Well, this is aggrivating to say the least. I come in this morning and first thing on the agenda is that i have to write a Memo outlining why i need to order a tool kit for a new work center that is being made. Well that's all fine and good, i mean they have to know right? wait, didnt i already write up a Sole Source document saying the EXACT SAME THING?!?!?! Apparently, our wonderful bureaucracy requires you to put down, on paper, the same thing 5 different times in 20 dirrent ways and wordings in order to get something that is required. Never mind the people requiring this documentation are the SAME DAMN PEOPLE ORDERING US TO BUILD THE WORK CENTER!!!! So i have to jump through all these hoops to get funding for things that we need and yet every year around June-July they order thousands of dollars worth of new furniture and tv's and ***because they "have" to spend the money in that budget or else they dont get as big a budget next year........

TLDR: i *** hate supply and the military bureaucracy

Ugh. Yeah, this is partially the problem with education. I'm sure you've heard about people spending less and less on our education, but the quality of teaching is deteriorating quickly. Thanks to new curriculum being implemented and the No Child Left Behind act, schools are focusing less on what and how the students are learning as designated by their teachers and instead emphasizing this need to "teach to the test." Because teachers are now being held completely responsible for their students, many are abandoning traditional teaching strategies and instead are simply prepping their students for taking the standardized tests. With the Common Core curriculum currently being spread nationwide, teachers are now being held more accountable, and are in fact being policed in a manner of speaking. In order to teach a lesson, we need to create a lesson plan that goes hand in hand with the CC standards. Well, our standards are all focused on certain aspects that are taking away the students' abilities for abstract thought and instead are pushing exposition. You should look at the Common Core curriculum at some point; it's a simple Google search. The standards I have to teach these students are unbelievable. There's nothing about poetry or multiple genres of writing. Their job is to read a text, pull out some quotes and explain why the author put them there. We're turning our students into machines, essentially. So, in regards to not knowing these things, I'm not surprised. Her teachers may not have felt that was as important as teaching her how to take her test. After all, it is their *** on the line.

It may also have something to do with students, too. Thanks to easy access to the internet, students are finding lessons to be less and less pertinent to their world. Why learn something in class when you can Google it and have it figured out in seconds? I know when I was a student, even as a slacker I retained some information. However, when teaching a class the basics of what a Shakespearean genre meant vs. what we think of them today (Comedy, Tragedy, History), I was constantly pounding this concept in their heads and throughout the 50 minute lesson I was constantly having them refer back to the board to find the difference. After class was over, I had them do an "exit slip" (a quick 1 to 2 sentence slip of paper describing what they learned) and more than half of the class still thought comedies according to Shakespeare were supposed to be funny. So, I feel like the blame is split fairly closely down the middle.

I know you did. I don't understand why either, seeing how much you complain about it. Must be one of those love/hate things.

Between the crap in the government (US Gov), the military bs, the quality of students/teachers as Mag is pointing out, i am really wishing i had just taken up my friends idea. He suggested i quit the US Military when my contract is up and just join the Australian military. It is super tempting now but i am locked in to my job for another 5 years now. At least my next command is a ship where a little more common sense is used.

Congrats to her, but huh? Is she going to teach Pre-K or sub? I thought most states require a minimum of a bachelors with a certification?

Love: the sense of serving my country, doing my part. Accomplishment i feel when i get home after doing alot of work (Rebuilding a pump, fixing a system or two, ect). The places i get to go. The adventure.

Hate: the bureaucracy, the lack of common sense to the point of common sense being near outlawed.
