/comfort but what do you think
Right now if you had a great friend who wanted more and really cared about you would you jump into it and risk the friendship or would you be the type to play it safe and stay friends as long as possible to make sure things were clearer

Not getting into a relationship with a friend (this is assuming there's chemistry and you both want to and w/e) is silly. The whole 'ruining friendship' thing is kinda ***. If you're real friends, even if you break up you don't lose the friendship... and getting into a serious relationship (assuming you want one) with someone who isn't a friend is pretty much setting yourself up for trouble unless a miracle happens and they turn out to be like your best friend.

if you don't start as friends
there's nothing at stake if it goes sour
True, and this is perfectly fine for casual dating.
