I rent an apartment in a sort of Garden Style Apartment complex. It has controlled access to buildings, and most buildings are 3 storys tall, some are 4, property has about 990 units. I park in a reserved spot I do pay extra for and there are several concrete pads near the parking lot for motorcycles to park. I parked my motorcycle there. So did 5 others. Two more cruisers and 3 Sport crotch rocket bikes.

Last May, on a Saturday morning, I got a call at 5 am from my local Police Department. Asked me if I was the owner of the Yamaha. Said I was and asked to speak to me at my door. Me being the good citizen, of course went to the door to speak to the police, confused why they asked about my motorcycle. I opened the door with chain first, figured they looked real enough to be cops, and I spoke with them.

They told me motorcycles had just been stolen a few hours ago, and a neighbor saw them load motorcycles up into a van and take off. My motorcycle and another cruiser were left. I was in complete shock, worried about my baby. They asked if I knew the other owners, I didn't. They left me their card and said if I hear anything let them know and then they left.

I quickly got dressed and went over the the bike pad, a block down, to check my bike. It was indeed still there, so was the other cruiser. As I was walking back, the neighbor who called the police was on a balcony, and he called out to me. WE talked about what he saw. He said 4 dudes in two vehicles picked up motorcycles and loaded them up into the van. He mentioned that they had touched mine but weren't able to lift it up, then got others and loaded the truck full and took off quickly.

I thanked the neighbor and left. I started thinking of ways to secure my bike, like a floor mounted lock or something. I spoke with the rental office about this all, the thieving of bikes and any way to protect them, they said nothing they could really do, but said if I had my own reserved parking spot, I could park my bike in front of my car. I thought about it, it wasn't secure but it would make it much more difficult to steal it. Figuring the extra effort to steal it might detour would be scoundrels, i started parking my motorcycle in front of my car.

I also got myself a lock for the front brake lever on my handle bar, as well as a motion sensitive brake disk lock that will make loud high pitched siren chirps if triggered.

I've counted my blessing my bike wasn't stolen that day. I would have been crushed.
