The bolded is a given and goes without saying.
You're also making the exact same "does it matter" argument as Maletaru. Everything should be looked at in the specific context of the discussion. Obviously dealing 500 more damage if you're doing 99999 doesn't matter, lol, the same way as if your movement speed is capped with a low roll Bolters it doesn't matter to Double Up since it won't put you past the cap (though an argument can be made for landing an 11). That example is a irrelevant?
What if a person doesn't care about the look of their character and only cares about Savage Blade damage? You assume a person would only switch races for cosmetics. I mean, that's the most common reason why, but there will surely be someone who swaps for minor stat improvement. To Taru because they want their Bumba clear so bad and they want extra INT for Kaustra (have seen SCHs pop INT potion and wait for the right day before doing Bumbas).

Square Enix seem utterly flabbergasted people still want to play XI, and every year they think everyone is going to leave.
FFXI came out in 2002.
Eve Online (2003) is nearly as old as XI and is still fully supported and no sign of that changing, Everquest (1999) is older and is too, WoW is slightly younger and is still the biggest mmorpg and Lingeage 2 (2003) is still popular. XI still has a lot of paying subscribers in a world where most mmorpgs are f2p, and they still talk about it like its on its last legs constantly.
Square Enix annoy me greatly, they refuse to properly invest in XI because it's "old" and they don't understand that they almost all are.

My money is that the Meriphataud Mountains or Beaucedine Glacier [S] will contain the real one!
With this in mind, are you offering a reward to those who correctly guess first which zone the NM ends up being in? xD
Very cool event and graphic btw

I don't think that's the point, which is why you're struggling to understand some other people's perspective on it. I don't think any of it matters. I don't think being ML50 vs ML10 "matters" for Aminon, Segs, or Odyssey. I have a very reasonable approach to this game (because it is a game and those things don't bring me the same satisfaction as others), so you're not talking to me specifically in trying to help me understand the differences. I get your point, but there's another part of this you're ignoring because it's not valuable to you (which is fine).
To some people, 130 HP is an advantage, perceived or real. I know of tanks who absolutely make sure every set does not have below 3100 HP or whatever. Having the top performance on a parse because they are ML50 is important to them. There's precast-Death sets in guides that keep your max MP high for the difference in a few damage. Countless other examples just like this.
Doesn't matter what you or anyone else thinks, because they get joy out of playing the game like that. People pay billions of gil for MLs just to be the highest level for whatever content they play, even though they clear it with lower MLs already. It's a fantasy game, so they can pretend something matters when it really does not (not trying to get too meta, but none of this ***matters in the end; either everything matters or none of it does). For you to say "an extra 130 HP does not matter" is quite narrow-minded, because then that train never stops. Race Change "doesn't matter" because Plastic Surgeon exists. Or who cares, play in First Person mode, you'll never see yourself. You're already killing Aminon at ML20, getting 20 more levels doesn't matter. People have different goals and things they like to do in the game, is that really a problem? If people want to dial into the granular and get real particular about optimization, I suppose that's their way of getting joy out of a 23 year old video game? Again, not my care, but I can understand others' obsession (whether I agree with it or not).
A ramble anecdote: I used to say that THF using Dynamis dagger in Omen swart farming was a "Waste of gil". I thought that because it costs so much, the amount of swarts you'd have to farm in return was so much, you'd never make your money back. And then I read a comment from someone who said "I don't look at it like that, I use Gandring because it gives me the joy of playing THF". The dagger, in fact, does not matter for farming swarts. And then someone gifted me a Su4 and I saw for myself how fun it was to play THF like that. Does it matter? I mean, my clear times barely increased from 13~min to 12 or so, but that's not the focus. I couldn't actually see how enjoyable a certain aspect of the game was because I was looking at things from a different lens, and I would then judge other's opinions based on that limited lens. I think maybe you're doing the exact same thing in this case because you're looking at it from a certain perspective that doesn't appeal to you, but others may not see it the same way as you.

Auto Regen, while a rather trivial 1 hp/tick, can serve to counter stage 2 Duban's DoT without altering any idle gear.
Sheep song+Healing breeze = Auto Regen. You'll tend to set sheep song anyway, as an enmity spell. And while Healing breeze doesn't have any direct utility anymore, post majesty, setting the spell does add +10 HP.
Trait wise, there's really not much else. The MDB trait was the best trait gained from master levels.
Stinking gas does not inflict Bio. it's just vit down.
Soporific is another 320/320 AoE enmity spell option. Low level, and doesn't require master levels, but overall worse than cold wave. Higher set point cost, mp cost, 90 sec recast. But. also doesn't risk DoT'ing mobs like cold wave.
The Max MP boost I trait adds 10 MP, for 5 set points. If you wanted MP, Sickle slash(Hp-5 MP+15) + Pollen(CHR+2, HP+5) would add +15 MP for the same slot/point cost, with pollen countering the HP-.
Keep in mind, I'm not suggesting a complete spell set here, just going over options.

With that being said, this does bring up an interesting discussion, and I would be interested (for semantics and subjective purposes) in seeing a ratings/tier list for job/race/abilities/ws etc combinations for what is the *optimal* pairing. Do we have any nerds willing to take this on?
[/quote]
so for savage blade specifically
galka has +6 to their base damage (+9 str*.5, +3 mnd*.5)
elvaan has +9.5 (+11 str*.5, +8 mnd*.5)
hume has +4.5 (+6 str*.5, +3 mnd*.5)
mithra has +1.5 (+3 str*.5, 0 mnd)
taru has the base value having the lowest str and mnd.
magic would be a bit different
for purely black magic(int), it's taru(13)>hume/mithra(6)>galka(3)>elvaan(0)
for healing(mnd and vit with mnd having a higher value) elvaan(14)>galka(14)>hume(9)>mithra/taru(0)
for things like red mages, because they utilize both for different things, we'll take an average of int and mnd taru(6.5)>hume(4.5)>elvaan(4)>mirhta/galka(3)
and since we factor HP into the value equation, Mp should also be factored in, increasing the value of taru in every area where MP is utilized.
That's just a couple comparisons and more importantly, you should choose the race you like to play as. will an extra 500 damage on a savage blade really mean that much if you don't like the look of the character you're playing as? And, more importantly, with the damage cap being set at 99999, does that extra damage really matter if you're already hitting that mark in the content you play?

Give me an example of two ringa one with 5-10 stat less than the other and explain why you should not use the higher stat one because 5-10 stat is "negligible".
There aren't any, because that's not how FFXI characters are geared in 2025. This is exactly my point, thank you for bringing it up.

uncapped attack:

This isn't directly a criticism of you specifically, but I've seen people posting screenshots and stuff lately of sets instead of using AH's item set tools and it makes me sad, because I have to guess what the gear is. Obviously I'm veteran enough that I can tell that that first set is using the stinky subligar, but newbies likely aren't. :P

Nothing about this Katana fundamentally changes anything about NIN. You could tank just fine without it before it was widely released (I have Fudo Masamune C and R29 Tsuru, zero issues holding hate on things I did tank as NIN). It's a cool toy, but there's almost no real-game application to having it that would make "content" more clearable than if you didn't have it.
If we're keeping it a full buck, Yagyu Darkblade (while I think it's super cool), is a meme weapon and most noobs will pick it because "hey i can give you shadows!!!" Yall not ready for that conversation though.
|
|
 |
|
So, if ninja A has the cape and boots on, and ninja B casts a yagyu-utsu in the same party, does ninja A get a couple more shadows than the rest of the party normally would?
Yes a lot more shadows. Yagu just gives 1/2/3 shadows to the party for Ich/Ni/San, basically all +shadow effects NIN only and Yagu is -2 shadows to everyone else. It's still a ridiculous amount of enmity to go with a moderate potential reduction in damage.
|
|
 |
|
I doubt it. The Yagyu clearly says Utsusemi -2, and it ignores +Utsusemi gear that you have on yourself for others, so it would be weird if it didn't work on the caster's +Utsusemi pieces to give others extra shadows, but works on another ninja who is wearing +Utsusemi gear to get the extra shadows. You could test it though, but it sounds impractical. I can't think of any situation where you're going to be wearing the feet for the extra shadow, and casting your own San is always going to be better, so that would be an annoyance more than anything.
|
|
 |
|
The amount of people who will successfully be able to tank on Ninja properly will probably be very few. Everything in this game basically is magical-offensive and strips shadows instantly. It's more of a chore thank anything. I have doubts that Ninja tanking will return for most common players.
That's why /RUN is such a powerful sub now, ML's really opened up some options. Buddy of mine tried it out and it worked super well, the problem was that the two "current" content types of Gaol / Sortie have meta's that just do not align with NIN tanking.
MDB III, Valiance and Foil got added to the existing list of nice things to have. Valiance is ridiculously nice to have, -30% SDT reduction to a specific element for you and everyone in your party plus a ridiculous amount of enmity (450CE/900VE per person hit).

What surprises me most is no one else remembers they had colored borders yeah, the bolts and arrows aren't obtainable anymore. Tandem necklace +4 is still necessary to uncap your adventuring fellow though.

Plenty of people have discussions and back and forths about which Adoulin/TVR Ring |is the best|. Which Unity ||. Is switching Unities worth the stat increase on x unm gear. Cheer effects. Is this bonanza weapon BIS offhand for Blue nuking subduction vs Sweetwater Leeches or for Savage Blading Kalunga while your attack is capped but your haste is not capped but you have slightly uncapped acc. Maybe not you, but yes, others do obsess over 5 str in the ring slot, lol.

Ayanmo has 48 dex and 7 DA
I just noticed that going through armor with 40+ DEX. I might start out with this one and see where it goes from there.
I would think the agony would beat the ayanmo in a 1 to 1 swap if you're not already attack capped, but it'll be interesting to see what it looks like stacked up against nyame. Can you post your fb2 set so far?
Yeah I'm trying to balance a few different stats, DEX for the 80% conversion to base damage, Multi-Attack to proc extra hits because this WS kinda relies on those, and +Attack / PDL to hit higher pDiff multipliers. This really needs the python simulator to figure out because of all the different conflicting parameters.

If you have San on and cast Ni, but your party member has no shadows, you have no effect but they get the shadows.
If the party member has their own Ni up (3 shadows) and you cast Ni, it will overwrite their Ni with your Ni (2 shadows).
Seems like it just follows the normal NIN rules: check which instance of Utsusemi each member has up and blocks any lower-tier of Utsusemi from landing.

Didn't the game used to have border colors all the way to +6 at one point for some ammo pieces? From what I recall, tandem necklace goes up to +4, dogbolt to +5, and crude arrow goes all the way to +7.
|
|
 |
|
ok, but why did no one follow up with next question "What color border for +4!?!?!"
Color predictions, go. I call orange!
Color ... color, why not all the colors, rainbow!
But yeah if it's +4 then probably purple.

It's all subjective. I happen to agree with Thorny's point that 100+ HP is actual notable, considering it allows flexibility across sets to not dip HP too low, allowing better options to swap in between for more defense. But I also understand what Maletaru was saying in his opinion, in that it doesn't really matter. (Does dealing 180 more Savage Blade damage or 300 more Kaustra damage really matter?). Either all of it matters or none of it does, and FFXI players have always obsessed over a literal 1 attribute, so I'm not surprised this is coming up.
With that being said, this does bring up an interesting discussion, and I would be interested (for semantics and subjective purposes) in seeing a ratings/tier list for job/race/abilities/ws etc combinations for what is the *optimal* pairing. Do we have any nerds willing to take this on?
Like say for example someone whose main is PLD wants to be the most efficient, and we say VIT/HP/MP are the best stats for a PLD - what would you rank Hume/Galka/Mithra/Taru/Elvaan given those traits? A BLM. A Savage user. Best race with XYZ prime weapon. etc. Do we have spreadsheets that can calculate the (theoretical) best race for each scenario, similar to how we have the All Jobs Gear Sets? Not saying it would be the final say, because situations matter, but we've calculated far more before, so I think it would be an interesting option to explore, since so many players DO actually care about the minor difference in stats (most players are gonna swap for cosmetics, but there will be people who want more "optimization").
