Well technically New Zealand isn't a region of Australia, but if those idiots that wanted to merge the countries together got their way, it would be <.<

The same goes for Aussies for us, I had a woman ring me concerning some food posioning on a Quantas flight (Grandmother ate fish that was spoiled) and I thought it was a man whose name was "Ken", after a couple of repeats I realised she was saying "Kim". Also, your 'six' souns like 'sex' o.O

NZ and Oz have a happy few decades of mocking each other :P

oh lawd, y'all would never have understood my grandparents on my moms side, they grew up in the nowhere of the tennessee mts in the early-mid 20th century.

one example: rerned/rernt=ruined=spoiled, eg "that milk is rernt now, throw it out"

as for accents i hate, most of the accents in new england, they sound so snippy and uptight sometimes

also stereotypical wisconsonian.

not necessarily an accent, but more of how they are, californian. it blows my mind how they can be so laid back about everything.
i can sympathize...my moms family is all from arkansas ~hangs head in shame~

The whole "bubbler" thing is silly. Bubbler was just a brand name that was common, and it caught on like band-aid or kleenex.
Fun fact, they are not referred to as bubblers up north. If you were to ask where the nearest one was you'd be met with blank stares.
Throughout my childhood EVERYONE called them bubblers.
The hell is a bubbler >.> real question here never heard of this before XD
A "bubbler" is what others call a drinking fountain. But fountains belong in parks. Why would you want to drink from the thing people toss pennies into? ;)

I grew up in a Milwaukee suburb, and have since lived in south Florida and now Maritimes Canada. (Talk about hearing diverse accents in those places!) I still catch myself calling them bubblers.

Something else I catch myself saying is "TYME machine", referring to an ATM. TYME was a common brand of ATM in SE Wisconsin. Really confuses the hell out of people when they think you are asking for something from Back to the Future.

My husband (who grew up in Trinidad) is amused when I refer to stop lights as "stop and go lights". (While his accent is pretty diminished after living in the US for 20 years, he still uses a lot of Trini slang that makes me laugh... like "sweetdrink" (soda), "trolley" (shopping cart), "grains" (referring to the cat's kibble).)

Like others in this thread have said, the portrayal of the Wisconsin accent is pretty exaggerated compared to how Wisconsinites really speak. The main thing that people pick up on when I speak is the way I pronounce my "a" like in the words "bag" or "rag".

Some things I have heard people who grew up in Milwaukee from my parents generation say is "Highway a-hundert" to refer to Highway 100, and "Fon ju lac" for Fon du lac".

I take your Central Scotland and raise you one Newcastle. I work up there quite often and for the love of god I just don't understand what most of the locals are saying, so I just nod politely with a smile on my face when deep inside I'm actually doing this :-(

LMAO! Why aye min pet.

I was actually going to post the geordie accent but I actually quite like it >_>

Pshhhhhhhh. You've got it backwards! You're the ones with the weird accent, not us :p

But yeah, I know NZ isn't part of Aus... It's just that Aus accents really don't vary much by region, and we get a lot of Kiwis here, so it's the closest thing. It's easier to pick peoples class than where they're from in Aussie from the way they speak lol. The poorer background someone comes from, the worse they are at speaking English and the more HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE slang they use lol.

Being Navy, I have been all over and sampled different accents from every corner of this big blue marble. Honestly, the most annoying thing to me is the different ways people use words or when folks don't have the home training not to use homegrown slang when they are not at home. Also, Cockney English is migraine inducing.

I would say the biggest example that comes to mind would be when I was stationed in Europe and encountered a family that spoke with heavy Cockney slang and accents. Even after having worked with Iraqis, Afghanis, Italians, Dutch, Germans, Pollacks, Slavs, Filipinos, Japanese, and others with broken or limited English, to this day, I still think having to decipher Cockney English was the biggest hurdle.

As for myself, I am from a small town called Belle Chasse in Louisiana. I have been told that every now and then, I slide back into my cajun accent. Particularly when I get excited or when talking to family.

The one thing about the Southern accent I'm not a fan of is their pronunciation of the days of the week. My father is from Alabama, and I bug him about this constantly. "Hey Dad, when do they pick up the garbage this week?" "Mon-dee."

Man, I'm surprised at how overly sensitive people from Wisconsin and Minnesota are. I know there are people in my state that have a bizarre accent.

Oh no! I've been told by my German and English cousins that I get that American southern twang when I drink too much. LOL!

I'd imagine most people with a hatred for southern accents are probably referring to the southern drawl that exists in areas like South Carolina, northern Georgia and Alabama.

I hate the drawl myself. I also hate the hillbilly hick accent of certain parts of Mississippi.

People from Shreveport, LA also piss me off.

So true Magnuss! My family is mostly from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, and whenever I go home, I get hounded because I "speak too proper". Basically, because I have bled out most of my accent and speak the King's, they need a translator to understand me. ^^

I never thought I had an accent. I lived the first 9-10 years of my life in Michigan, no real accents there. After that I lived in New Mexico (darn those Texans! Except Slip and Zahrah ~.^) and no real accents there. Then I moved up north to Idaho, no major accents here. But then I said 'mule' to my husband in a conversation and he was incredibly confused because he thought I was saying 'meal.' D:

My father lives in Jesuit Bend and my baby brother's wife and son are in Metarie (he's in Asscrackistan).

I was born in Texas and lived there for 7 years before moving up to Wisconsin. I've picked up accents from both places to equal out to (what I hope) a more general, non-accented speaking voice. I don't have the Southern drawl, but in the same note, I don't speak all nasally and elongate my A's when necessary.

Yeah, Minnesotan accents get to me, but I definitely would not say that Wisconsin and Minnesotans have similar accents. For instance, we say "Wisconsin" very differently. I don't have the typical MN accent, but my bf does...half the time on purpose. And the bag thing is "baig" like "bait". I have a hard time with people knowing what I'm saying in MN when I say it the normal way...

I live in the deep south USA. My entire family have pretty strong accents and friends all think its weird because I don't have any accent at all. Idk why, maybe from television and public school, that'd be my guess. Though occasionally I'll say something in a hick accent then immediately correct myself.
