During my lower level monk days, most have advocated dune boots as primary non usukane choice in footwear. Now, it's main competitor is fuma, which people have always gone back and forth.

Now that I understand much more about the game than I did prior, I take back everything I've ever said about advocating dune boots, as fuma are a CLEAR CUT winner.

Some simple concepts that will help w/ this comparison.

A) You aren't kicking too often, dune boots only benefit kicks
B) Fuma benefit ALL of your attacks, including kicks as well (more attack rounds = more total number of kicks as well).
C) Fuma generates more TP, will help WS damage as well since you will ws more often. Dune boots only help your DoT portion. TP'ing in them adds nothing to WS.

Assuming 5 FSTR, capped merits, and destroyers, brutal earring

58 DMG/hit
40 DMG/Kick

2.1 punches/attack round
.15 kicks/attack round

(2.1 x 58) + (.15 x 40) = 127.8 DMG/attack round

Dune Boots, +30 DMG to kicks
(2.1 x 58) + (.15 x 70) = 132.3

132.3/127.8 = 3.5211268% increase in DoT

DoT accounts for 70% of a mnk's dmg where you'll get 30% damage from WS. Wearing Dune Boots during TP give NOTHING during WS, so this number only accounts for 70% of the before given value

3.5211268 x .7 = 2.46478876 ~~~ 2.47% increase in total damage

So, now let's say you have black belt, turban, and haidate, 22% haste, 2 marches, 1 haste = 67% haste
3/(100-70) = 10% increase to DoT and WS frequency (Haste, unlike dune boots DOES apply to all of your damage since it increases your DoT and since you land more hits, you gain more tp and thus ws more times)

10% > 2.47%

Now, I bet you're saying "Zomg I but that's an unrealistic amount of haste"

Ok, 0% haste
Going from 0% haste to fuma
3/(100-3) = 3.09% increase in DoT and WS frequency

3.09 > 2.47

Unless you go purely for DoT and plan to hold tp forever and not ws at all, Dune Boots NEVER win

Dune boots are only for when you are using footwork (which when you are it shouldn't be up for more than 5 seconds anyways)

im no mnk at all but ive heard that you should macro them in for dragon kick as well. If this is true then it would be still relevant for mnks to get them

I've seen this question asked many times, and people have always chosen Dune boots :(. Not to say your math is wrong, but can anyone else check this up for confirmation? It'd be great to be able to give a definitive awnser through math when I'm asked about them.

That portion was covered. The 5 secs you have footwork up is using dragon kick.

^.^ Also, what's the NI ws like for MNK? I don't hear many people speak about it, so I would presume it's not very good?

Yea, it's not the best. It's weird though. On particular mobs its great. Its my primary ws in ISNM puk it consistently does more than any other ws. merits and other things it does much less. For some reason though it makes a comeback on JOL

I just wanted to ask Vegetto, which would be better Dune or Fuma if you don't have a black belt? I do have a black belt, however I did reach 75 before I got one. There are many 75 mnks out there that do not have a black belt, so what would be the better choice of footwear for the lv75 brown belt mnks?

He showed that even if you are going from a 0% haste build (which would favor dune boots the most) fuma still win.

I would pick fuma over dune boots even if I only had brown belt.

Blind is correct, 0% haste, at all, no march no haste spell no haste in gear and fuma still beat dune boots.

Doesn't change the answer. Fumas are better even at 0 Haste unless, as Vegetto said, you plan to never WS. Fumas were quoted as a 2.47% increase in damage and 0->3% Haste is a 3.09% increase in DPS.

For those wondering when Fuma overtake Dune when not WSing, it's if you have at least 12% Haste elsewhere. Black Belt alone is 12%, Brown Belt and Walahra Turban is 13%; "Fuma always win" seems like a fairly reasonable answer here.

Should be fixed to say 3/(100-3) = 3.09%

Denali boots, uncapped acc > dune boots, but fuma are superior to both. Fuma > Enkidu unless your haste build is piss poor.

Usu > Fuma ≥ Enkidu > Denali ≥≤ Dune

keep in mind denali is only good if your acc is uncapped, which puts it at the end there w/ dunes.

Sorry no. You can wear what you want, I don't care, but "so marginal it doesn't really matter" does not apply here. If we're talking 0% haste, yes you are right. If you have any amount of haste whatsoever in gear, haste/march cast on you, then it's a pretty large difference.

Some people enjoy doing the most possible damage.
Nothing wrong with that.
Personally, it takes the fun out of it, but each is to his/her own.

Fuma have always won. You really shouldn't have to think more than a few seconds to figure it out though. I jumped on the Dune boots bandwagon and tried them for about an hour, then promptly threw them in storage. They are next to useless and a waste of time, imo.

I believe the only reason they're so common is because cheaper MNKs (The ones that can't afford the 600k Fumas at LV39) are stuck with Kick Attacks boots from 51-72. At that point, Dune boots seems like a natural upgrade (And from an outside standpoint, getting +30 DMG does SOUND like it would do a lot more than 3% Haste).
