Anyways, sorry for ranting. For the tl;dr folks: I'm nostalgic.
I feel ya. It's been interesting watching the series grow from the first game, to say the least.
That's what I love about FFXI, it has so many references to FF1(jobs, enemies, etc).
I feel this trend of FFs is part of the reason for FFXIV's failure aside from it's ridiculously premature release.
If you have the mentality of milking successful franchises, you can't really afford to make an MMO where the key is having a vast and greater singular stand-alone franchise. It is not something you can spread thin like butter, it has to be a paramount so to speak that people can delve into for years and not get bored of. Let alone a single player game that can be completed in several days, only to get several knock offs made thereafter.
See, part of the reason I loved Final Fantasy of almost every kind was the fact that each had their own sense of identity. I didn't have to worry about which one I picked up first, or which order I played them in. Each had their own separate account of worlds, characters, lore, music, environments, stories, etc.
Sure there were plenty of cute allusions which only gave the games their own charm: moogles, chocobos, mini-games, biggs/wedge, etc. But for them to deliberately break tradition this rather successful chain to literally milk dry a (semi) successful stand-alone FF to the point where it doesn't even make sense anymore is rather disheartening.
In the beginning I was rather excited to learn of Advent Children, because like many, I absolutely relished FF7, so to see a sequel so to speak in movie form was enough to leave me ecstatic. However, the movie was mediocre, but delivered only shy of my expectations.
However, that wasn't enough. They had to continue milking the franchise by making Dirge of Cerberus, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, etc. etc.
None of which really tickled my fancy since it simply came down to the fact that Square-Enix was trying too hard. It was almost heart breaking to see what was once the most enjoyable and highly acclaimed stand alone FFs become victim to half-assed knockoff syndrome. I no longer became interested because it became blatantly apparent that SE no longer strived for excellence in constant fresh and consistent creativity which I followed religiously, but rather looks at sales records and wonders what else they can do with the same setup.
I hope I don't sound like some sort of "veteran" or "elitest" SE follower, but considering I've been a die-hard fan since Chrono Trigger, I believe I have every right to at least make reasonable observations to the trend, and in some ways the descent in quality when it comes to their new games. They have simply become nothing more than fast paced, high octane, balls to wall, hot chicks with gunblades eye candy with no worthwhile substance therein.
Several hours into XIII was more than enough to know I wouldn't like it. However, I am still going to continue since it's an interesting turn to see this "holocaust" scenario rather than your typical whimsical villian, save the world and get the girl formula which worked so well in the past.
Anyways, sorry for ranting. For the tl;dr folks: I'm nostalgic.
I don't want to spoil anything, but 13 will get more interesting half-way in. It starts getting to the nitty-gritty behind the whole pulse l'cie persecution.
Didn't feel like making quote editing for Quet, but I have no doubts it will, but I simply didn't appreciate the fact that the game plays in a straight line for 75% of the game, and that your "shopping" is done online rather than through separate towns with their own identity and side stories. I also didn't appreciate the ridiculously dexterous and agile angsty heroine and gunblade thing.
You have no idea how refreshing it was to go from playing 7 and 8 to 9 and not have an emo *** for a protagonist. And don't get me started on the gunblade.
Argh, bitterness settling in. Better shut up now ._.
Yes, the game devs said light was meant to be almost an exact female version of cloud.
Doesn't make her any less attractive.
She is hot(and Cloud looks like a woman), I'll give ya that. When I first played XIII, I had no prior knowledge of the comparison. 5 minutes in, the first thing I thought was "wow, they just took Cloud and made him a woman. Yay."

Lightning isn't as emo as Cloud, you take that back.

Nope, she puts up a front of being a tough girl to hide her inner angst and depression of circumstances of dire concern within the storyline. Gee, that doesn't sound familiar at all.
As you can since since it is such a big hard fight you'll have to work your way back up from the beginning as to get used to it and make it not such a pain. and honestly that conversation is borderline wrong lmao.

Given my limited viewing of the game, I stand by what I said. Story even started on a train... *raspberries*

She is concerned but she isn't half as bad as cloud. similar yes but i said not as emo.
I loved 7 but cloud was emo lol.

Cocoon had a few places where they could be considered "towns," or "districts," but as a whole it was Cocoon. They just had no names. Sure, it does kind of suck the game forces you a bit to just keep going in a line, but the game just seems more atmospheric than characteristic- the game's areas gave more detail to the plot and story. I guess that's what drew me in to begin with- the whole universe of the game is something out of the ordinary. Instead of just one world, it was interchanging between two separate worlds. Who knows if space exists there?
You'll like Gran Pulse and the marks system by the time you get there though. You could consider each mark to have their tiny story of their own, after becoming c'ieth stones.
As for Lightning, she is just more frustrated and snide with everything going on around her by the time Serah turned to Crystal, but ultimately tries to reconcile with herself, Serah and Snow about failing to protect her. I really wouldn't consider that being emo. If you want emo, I would say Cecil despaired more as a Dark Knight more often than Cloud (read: identity crisis) or Lightning were emo. It was just that obvious.

I think I remember which one it was.
Skytank?
Or something like that, it had turrets and *** :x
Ahhh outside Hopes house?
I think :x I can't remember, all I know is ... um ... nothing :x
I know you have to rely heavily on protecting your *** and dealing damage when your not healing.

it's all about building stagger. full tank. healers/buffs. maintaining stagger builduing. and that big stagger rape commando mode.

Ah yeah, forgot about that also, I remember now that that was basically the only time to get massive damage output.

Cannot wait for this lol loved the world and story in XIII despite the linearity of it. Lightnings hotness in that armor made up for the shortness of the trailer ^_^
After years of build-up and waiting, Final Fantasy XIII was released to so-so reviews. The game was a disappointment. But, if at first you don't succeed, try again.
Regardless of fan bickering or indifference, the game was a monster hit for Square Enix, moving over six million copies.
The game's developer, Square Enix, is working on Final Fantasy XIII-2, a direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII.
The number of Final Fantasy games can be confusing for non-fans. Each of the games do not follow sequential order, so when Square Enix wants to do a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, the game does not end up being Final Fantasy XIV (which is a totally different, already released game), but Final Fantasy XIII-2.
There is a precedent for this as Square Enix released a sequel to Final Fantasy X in 2003 called Final Fantasy X-2. The sequel followed the exploits of Final Fantasy X heroine Yuna, and Final Fantasy XIII is expected to do the same.
Square Enix has only unveiled the game's logo, which showed Final Fantasy XIII heroine Lightning as well as a new, unnamed character. It is thought that this character is Lightning's rival.
Unlike Final Fantasy XIII, which caused controversy by originally only being slated for the PS3, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is penciled in for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, right off the bat. The game won't have the wait that Final Fantasy XIII did. According to Square Enix, it will be released in 2011.
So... yeah... Wasn't a huge fan of XIII maybe they'll do this better? lol.
