From my experiences, deaf people rule.

I work at school and my University is well known for our deaf studies program. I've had so many nice deaf people that come in and sign Thank You, smile, acknowledge your existence...unlike many rude capable of hearing/speaking customers.

I even had a deaf lady wish me a Happy Thanksgiving the day before break, like actually manage to speak it to me and a coworker, something a lot of other students/faculty don't even bother to do.

My older brother has a cochlear implant. Very cool stuff, I even read an article back when he had the operation (um i wanna say 10 yrs ago-ish?) about the same technology being used to give blind people partial sight, to see shapes and figures in front of them. Was forever ago I'm sure the technology has improved greatly, like the cochlear has.

He had several friends who played ffxi with him, he always loved ffxi and pso bc he said playing typing-oriented games gave him a level playing field, he'd join ls's etc and play with people for years and then tell them he was deaf, they couldn't believe it.

Also, I know 2 deaf people irl (friends of my bro) who transferred to bahamut and they're names start with H and D...

Yep, its greatly improved, but I still suck at the phone thingy... lol. I only understand fully if i face a person, read his/her lips at same time i hear his/her voice. By now, i know a lot of words if someone behind me. I love it a lot. So i don't feel left out when I am in hearing world.

EDITED: my family sucks at sign expect my wife. shes amazing at it.. so you arent the one. lol

It takes practice. When i was young, i usually went to speech classes to learn how to speak properly with my cochlea implant on, of course.

How old were you when you got it? My brother got his when he was 12, and only on one side. My mom has since gotten her degree in deaf education so I hear stuff about it all the time, nowadays they implant both sides of babies born deaf i think at the 6-month mark? Then they are only behind in hearing development by 6 months and eventually grow to hear just fine, and with the dual implant can tell the direction of sounds and everything. Its amazing...

I got it when i was 10-11 (i wasn't sure). It was uncomfortable at first when i tried it on. I grew up as full deaf. it scares me. lol. I got 1 on my right side. Yes, You are correct. Only at 6 months, but as they get older, they already developed their hearing ability. Whoever gets cochlea implant at early 10 or so takes a lot of practices than babies. It took me 6 years to complete my ability, but my wife helps me to practice my speech skills to improve so i don't lose my ability.

Yeah thats sounds just like my brother's experience. He didnt like hearing everything at once, background noises etc all in one jumbled sound. He got good at recognizing his name when you called him and he wasnt looking, very helpful when you weren't close to the light switch >.>

I agree with that. lol. After a while, my parents finally start to call my name without looking, it gets annoying. I was like stop call my name and i took my cochlea implant off. XD

EDIT: well, my dad and I have same names.. yeah, you get some ideas >.>; lol

I have a degenerative eye disease and am legally blind and if I had to choose between being deaf or blind it wouldn't be an easy decision. I play guitar and love to listen to music. I also have 2 great kids and am blessed to be seeing them growing up with the vision I have remaining. Anyway I guess really the choice between sight or sound would really depend on your life and how you live it.

I can understand sign very well, I fail at being able to sign back... My brother grew up learning cued speech, and most of our childhood I made up my own signs to communicate with him. I know enough to get my point across to other deaf people, I just have to explain I am (Too Weak) at signing, luckily i know THAT sign very well :P

I'm 80% deaf myself. I can barely hear out of my left ear and my right ear is about 60% gone. Not completely deaf, but I'm pretty close^^;.
