A couple of questions come to mind for those who haven't been paying attention to this effort to regulate the internet.

What exactly is "Net Neutrality" and how will it affect our use of the internet on a personal and business level?

This was an interesting read to say the least.

Here's a simplistic video regarding "Net Neutrality".

People have dreamed up an imaginary problem with the internet. They don't know what it is. All they know is they want the Federal government to fix it.

You've never left the US, have you? Travel to East Asia or Europe and look at how many telecoms they have, the prices they charge, and the speed they provide. Unless you live in one of the few markets that has a fiber optic network, US speeds are pitiful.

I can literally pay for the most expensive broadband option in my city, which is something ridiculous like $150/month, and still download data faster on my cell phone. That's because there's no meaningful competition in the telecom industry and the major players have cooperated to keep it that way.

Comcast throttling Netflix was just the first step. Have no doubt it would have gone further.

What is this obsession with Netflix ? I don't get it.

From my experience with it is offers a subpar movie selection compared to on demand.

Well after the comcast-tw merger: comcast will hold the most, Verizon has a hold on VA.

So essentially, most markets there isn't a broadband competitor, you only have one choice. That's a huge part of the problem.

I like having access to the entire The Walking Dead series (except the latest season, of course).

I wouldn't pay 8 bucks a month to watch movies/TV shows *picks up a newspaper* !

Kids these days I don't get them and I don't wanna.

Anyways: I do hope for more competition but you do realize they are going to sue the FCC and this will be battled in court for years.

You've got a lot of jaded angst and anti-subscription frustrations. Come DD for my Legion run tonight and relieve some of that stress.

150USD a month would get you 500/500 here.

Those countries also have better infrastructure when it comes to internet service.

Remember, we have been using telephone lines and still do for internet, and most places outside of the US have either newer lines or fiber optics or not as much area to cover (and can upgrade/replace their lines cheaper because of that) than US.

One of the benefits of treating the internet as a utility, ISPs can now access utility poles/infrastructure to run fiber, instead of having to run their own. (Formerly limited to existing utility companies; like Comcast, Verizon).

Google spread like wildfire, and be our overlords!

I know there's fiber laced thorought the city I live near, I know the electric company has access to it, not sure who else.

Technically fiber has the capacity for unlimited bandwidth (theoretically) but right now has some limiting factors.

I'd probably sooner try it on dialup again. I have played via a cell connection connected to a computer, shared via ICS. The latency should be similar, wasn't too horrible.
