The first time I actually saw it happen was when we were driving through Willamena, Arakansas when we were traveling back from a canoe trip. Gorgeous chocolate lab that looked relatively young. I saw the people just simply drive off. It took a few minutes to register that the owners weren't coming back. There are BEARS, COUGARS, and BOBCATS in those woods! There was no way in Hell that young lab would have survived!
My BF and I snatched up that sweet, little lab and took him to the ASPCA when we got back to Dallas. I'll never understand why people will just abandon animals when there are rescues, the ASPCA, and shelters. I dunno about all towns but around here, taking an animal to a shelter is a death sentence, straight up.. The people at the pound (off the record of course) will even tell you so, as I've had them do a few times when we'd take animals up there.. Almost none of those animals ever see a home, and they don't have long..
It seems like most people seem to think that once you drop an animal off at the shelter or pound or what have you that it's just all safe and fine now.. They'll just be cared for until they find a home or die a natural death, most likely at the end of their long natural life (at least in this city, and this can't be the only one where this is true..) nothing could be further from the truth.. There's only so much space and so many unwanted animals to house, they're treated like inventory, with an expiration date, that date is gone, doesn't matter how good they look, how cute, how much they whine or beg or howl.. They're killed so another unwanted animal can simply occupy the space.
Whole cycle repeats..
Understandable. Around here we have No-Kill shelters, but I know that's not the case for the rest of the state. I feel bad for rural areas where people give up livestock that they can't afford. It seems like shelters only survive on a little state funding and donations.

I guess hockey would be seen as new if your states only got a team in the 90's. The Mighty Ducks saw to that. Slapshot was a better movie >:

I guess hockey would be seen as new if your states only got a team in the 90's. When I say new, I'm not talking about 10-20 years.. Football and baseball have been around as a national sport since around the time of our grandparents birth, even earlier..
Soccer and hockey still have another 30 or so years before they're held up with the same love/admiration that football/baseball/basketball is held up with (of course I mean in the US, just in case that is somehow misunderstood <_<;;)
I don't like ANY sports, but I can name a bunch of teams off the top of my head of any of those three 'American' sports.. I can't even name one damn soccer team, and I barely know a single hockey team (all I remember is the symbol, a P, I don't even have a damn clue who they are).. I don't know the name of a single soccer player.. I know Wayne Gretzky.. Go to the other three sports and same story, I can name countless players that I don't even know who the *** they are..
That because hockey and soccer just aren't 'American pastimes'.

Valefor.Slipispsycho said: »Valefor.Slipispsycho said: »I don't know them or the history so I can't really say, still seems kinda extreme to me though.. But there's so few 'preferable' outcomes to a situation where a dog is no longer wanted by the family that had it.. If it's already grown, chances are pretty damned good it will never find a loving home.. Then there's really two choices, take it somewhere off in the middle of nowhere and leave it, hope it learns to fend for itself (it probably won't) or take it to the pound or adoption shelter or whatever, where it will probably spend a few months in a small cage before eventually being killed..
Just not a good situation to be in at all... No good can really come of it.
That should not even be an option for any reasonable person. No domestic animal can learn to fend for itself in the wild, leaving a dog to die a slow painful death from starvation, infection, injury and/or eaten alive is the worst form of cruelty, not to mention shirking the responsibility of the animal. At least if it is put down at a pound it will die at in an ethical manner. No option in that situation is an easy one.. However I'd be quick to warn to you about judging people who see mother nature taking it's course opposed to man made death as the easier of the two.. I mean that whole argument can be flipped easily, and show how anyone who puts a dog to sleep is nothing more than a murderer.. Just because you ~think~ the drugs make it painless and quick and that the animal doesn't suffer, doesn't mean it doesn't...
I tend to lean towards mother nature taking it's course opposed to just deciding "yep, he's just gonna have to die, it's too inconvenient/expensive for me for him to live".. The only time I really see putting down an animal as humane is in the same circumstances I'd see putting a person down as huamne.. When there's pretty much 0 chance of recovery, but the death is likely to be extended and painful.
That's true, that's true indeed, however I don't think it's fair to apply it to domesticated animals, my argument focusing on dogs because domesticated cats still hunt rodents and birds so they still practice their natural predatory habits even if it is just for amusement. There is a world of difference between a wild dog and a domesticated dog, wild dogs are taught to hunt and how to fend for themselves by parents and packs, not to mention they are genetically much more able physically than domestic dogs. Even if a domestic dog had the intelligence to hunt itself it would be unlikely to have the speed and stamina required, most likely would curl up frightened to death and die slowly.

spoilered for long, details about the last part of a dream i had last night i had a really weird dream right before i woke up. it was actually a series of dreams that linked together, but the last part was i was at a cottage on a cliff overlooking a pristine beach in denmark, and then i turned and walked through a little hole cut in the brush of a jungle behind the cottage.
the jungle was only like 2 feet wide though, so i exited on the other side and then the dream changed to where i was in a new zone of ffxiv, but it was like reality. the area i entered at kinda looked like that northern part of west saruta the leads to giddeus.
there was a path that came from the left and went past me, then curved and went straight ahead of me. and where i had exited the jungle there were really tall trees that had leaves patterned in a way that made them look like they were wearing skirts: small green leaves followed by some bluish medium sized leaves, and on the bottom there were large red leaves.
anyways, i went to the left and it lead to a large plain with a path going north-south, with fenced off pastures to the left of the path. along the path there were little animals with some aggressive black rodents with sharp teeth.
i start walking north and looking around, and then i aggro one of the rodents so i start running south, and i'm running pretty fast and suddenly i see a polar bear not far in the distance. it sees me running to it, which startles it and makes it angry, so it starts charging at me. i change directions and start running back north.
I try to pull up my menu to return but i'm having a hard time doing that and running away at the same time. i try to buy some time by hopping over the fences trying to slow it down but it plows right through them. and then i accidentally select the wrong menu item so i have to close out the menu. by this time the polar bear has made significant ground so i hop some more fences but it doesn't work. then right before it catches up to me i wake up.

Oh I'm not debating that for a second, don't get me wrong.. I understand completely where you're coming from.. It's not an easy choice, there really is no right answer, and I really don't like being put in that situation..
I was just trying to show that wanting to abandon an animal and just hope for the best doesn't necessarily mean someone is unreasonable or uncaring or whatever other tag are often put on those who choose to drop it off in the middle of nowhere rather than pay to have it admitted in a shelter (as Zah pointed out, a lot of them run on basically nothing, instead of taxing, they survive on charging fees)..
In some places, it actually can be the more humane thing to do.. I mean let's be honest here, you're imprisoned, and other than a bit of malnourishment and some lice, you're in perfect health, would you rather have a chance to fight for your survival, or just be injected (as if they're so lucky) and go to sleep and never wake up again?
You'd want the chance to fight.. Other than the odd few, they will all want to fight.. You start drowning you don't just accept it, you fight for your life.

making my music playlist or filling my ipod for a trip takes way way longer than any packing lol
Gotta have perfect music above all, same pants for a week ftw! Music is number one. When I made my last trip to Sierra Vista, I made the mistake of not bringing my CDs, so the entire trip the only things I could listen to were local radio stations. In the same 3 1/2 hour trip, I heard Pink Floyd's "The Wall" like 6 times. I love that song so I'm not really complaining, but yeah... I could have spent that time listening to Mastodon instead.

D: Dang it! Someone posted a job available to type and edit a book for them. I like typing and I'm a decent editor, so I went to apply. Clicked the link, it said I had to have an account on the site. Fine, whatever, make an account. Click next and it tells me I must post my resume before they'll connect me to potential employers. K, sure, makes sense. I give them my resume and they pull up the job, but I can't apply until I have a premium membership with the site which has a mid-range annual fee. Lolnope! Except they already have my email address and resume. ><
I hope my husband can come home and be magical like always and un-email address them and un-resume them. Sneaky ***!

This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
