Yeah, putting family down as a reference is a joke unless you worked for said family member in a professional sense.
I mean, if you put them down, you either coached them, they're gonna give some corny glowing review or you screened out anyone who'd talk ***about you. Honestly, many of my former bosses are either pretty horrible to get into contact with (fkn old people) or are idiots who I wouldn't want to put down as a reference. I got some professors who I often jot down on applications or my old stoner boss who uses terms like radical, jiminy cricket, far out and tubular.

the eskimo girl that showed up for work drunk, wrote a check to herself for $100, disappeared for a week and her mom called us up freaking out, who I had to go look for, who dumped all of her work into an empty file cabinet, hid the bank statements so the boss wouldn't learn of her $100 theft, got us to hire her friend for some part time work who also showed up drunk and puked in the bathroom and then left early, hid the second set of bank records the boss requested from the bank and then quit without notice before the third set arrived.... put us down for a reference!

Here, the employer can't expose the reasons behind a firing. They can only confirm that the applicant has worked for them and for what amount of time. :/

I got her all set up in her own little office with a call script and the call list, she didn't even have to sell anything to anybody. we were simply gathering current contact information for a promotion we were going to run later.... are you the person in charge of X? no? well can I talk to them? yes? we would like to send you some information on our newest products, what is your current email address? I picked up the phone, I called the first three people on the list on speakerphone so she could hear it in action, I said "do you have any questions? No? good, I'll come check on you in a little while. few hours later I looked in on her and she was staring at the phone and hadn't moved a muscle or called a single person.... me- ummmmm, it looks like you haven't called anyone.... what seems to be the problem? her- "I can't do it" me- what!? why!? her- "idk I just can't do it"

In duder's defense (in response to some stuff posted previously that I was too lazy to quote but apparently not lazy enough to write out this long narrative describing why I wouldn't quote it), it's very invasive to ask someone to be your reference. I hate doing it, personally. "Hey, could you vouch for me even though I barely know you and we never actually worked together before?" Also, I dunno how it is out in Tejas, but out here, you can't use family as references. That would be soooooooooooo much easier.
I get why references are important, but it doesn't mean that they don't suck.
