I'm curious, can a cochlea implant be used in someone who was born deaf? Doesn't necessarily have to be "Born" deaf, could be a situation like in There Will Be Blood. (Deafened very young)
I'm just curious cause if so, how would they "Learn" to hear?

I'm just curious cause if so, how would they "Learn" to hear? Babies (if they are deaf) can get cochlea implants after they are 6 months old. I don't know why they cant get before, but i think it is a health safety reason. I believe they are required to learn to hear in special educational. There are many methods to use to teach them how to hear things as they grow up.

A cochlear implant is more or less an alternative way for your brain to receive sound signals. It works for people who have never heard before, and it works for people born hearing and then lost the ability to do so.
The differences are when you developed having the ability to hear, so your brain developed that sense, versus becoming implanted after fully developing and your brain strengthened other senses at the lack of being able to hear. Its much more difficult for the latter.
And yeah, I think the 6 month period is bc it would be dangerous to operate any younger.

There are dangers to this no matter what age you have it. my mom has had two so far if something goes wrong with this one she cant have another one and will be really screwed. She opted to only get one side done and had problems with it (ie. got hit in the head and it started to poke back out of her skin O.o) so after that one was removed they did the other side. Personally i chose to wait tell my hearing is much worse then it is now to get it. I hate "normal" hearing aids tho gah could never get over hearing all those sounds i didn't know were there lol.

Before I get cochlea implant, I used to have hearing aids and never work for me very well. I barely hear anything. Lol

Dunno how the cochlea implant vs hearing aids views apply in the USA
But in the UK cochlea implant is generally viewed as a negative status in the deaf community
I myself is a hearing aid user, I use oral and sign language to communicate with hearing/deaf people
Most deaf people here actually kinda finds it's hard to get on with people who are cochlea implants and i never really understood why, I myself was offered a cochlea implant and i respectfully refused to have one cos i felt, why change who i am, and also the fact that i didn't want to feel like a Borg with technology surgically attached to my body lol (a little sci-fi humour i use with my friends) but i have friends who have cochlea implants and i get on with them :)

Yep she showed me it was icky! She said it hurt really bad they made her wait almost a month to remove it because it happened around the holidays -.-

I thought it was viewed as negative as well in the US as far as deaf community goes but it seems like alot of people here have them i've only known two people that have got it i chose to wait but one day ill get one as well. I read lips decently and can hear a bit so i do ok but it is hard it any group setting.[code]

I have been an interpreter for 24 years and have seen the development of new modes of manual communication (cued speech, signing exact english, and signed english) and new technologies. When Cochlear Implants first came out there was a major up roar from the Deaf Community in the U.S. saying that American Sign Language and the Deaf culture would vanish in a few generations. As most deaf children are born to hearing parents this is in fact gradually happening because fewer and fewer deaf children are being exposed the the language in it's pure form. Within the deaf community it is still seen as a barbaric act forced on the children who need to be accepted as they are. There are a number of young adults who have chosen to get implants because they are open to the positive impact clearer hearing can have.
When implants first came out the cost of implantation was $75K which was all out of pocket because it was not covered by insurance. Today is is around $35K between the implant and the surgery. It takes 6 weeks for the surgical site to heal enough to have the implant and external unit turned on and then time for the person to learn how to use it. The older the person is when they are implanted the longer it takes for the person to learn how to decipher the sounds, and this is why they implant children so young now because language learning begins around 9-12 months old and explodes for the next 2-3 yearsOne of the things I am seeing an increase in parents who are still learning sign language as a back up in case something goes wrong with the implant.
And if you find learning sign language hard you have a lousy teacher who is teaching you in an uninspired manner. ASL is a conceptual language so getting the handle on the signs is easy. Unfortunately I would need to be on a web cam to show you what i mean. It is moving onto the grammar and syntax before you have a good grasp of the signs that makes it hard. ASl sentence structure is closer to french used in the early 1800's because that is the time period when French sign language was brought to america and gradually evolved into American sign language. (going to stop here or this will be a huge wall of text)
To the person who was struggling with the telephone..I did not see if you sign as well. If you do there are several companies that offer Video Phones with something called VCO (voice carry over) you speak on the phone as normal but you are able to look at a sign language interpreter over a high Tech video system. I work for such a company, the interpreters get comments all the time about how Video phones have helped communication between themselves and their deaf family members, friends or client.
Time and technology changes everything, hopefully they will make similar advances in helping the blind as they have with the deaf.

I have a 4000 watt stereo system thats always blasting when I play with ffxi muted, so im as good as deaf when I play! Even IRL I dont hear the door or phone none of that stuff just mad beats. Me and my wife are fully fluent in sign language though due to my uncle being deaf and my wife works with hearing-impaired individuals for a living.

This is what I have, too. They realized my hearing was going out when I was around thirteen, and there's nothing they can do about it. Somedays I'm okay with it and accept it, and other days it really gets me down. :(

I'm not completely deaf personally but since i was 4 i've only had my left ear to hear anything with, had a growth on my right ear drum which caused me to go practically deaf. Since then i've had to adopt different ways of listening to someone like tilting my good ear towards said person to have a conversation with them, i've learnt to live with it but my heart goes out to anyone who has it in anyway shape or form.

Sound induced deafness is the leading cause of new deafness in the 24-45 age bracket. If you listen to loud music and you ears ring when you turn it off you have done permanent damage to your hearing and once nerves are damaged they stay damaged.
I do not have to deal with losing my hearing yet.....but i will soon because both parents started losing theirs in their mid 60's, and I am slowly creeping up on that age. I get my hearing tested every 2 years, just so I know what is going on. Last year the tests showed that I do have some loss in my left ear but not enough to need a hearing aid...yet.
**Icelord, male interpreters make good money...might want to look into it. I live in the midwest and most of our guys make between $45-$60 per hour because they are in such high demand. I mean what guy wants to go to a Dr. and talk about "male issues" with a female interpreter there.

You are right, male interpreters do make good money. I always rather to have male interpreters for doctors, but sometime i prefer to have female interpreters for any class or event. I gotta admit most of my female interpreters are attractive. ;)

Lol...always a bonus when the interpreters are easy on the eyes.Goes the same for the person you are interpreting for, except easy on the eyes is someone who signs clearly and cleanly so the whole process takes less time.
I am hoping the left ear stabilizes. I work in video relay, because I am right handed my headset is in the left, so if that left side gets too bad I'm pretty much done and I have another good 10-15 years before I can retire with decent money.
<yawn> is late here... looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow.

Hello! :)I am deaf and I am from Quetzalcoatl. I am just curious how many deaf players play this game. I've met a few of them in my server, but I want to meet more in other servers, so we chat in here with many deaf players in ffxi community!
