Random Thoughts.....What are you thinking?

You all start so late! I've already had two days of classes, and I have to have half of Beowulf finished by tomorrow. Shoulda been a boss and read it(was forced into it really) in HS. I've never been much of a reader, as fascinating as all of this literature is. I usually dwell on the writing end of the English spectrum. So, with most of these classic titles, I'm playing catch up, although I do love me some Shakespeare. Macbeth = teh awesomezorz.
Also, it's interesting to see just how many references have been taken from Beowulf and used in modern entertainment.
Hrothgar - Skyrim
Grendel - Graendal from WoT
A few others I saw, but I forgot already. lol Well you have to think Beowulf is from old Anglo-Saxon times and was originally written in old English. A language which is very similar to the Northern German languages(Nordic). Long story short Anglo-Saxon England is closer to being Nordic than to being the England most people think of. Oh, absolutely. I saw an example of the old English (which to my surprise, wasn't what we normally refer to as old English with your thous and thys, etc) and to me with all the accent marks and "Y"s everywhere, I actually assumed it was more on par with Gaelic. I'd like to know how they got from there to the English we have now. Like, was it an insurgency of Latin from the Romans, perhaps influences elsewhere like Italy or Spain? After all, the English we have now is pretty bastardized.

The bastardized language we call English today is from the infusion of Latin from the Roman Empire into the Germanic based Old English. Thus you get a hybrid Latin-Germanic based language.

Same. Senior AP English? That was an easy dual credit class. Yep.
But I didn't take the Exam.
My essay writing was bleh. Didn't even take English 101 when I was at Uni so I'm taking it now.
Will you need to take an ancient literature class for your BA His? I had to. I ended up really enjoying it. We read 'Gilgamesh', 'Electra', 'Thyrmopolae'(SP?), etc. We also delved into many passages from the Old Testement.

Yeah! My God! My German cousin, Margarete,went into the tourist industry after doing Hotel Management. She's twenty-five and makes great money in Switzerland! French and German(but the latter is really bad atm, not speaking a language in years really hurts). Was also studying Japanese as fifth language, but meh, got bored of it.
@Uri: well I don't know about Hawaii, but I've actually thought about gtfo to another country.

@Uri: well I don't know about Hawaii, but I've actually thought about gtfo to another country. Hawaii is as close as you can get to living in Asia without leaving the US. Oh and the weather is 23-29c year round.

Understandable. My German has gone to ***lately. Spanish is more useful here. That's probably the one I use the most, other than ENG.
If you have credits at a university in Italy you could always do a international transfer. There was a Japanese guy in my BF's frat who came here. He's in Cali now.
