I will give you a concrete example of how LLMs aren't thinking. I'm a programmer, I write code for a living. I had to write some code for some platforms I was unfamiliar with, Linux and iOS. I asked one of these LLMs for some code to get the graphics card names on those platforms and the code it spit out was somewhat functional. However, it used a method I did not want to support, so I asked it to rewrite the code without that method. Instead of writing a new function that would suit my needs, it simply deleted the line in question and spat back the same function, now even less functional than before. Why? Because it was grabbing the majority of that function from websites it was crawling to get that information.

This is basically the concept behind LLMs. This isn't thinking, this is brute force:

I don't think Steam ever displays actual total sales numbers, just their top selling list, which Oblivion is currently perched on top of. It also displays current players and highest current player count, which Oblivion is also doing really well on. #4 on the list (174k) is basically as good as it can get for any game that costs money. Counterstike, DOTA, and PUBG are always the top 3 in these times.

Also have to remember that Steam doesn't represent all PC players, it excludes the Windows Store and all players that are playing the game via GamePass, which I would guess is in the tens of thousands right now. It also excludes console players which...I mean they exist. But that's going to be a much smaller number.

You literally said if you asked it what two flavors combined would taste like, it would have no idea. You claimed it wouldn't know because it "couldn't simulate it". What do you think people do when asked that question? They "simulate it" in their heads. There's whole fields dedicated to the concept. Like the "visualize an apple rotating in your head" exercise.

The point is, when you ask a LLM what the best material for X is, it isn't simulating anything, it's using the dearth of information that was fed into it to get an answer that fits the filter it generated. A lot of times that answer is completely wrong and nonsensical. Why do you think delusions are such an issue with LLMs? It's a glorified sieve. It isn't using judgement because it HAS no judgement. Again, the very basis of how these things are generated is as brute force as it gets. You slam data into the thing until it gives something resembling an answer. That isn't thinking, that's rolling the dice on a sieve till it strains the pasta you want it to strain. Ask it for anything it wasn't brute force trained for and it shits the bed, even if whatever it's being asked is related to what it was trained on.

If you want to learn about ACTUAL AI, please go read up on neural networks and the amazing work being done in that field. We're able to simulate up to insect intelligence if I remember correctly. A chat bot isn't the way to true AI.
