Imo the first game was perfect , yes the story wasn't as complicated & deep as FFX , but gameplay wise ; cutscenes ; graphics & battle system was superb . I don't care how linear it was , the story was good enough to justify it , looking forward this sequel. hope they release versus XIII this year too.
i agree. Many of the FF games had such indepth or long *** side quests/missions, their were tiems you forgot what you were supposed to be doing anyway lol.
So i had hoped for a extremly linear game jsut to see what it would be like. As did many others. FF13 gave us that experence and answer. Weather you liked it or not is a personal choise, but we all know now what its like.
from an audio/videophile perspective the ps3 will always win but you are right there are occasional frame rate dips.
I liked 13 but the story was extremely linear. The battle system was amazing and the story was one of the best yet. The story is what made this extremely linear game very very playable. ill play 13-2 and since i have no idea wtf SE is thinking these days, im just going to sit back and wait and give up speculating. its useless

Umm not just the story, bro. The gameplay.. i felt like I was in a decorated hallway the whole game. After 30 hours, i traded it in to gamestop... it was literally 3 days after the game came out... Gamestop already had like 10 used copies turned back in.
Most of the extra stuff was all endgame. But of course, give a game 30min of playtime and you'll never find that out.
Yeah if you rushed the story and didn't care to do the marks and just said *** it after you finished you would have missed a LOT of extra content. But honestly I'd rather play a short Linear action packed always moving keeping me interested RPG than one like 8 that may have a lot of content but was so boring and slow paced.

Shouldn't have to play a game for 30 hours before it starts to get interesting. Hell, I didn't even make it 2 hours before I turned it off for good.

I personally liked the beginning of 13. Complete and total chaos. It was fast paced and exciting, much like 7's first scene was. Going 2 hours and saying *** this is rather meh IMO. hell some games take 2 hours to finish the tutorial. But then again the first 4 chapters of FFXIII are tutorials for working with the battle/job system in combat.
The tutorials actually go up to i think it was chapter 7 or 8 where you get to use sentenals for the first time baring the 30min where you have snow after getting classes and the shiva fight.

I tried, I really did. But damn, I wanted to punch almost every character, and the dialogue was like nails on a chalk board.
"Heroes don't need a plan!"
Neither does SE, apparently.
I will say my wife picked it up and at least got further than I did before she gave up on it. She got about 4 or 5 hours in before saying "screw this."

Since spoken dialogues were actually put into CS....when was the last time SE actually had good conversations.
I heard Vanille and Lightning get a lesbian sex scene
Will buy for this reason alone.
What vanille is cheating on fang now? a threesome would sell better :P (I still can't beleave how loud i laughed when van and fang were reunited and vanille grabed her boobs)

Yeah.
But those are also the shortest chapers in the game also.
Best way to put it.
Xbox disc 1 = tutorial 2/3 = game stuffs.

I felt awkward during long battles. Enemies always attacked Vanille IT WAS LIKE PR0N.

lol if you paid for the game.
guess we can't all have long enough attention spans to play games without shootan/beatemup!
do you do the same with movies?

I do that with songs. If the intro is more than 15 seconds I hit the next button.

I do have to say I do the same depending on the song.
Some get a FAST FORWARD.

Maybe it just shows my age, and maybe the game wasn't aimed at my demographic, since I started playing FF games with the very first one on the NES during summer of '91. I followed the series all the way up to FF VII, at which point it really lost me. I adored every titled up to that point though. I've run through FF IV and VI at least 10 times each. The dialogues in the early titles were a lot more less cheesy(though chock full of bad translastions and broken engrish).

Haha, I see your point, but if a movie was still boring 2 hours in then yeah, I wouldn't finish it.
For the record, I've played video game RPGs for over 20 years. Ultima Exodus on NES was more ineresting than FFXIII, it certainly gave the player more choices.

i think you just have your expectations set too high :P
i thought there was a pretty decent amount of choices.
eye of the beholder...etc
i love the classics, and i get what you're saying about this game...but is it really any more boring than the current standard nowadays?
C'mon, characters had charisma at least , how many female characters in FF had strong personality/careless like Lightning ?
I can count 1 or 2 , & overall the chemistry between characters was so good , even Hope (who I hated at first glance) turned to develop with the story , all characters well-evolved , you can't hate any !
regardless how cheesy the conversation were at some points , characters were that good to the degree I didn't care , also lolNA version ;/ , play JP version if you understand , much better dialogs .

i thought all the characters were pretty generic anime characters :/
but maybe that's because i've seen it(in anime/film..etc) so much that i am actually able to discern such things?
hope can suck a *** with his poor typecast.
so can snow.
RPG's are changing I'd say as technology advances the deves have this lust to do new and more adventurous things than click attack or summon etc.
But that's all it felt like you could do in FFXIII, ironically. You had no control over the outcome of the story, choices your character makes, nothing. Click 2 buttons and watch a 30 minute cut scene. I did read that SE tried to do something different this time around, since western RPG were kicking their butts(Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc). I just didn't think they were going to take the one great thing all those games have in common and toss it(choices that mattered, different paths, etc).
I apologize if my tone is overly aggressive. If someone genuinely enjoyed the game, then my hat's off to you. Yes, my standards were pretty high; It's FINAL FANTASY, I was expecting quite a bit.
That being said, I'll give XIII-2 a try. Maybe it'll be different. But if it's anotehr round of 3/4 of the game being a tutorial or just hit "auto-battle", then I'm going to pass.

This. Hope is often seen as the most hated...but in so circumstance do I blame him for reacting the way he did. He is only a child and he reacted in a way many humans would. It's like people expect everyone to be a super here...but they aren't they are mearly human.
Also it seems as though since 7ish the dialogues in ff were meh at best. the story and the over all depth of the game isnt damaged... just a little hard on the ears at time.
I was always curious what happened after the fall of Orphan and Cocoon, and now after seeing this trailer, the new guy Lightning is fighting. Hopefully we see the original cast again (though Vanille and Fang might still be in Crystal Stasis).

I never played it but, If it had the same ending, then non-linearity is still linear imo. Either that or I'm not getting what you mean by "choices."

I agree with most of this, but I thought the NA version had good moments, not having played the JP version. Ali Hillis and Reno Wilson are great actors.
After years of build-up and waiting, Final Fantasy XIII was released to so-so reviews. The game was a disappointment. But, if at first you don't succeed, try again.
Regardless of fan bickering or indifference, the game was a monster hit for Square Enix, moving over six million copies.
The game's developer, Square Enix, is working on Final Fantasy XIII-2, a direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII.
The number of Final Fantasy games can be confusing for non-fans. Each of the games do not follow sequential order, so when Square Enix wants to do a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, the game does not end up being Final Fantasy XIV (which is a totally different, already released game), but Final Fantasy XIII-2.
There is a precedent for this as Square Enix released a sequel to Final Fantasy X in 2003 called Final Fantasy X-2. The sequel followed the exploits of Final Fantasy X heroine Yuna, and Final Fantasy XIII is expected to do the same.
Square Enix has only unveiled the game's logo, which showed Final Fantasy XIII heroine Lightning as well as a new, unnamed character. It is thought that this character is Lightning's rival.
Unlike Final Fantasy XIII, which caused controversy by originally only being slated for the PS3, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is penciled in for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, right off the bat. The game won't have the wait that Final Fantasy XIII did. According to Square Enix, it will be released in 2011.
So... yeah... Wasn't a huge fan of XIII maybe they'll do this better? lol.
