I'm curious, can a cochlea implant be used in someone who was born deaf? Doesn't necessarily have to be "Born" deaf, could be a situation like in There Will Be Blood. (Deafened very young)

I'm just curious cause if so, how would they "Learn" to hear?

it depends on the kind of loss they have....if they are born without a cochlea, or it is deformed then it won't help. If the hearing center of the brain does not function then an implant won't help. Technically the implant replaces the "hairs" inside the cochlea that stimulate the nerves that send signals to the brain.

Because they are implanting children so young they do not have to "learn" how to hear with it....it happens naturally as the child grows. It is the person who is implanted later in life that has to 'Learn" what the different sounds mean. Again, it depends on the severity of the loss before the surgery as to how much learning has to go on.

You know I always find it sooo funny that when they do a <call> to get my attention that I immeditatly response that <call> is bloody useless since i'm deaf.....

As for Sign Language being hard from what I was reading on the forums, I generally find that people struggle to learn from teachers that are hearing compared to deaf teachers.... It's annoys me sometimes that a hearing person could become a teacher after qualifications and still be a bad teacher... don't get me wrong, I have met 2 hearing teachers who are fab at what they do, but the others...... let just say that there were times when i had to sign "what the f@%* you talking about... or what the hell are you signing?" lol

I learned sign language on the job at a school for the deaf in 1981..(damn that long ago) is pretty much sink or swim in that situation. I worked 40 hours a week with kids from 3-16yrs old and adults. I was pulled into interpreting 18 months later when my supervisor's interpreter didn't show up for a meeting. I didn't get any formal training until 1996-1998 when I graduated from an Interpreter Training Program.
I had experience teaching other topics so when I was asked to taech Sign language late in 1999 I agree'd but said i would NOT teach the upper level classes because I felt a native signer would be better for the students.

I see alot of this too...too many people teaching signing modes thinking it is sign language and messing everything up (SEE2 makes me crazy)

Hi!

Sorry for bumping this thread!

I'm looking for a few native/near-native signers of American Sign Language to help me out on a project I'm doing for my ASL linguistics class. What I mean by native/near-native signers is people who have grown up in Deaf residential schools, have Deaf parents, or have been using ASL and have been involved in the Deaf community for most of their lives.

It should take at the very most only 20 minutes of your time!

What is involved?
Basically, I have six signed sentences uploaded on my YouTube. Each sentence is signed three times, and one sign is substituted for two others that are related in meaning. The sentences themselves are not long. All I need is some sort of judgment on the accuracy of each of the sentences with respect to the sign substitutions - about two or three sentences, but anything will suffice.

If you're interested in helping, please either PM me or just post below and I'll send you more information, the YouTube links and my e-mail you can e-mail your comments. Also, if you know anyone else who's willing to spend a few minutes of their time, refer them to the links!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!
