All this talk reminds me of that *** of my english teacher in highschool.
Final exam, her turn to interview me:
Her: Out of all the authors we studied this year, which one you liked the least?
Me: Keats.
Her: Very well, talk about Keats. *smirks*

Seriously I wanted to smash her face in the desk. *** hated me cause I corrected her all the time, she couldn't speak the language at all.

that sounds like our foreign languages teachers. except spanish, we usually import people to teach spanish =/
My first year spanish teacher in hich school(in LA county) was from washington and pronounced all h's heavilly, and rolled her rs by making the r noise twice. Public schools :/

reading Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. <,< lol

My corgi is named after that! I'm going to be a cliche and admit that my favorite part is the Inferno. The dog's name is Dante Inferno, actually. /blush

I also suggest Lord of the Flies. It's a terribly evil book, but so, so good.

Also, The Turn of the Screw, which was the first book for me to introduce the idea of an unreliable narrator, and Oryx and Crake which has literary quality as well as a truly fascinating story.

I propose that we skip Moby *** because I hate that book. xD And we can read any Shakespeare in the world except Romeo and Juliet because that one is so ridiculously over-taught and I'm bloody sick of it. A Midsummer Night's Dream is so much better. So so so much better!

If we're taking suggestions for poetry, I also suggest the book Kyrie. It's a beautiful, beautiful book of poems.

You probably had to read Steinbeck. Poor Iro! You probably have blocked the trauma of his writing from your mind. Milk and cookies always helps with trauma too. /comfort, comfort.

To kill a mockingbird is a great book. When we read that one, our assignment for every chapter was to pick a character (we had to keep the same character the whole way through) and write a journal from their point of view. I picked Scout of course, because Scout is awesome. <3 That was the funnest book assignment ever. Beowulf was good too. Any of the long epics like the Odyssey or the Iliad were always really good, but I'd get bored part way through and put it down. Then when I picked it back up later I could never remember what I had read previously. :-(

I haven't heard of Across five aprils, I'll have to check that one out!

its pretty good, though its probably not a very high reading level, i was in like 6th grade when i read it, so it seemed like a difficult book.

it takes place in the civil war and revolves around a large family

I don't mind books geared for younger folks. :-) A couple of my favorites are the Harry Potter series, the His Dark Materials trilogy, and The BFG by Roald Dahl. Those are all technically kid's books.

If you like civil war era stuff, then you might like Shades of Gray. That's a good book too.

I just realized that I don't think I had to read a single book for any of my English classes in HS. It's a shame. A lot of people in the class could have benefited from actually opening one.

Edit: I need to read Beowulf sometime. Or finish it I should say.
