If they're truly that powerful it seems a bit odd that Midgardsormr was defeated by the Agrius
It's different. Firstly, Midgard was not directly defeated by the Agrius, his physical body was petrified by the aetheric explosion caused by both his own attack and the destruction of the Agrius's massive reactor. Midgard himself is still "alive"; his Aether was never returned to the lifestream. This much is apparent when he is capable of manipulating the world around his corpse, speaking with you, and creating himself a new physical vessel (the minion you acquire).
The Wyrmlords have a strength that we cannot possibly measure yet since the only one we've encountered physically is Bahamut, and that was in an immensely weakened state while he was being rebuilt by the Ragnarok. During the Calamity, he managed to level entire settlements and cause untold levels of destruction with no visible fatigue.

if Louisoix hadn't channeled the power of that immense cloud of Aether over Carteneau and invoked the power in the prayers of those fighting below to become the primal Phoenix, Bahamut would have likely never been defeated. It was only through using a staggering, nigh incomprehesibly large amount of concentrated aether that Louisoux's primal form was able to shatter Bahamut's corporeal form.
And even in death, Bahamut's will remained far stronger than any we know of so far. He was able to snatch Louisoix, who at this point was still Phoenix, away from whatever process drags one's aether into the Lifestream and turn him into his thrall.
