Items only drop for the jobs opposite of what you're playing currently.
I have actually witnessed that several times and such notion is particularly efficient on Abby quests that reward job seals for upgrading empyrean armor... More than often I receive seals for jobs that I already completed the +2 set for. -_-;
The purpose is simple enough: Make sure you pay your monthly fee the longest time possible and a eventual meaningful reward is the dangling carrot. >.>

Anyone remember you can't touch the walls in Castle Zvahl Bailey or something bad will happen? It was a mystery to what specifically, but it was a very stern warning I would always get.
Also, in North San d'Oria, I never walk on the grass. KEEP OFF THE GRASS!

Don't respond to Omgwheresmyname shouts or something bad will happen.
Something bad usually did happen: Taereon (Me) would get all the Voidwatch drops!

I have a impression that the random numbers generator runs on a sort of conveyor belt with set numbers in it. And some people seem to have a good idea of how it works so they aways lot good numbers.
If it's used for more things than just lots and /random what you said totally makes sense. :)

Most games use time as a random number 'seed' (RL time/'game time') that is converted to what is usually a 32bit value.
When you need a 'random' number, that value is usually taken and masked/scaled to the appropriate numerical range needed.
Depending on the implementation of the random number function, this can have interesting in game side effects like multiple crafters HQ'ing or failing synths if they start crafting at nearly the same moment (minimum chance to fail a synth being calculated using server time as the random number seed)
Given that MMOs need alot of random numbers generated for thousands of players and that ffxi is over 10 years old, I wouldnt be surprised if it used one of the older 'quick and dirty' algorithms to generate its random numbers which means it does not have a truly random distribution but can be 'streaky' for better or worse.
Alot of games use this one to generate random numbers, but there are many other variants that are faster and 'less random':
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mersenne_twister
All that being said, I do know a couple people that /random until they get past a streak of low numbers or start getting high numbers in the hopes SE's random number generator is old+streaky.

ffxiah supersition: If you post in a topic and no one else posts after a maximum time of 5 minutes, you have broken the thread and you are bad and you should feel bad.
This has happened to me so many times ; ;
We also believed that a THF only has so many TH possiblities, and that once you use them up, you'll never get anything good again. So you should rotate ppl who are your THFs.

DRing/Ridill/KC and certain other extremely rare items are throttled from dropping too often per server per day, regardless of how much you spam the NM/Events trying to obtain them.
This is done to maintain the prestige in getting them, prevent possible exploitation in getting said item to drop, as well as keep people playing+paying longer.
I totally agree with sacrificing Tarus for better drops also

A couple friends and I always used to use muteppo (the fireworks) before opening any chests. We felt like we got better drops this way.

The way I understood it is that if you have in your inventory the following items:
Four-leaf Mandragora Bud
Lucky Egg
Wild Rabbit Tail
...as well as having a Millionaire Desk set up in your Mog House.
Then you need to face the enemy you are engaged to towards the south east. It also needs to be New Moon.
It also needs to be a Full Moon in real life. You need to spin around in your chair 3 times. Then touch your left index finger to your nose and say: Abracadabra.
Then moar drops!
Edit: How funny. I didn't notice that image already said TRUE STORY on it when I made it. Oh well. Double TRUE STORY = DOUBLE DROPS.

* Make sure your weapon animation hits the goblin's bomb during the animation and it will force him to drop it on himself.
* Sacrificing a tarutaru improves drop rates.
* Never invite BST to anything. Brady Guides say their pet will cut into your exp, lower your drop rate, kick your dog and run off with your wife.

For the longest time, I would always Chain Affinity before killing a monster with blue magic in order to learn spells.
I was fairly convinced of this, as I had an amazing streak of successes with this until it stopped working for me, lol.

Old veteran player inside joke
Brady "Guide" for Final Fantasy XI is a very old and outdated guide. It is common fodder for jokes from the vets that were around when it was first published and this game was new. It started rumors of spells that don't exist "Diaga II" anyone? It also listed horrible job combinations as well as just a bunch of incorrect or inconclusive information.
Anyhoo, that's more of an inside joke and not to be taken as fact. In fact, back way before an update that fixed it, the BST's pet's level was taken into account when figuring party exp for kills so if a BST got lucky and somehow charmed and 2'hrd a monster 20 levels higher than you, it would nerf exp like a party member was 20 levels higher. That has been fixed in an update and BST pet's levels are no longer figured into party exp. Not that anyone charms much anymore.

It is a known fact that Treasure Hunter has no effect on the drop rate of Defending ring from King Behemoth.
However that didn't stop me from throwing a Tarutaru thief on there , getting TH10, then trying to kill him, before killing King Behemoth, while holding my breath when the ring proceeded to drop today.

The pet's level is still used in EXP calculation.
"If the Beastmaster uses a pet of a higher level than the highest level party member, the pet's level is used as the highest level party member for purposes of calculating Experience Points."
The only thing they fixed is that the Master receives full experience as opposed to losing some due to having a pet. Otherwise you could just get lucky and Familiar a pet 10-20 levels higher than you and just burn through monsters that check has VT-IT for massive exp lol...which would be awesome.

Actually, the way it is now, BST pets will only factor into exp for both the Master and his party / alliance if the pet is Tough or higher. Even Match and lower pets don't lower exp.
Before, just having a pet cut down on exp, and if that pet was T+, it would cut the exp again for super gimp exp.

Doing a shout during an event saying "SE, you better pay what you owe!" for drops..
uhhh..
The crafting thing.. I still do it.
<call4> before killing a mob was my thing.. oh how many people I got doing that.. >.>b
So I was wondering if any of you have any superstitions when you play FFXI? Superstitions such as a specific routine of actions, carrying specific items around for good luck, or the most well known superstition regarding moon phases?
I always carried a 4 leaf mandragora bud in my inventory, I'm not sure why really, I'm not sure if I even believed it made any sort of difference to anything, but I carried it around anyway so I guess I had a superstition that it might help in a way nobody had discovered before :o
Share your superstitions :)
