I'm pretty sure most of you pronounce the names of certain pieces of gear horribly wrong.

Tiamat is actually a Babylonian myth, not a Japanese one, so I can't say what the original pronunciation was.
The pronunciation guide on wikipedia says "Tee-ah-maht." (Which would be the Japanese reading anyway.)

I have a friend that constantly pronounces everything wrong.
For example, Enmity
He would say "Enmitity"
Dunno where he got that extra syllable.
Also, when I hear someone say Bye-uh-ko or hi-Date I wanna strangle someone.

In the original Japanese it's actually a double-long vowel, so saying "Maht" while holding the 'a' for twice as long is technically correct.
That being said, this is almost always dropped when translating to other languages. "Tokyo," for example, is actually double long on both O's but it's never written that way. Why SquareEnix decided to write out "Maat," and confuse the hell out of all their non-JP players is anyone's guess.
Just say Matt or Maht -- this one one of those things where it's SE's fault and either is good enough.

I was under the impression it was in reference to the Egyptian goddess, which might be why they didn't drop it.

The summarian language is the oldest and first known civilization on our planet so advanced they knew about pluto well before the early 1900s when we discovered it, and also already knew it wasn't big enough to be called a planet. Go figure, we only recently recalled pluto and shortend our number of planets to 8 in our solar system (known as the Sol system fyi)

They're probably referring to how it's written in Japanese, (バストゥーク), which is a pretty ambiguous, non-standard katakana spelling and could arguably be Bastook or Bastok.
Even the Japanese have generally decided screw it, and pronounce and spell it バストーク/Bastok these days.

omg that video of the ENM cracked me up. i didnt even stop to think people didn't know how to pronounce all the different japanese words. hay gun is so awesome!!! and ya, i play the japanese version of the game and still refuse to call bastok bastook. バストゥーク sounds bad in japanese too if you ask me
i also like Aydeewa in japanese. its just eh-ji-wa
