, and it slows computers down.

I use AVAST home edition, register it free for up to a year, automatically updates itself, and it doesn't take up as much RAM as AVG.

Free Virus scanners are always a scam in my book.
they'll just eventually give you an adware to "Upgrade" "buy" etc.

I just dont use a virus scanner. Windows Vista x64, Firefox w/ Adblock+ and NoScript, router firewall, UAC turned on (secure desktop turned off) and I don't go around downloading/running shady programs from the internet.

No viruses, trojans, hax, etc on my computer in about 2 years. Virus Scanners are such a resource hog. Don't put yourself in a position to be compromised and you shouldn't need to worry about it.

See, I'm afraid to take the complete plunge and do without like you. I've pretty much got the same ***you do (except I disabled UAC because it *** up my G11 keyboard, and was annoying as *** all).

I use AVG free, I don't notice too much of an issue with it slowing my ***down (not to say it doesn't, I just don't notice it lol). Compared to my previous AV (Norton Internet Security, the bloatware, system resource eating, king of AV software) AVG is lightning fast LOL

funny story I dont use words I dont know the meaning to but here for your viewing pleasure ( of and you know for a word most people would us a dictionary)
cynci-a faultfinding captious critic ; especially : one who believes that human conduct is motivated wholly by self-interest
hippie- a usually young person who rejects the mores of established society (as by dressing unconventionally or favoring communal living) and advocates a nonviolent ethic ; broadly : a long-haired unconventionally dressed young person
ie not related!!!

Common sense is the best antivirus. However, an extra layer of antivirus software and an additional firewall is good too.

Just get NoScript, AdBlock Plus for Firefox and Avast and you should be okay.

I personally use ESET NOD32, and i am ridiculously happy with the result, so i put it on all five of the other computers in the house.

USUALLY you have to pay for it >_> but the nice folks a TPB provide a "free" trial....

Well for someone who goes to those porn sites, I would strongly recommend anti-virus and anti-malware programs. Those sites are what I consider shady and they are always doing browser hi-jacking, automatic program downloading, etc. Generally bad stuff all around.

Norton slowed my ***down soooo bad. I used it for many years, since the mid to late 90's...used to be really good back then, lightweight, powerful. Now it's just such a system hog.

Or at least it was in 2007 when I dumped it. Reboot time with Norton was like 5+ minutes. Without 30 seconds. Yeah...glad I dumped that crap.
