Random Thoughts.....What are you thinking?
By Jetackuu 2012-10-23 22:41:05
I dunno, Norton 360 works pretty damn good for me. Nothing malicious in over a year. I had Trend Micro on my old computer, but I got hit with this crazy thing... what was it called again? I can't remember, but it was like a super trojan of sorts that gets in your boot files, and it also invades your system restore files. In fact, it pretty much weaseled its way onto everything important to starting the computer and for uninstalling aaaaand it killed access to the internet. Anyway, long story short, it corrupted my Trend Micro, which I still don't fully understand, so I installed Norton 360 after basically purging my entire hard drive and using the window's OS disk reinstall thingie... I'd be more cohesive in my computer lingo an verbage, but it's late and I don't care. Point is this, I don't think Norton 360 is necessarily better than any other Antivirus program, though it is really good imo, but generally when the common person gets a bad virus, regardless of antivirus program, they haven't a clue as to what said virus is doing or how to fix it.
Really, if you're going around and torrenting stuff and doing other crazy ***you're going to eventually run into something that your antivirus can't handle or won't detect. THat's just the way it is, so just get a decent antivirus, Norton's is fine now(it just has a biase and stigma against it) and stay away from crazy ***like torrenting.
torrenting isn't crazy, I do it more now than I have in years and I haven't seen a virus on my own machine in 4+ years, basically when I stopped using IE.
Norton is crap, and na I'd put money on me not seeing a virus on my main machine.
edit: and the word you're looking for is a rootkit, and it sounds like you should start looking at your porn in a Virtual machine, so you don't infect your main OS.

I dunno, Norton 360 works pretty damn good for me. Nothing malicious in over a year. Just saying, AVsoftware doesn't prevent you from getting an infection perse. Active scanners can catch something before it does harm, and manual scanners pick up what active scanners have left behind.
If you've got nothing on either scanner type it's either undetected, or you haven't picked anything it. AVsoftware doesn't inoculate you.

stop torrenting? Surely you jest! Next you're going to tell me to stop streaming porn!
The last virus I had was a couple weeks ago when i was trying out Internet Explorer 9.. because I was curious.. 3 days into using it and I got hit. Was kind of funny. I've never had a virus while using my free AV setup and firefox.

Dropping off curbs a lot? The only time I got snakebites in my tubes was when I was doing that on campus.
EDIT: nevermind, that's the outside of the tire

And actually I've gotten free subscriptions for paid products and often preferred the less bloated alternatives anyway.
Sorry to hear that tiger.

I've been using Symantec Endpoint Protection for our home network for almost 2 years now and I couldn't imagine using anything else. It's a coke vs pepsi type of deal... or whatever is trendy to the nerds at the time. It used to be Node32 for awhile and now it's avast it looks like.

Get the solid tube tires? Solves your problems. They're about x3 expensive, so would just be breaking even now with the third tire I just ripped, but don't have enough to buy one up front right now anyways, breaking into food money just to replace this one here.

The products change over time though, and there are objective tests to see which ones are performing better.

firefox+adblock+noscript, can't beat it, unless you also have a mega firewall.
also: porn in a vm = golden.

Haha I love them. I've got an AV, a supplementary AV, and AS software running live. An additional firewall/oswall program running live. 2 manual malware scanners. passive blocks on bad ips, urls, and dns, both my browsers locked under EMET, and a program that tracks what patches what I need. Probably missing something too.
And yet still probably the most valuable apps I have are noscript and adblock plugins.

I've been using a combination of Ad-Aware, AVG, and MSE for about four years now and have yet to have a virus get through. Sure some have been picked up when I go to open a sketchy site, but I've yet to be actually infected. For awhile I dropped AVG and tried out Avast and it didn't pick up anything either, but ended up going back to AVG because I was simply more used to its interface.
Oh, I also use AdBlock and NoScript (love commercial/ad free Pandora).
By Jetackuu 2012-10-23 23:17:07
yeah that's way overboard imo, but I guess.
I'd mostly worry about the firewall portions, and blocking known bad IP's.
I probably should run spybot w/ immunize but I'm lazy.
adblock and noscript make it great, unfortunately noscript is "too hard" or annoying for most people to use, or to even know which ones to whitelist...

I don't like how they commercialized ad-aware, I've pretty much dropped it off my list for now.

yeah that's way overboard imo, but I guess. It probably is but I've got it balanced so I'm not experiencing much slowdown from it. The supplementary scanner alerts me all the time on false positives, and hasn't picked up anything legitimate yet, but since its mostly during patch installation and I know what it's pointing to, i haven't had a problem.

I consider them 900lb gorillas. They take up so many system resources. But that's just me personally. I know some people that swear by them. I just don't find that I need them. All I have to say about antivirus programs is that an ounce of prevention will save you a pound of cure. I am very careful about what websites I go to and most small things I may run into, Windows can take care of it.
Funny some what related story: One time in my high school PC class, a friend and I installed Norton and McCaffe and had them scan eachother and the pc. That computer kerploded. Good times my freshman year! xD

Also, my Leo doesn't have a physical shield; if it ain't in the picture, it doesn't have it. :I
But, G-Bits, eh? You mean those Newtype-use remote mobile suits? Looks like my NT-D won't be going to waste after all. >:3

You're still going to inevitably hit something that your browser can't block though, which is why AM is important. With all this ***running, I'm using 67% of my physical mem, and the top three things using resources are firefox, a manual scan I initiated, and wexplorer.
Also: You shouldn't run two AV products actively at the same time, they can and do interfere with each other, which is why the computer blew up ;p

OMG, LET ME TELL YOU HOW YOU MISSED THE BIGGEST SCREAM FEST EVER BY ME..I WISH I VIDEO RECORDED MYSELF.
HERE I AM AT HOME, JUST GOT HOME LATE FROM WORK BECAUSE IM PISSED THEY SENT US 4 NEW ER ADMISSIONS IN 2 HOURS..3 OF THE 4 ARRIVE *enoughcapslock* between 10-10:45 and shiftchange is at 10:45..so I'm doing all this paperwork..and its ridiculous.
so ofcourse when I get home my first thought it "let me leave a vague facebook status about my workangst!" and POOF in my peripheral vision I see the biggest house centipede I've ever seen darting out from above my bed...I just about had a panic attack..and I didn't know whether to grab it with tissue or smoosh it but I didn't want it to run away..so I smooshed it with my work shoes..and it not only made horrible crushing noises but it insect-bled all over my wall. If it is large enough to have a circulatory system it is too effing big! I am moving back to New Mexico where all they have are creepy transluscent crickets and rolleypolleys (ignoring the one transluscent scorpion I saw)..they don't have aliens!

omgYAY! Finally I got a merciful cape! I went up on thf and farmed so many HQ Angel organs I didn't even think I had room for them all, I used them ALL (except 3, well 4 technically we got another one tonight clearing rooms) popping with 3 every time, and it took weeks but finally I got one!
I don't even care that embrava is not going to be glorious anymore ^^ After so long of trying I wasn't going to give up!
I am just ever so pleased with myself at the moment. And with my poor husband, who I had to drag up there by his heels when he really didn't want to fight things to tank three mobs at a time while I stood around with my thumb in my ear hoping for the best. ^^ Gosh that poor guy rocks it.

You must not be in hawaii. Out here our centipedes are huge, poisonous and everything proof. If you would have tried that crap on of of these it probably would have snatched your work shoe out of your hand and slapped you with it.

And tarantula flies! Those darn things used to fly around my house in Elephant Butte and my brother would chase them and hit them with tennis raquets. :x
Docile, my ***. Evil creatures I say! Evil!
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
