Vent/Skype/Teamspeak are all good programs for voicechatting while on FFXI. And for those of you that say that its pointless... its not. You ever have the situation where you were spamming for a paralyna as a tank and it didn't hit you fast enough. What did that turn into? Probably a wipe. Now, you have to sit there and type it out the first time. If you just could have said Paralyna on a voicechat, if the mages were there, you could have lived and regained your momentum.
Now, I know that sounds extremely stupid, but typing ***out on the game can take longer for some people, especially those that use PS2 or XBox without a keyboard. So that timelapse is huge at major endgame events. As for social uses in this game, that is your personal decision. But for events, it makes things 5000x smoother, especially if you have everyone on the same page.
Now, if I could get on the vent of competing players and hear them get mad when I outclaim them on something, or beat them at something, ect, that'd be worth listening to.
Vent can make events so much more fun, of course that is if you dont have the whole ls on there >.>
We basically keep the info to sackholders or the main people in the event, keeps it easy and fun.....
But that's pretty unfair to the rest of the people in your LS. Being in the same LS you would think they would be treated as any equal member. Only keeping the vent info to sackholders and certain selected members is very disrespectful to the members that don't get to join your wonderful chit-chat.
But... that doesn't have to do anything with vent, that's how LS's roll.
I've also found that events are much easier when the people are on Teamspeak (which is what we use). Not to mention we used it for things talking during ff13 release, as well as for ppl that quit to pop on and see whats new with people in game without having to reinstall.

yo yo im black and after years of oppression we hate being called ***, its racist, yet every other word i say is gonna be *** *** ***

Long stroy short... we forgot killing the ninja Nm pops mobs after defeat...mages stuck on one side dead ppl on the other.
So i decided to kite them away on thf so mages could raise. Somehow i got distracted near the AH and the ppl on vent hear me saying "Ohh f*ck me i just spawned 7 smners and 3 more mnk mobs." All you hear on vent is everyone laughing.

We use Vent for most everything. It helps everyone on communication. You aren't forced to speak on there but I encourage everyone to liten. It is much easier to say "hey I'm paralzyed." on vent than type it out while tanking or w/e You tend to get a faster result when it comes to needing some thing quickly.
I agree that live voice programs can make large group events more enjoyable by decreasing the stress of mass coordination. It really does decrease response time by others when the chat log is scrolling fast. I also agree with another poster that people shouldn't feel obligated to download and use the programs for more casual gaming time.
I tend to prefer Skype over vent for one very silly reason: I hate knowing that I or anyone else is pushing a button when we laugh just to have others know that we're laughing at something. Feels very forced to use push to talk to laugh at a joke. There is probably a way around that feature, I just found it more convenient to use Skype. (I am not saying one program is better than the other- I know there are strong feelings on this topic, I'm simply pointing out a feature I find annoying about Vent).
OP needs to take a walk outside and talk to real people. *** excuse is ***.
Huh, what?
I don't even know anymore.
I do love using Skype though. I love hearing people's reactions to ***I send them. That, and ***'s really nice for getting out orders during missions/fights/etc.
I play FFXI on console so I don't use any sort of voice chat. But if I could you can be sure I would use it for LS events. Heck from what I understand on most other MMO's is almost mandatory for events. I play a lot of FPS's over Xbox. It drives me insane when people try to play a game like Left 4 Dead where communications is vital without a mic. So I can see where the pro voice chat people are coming from.
As for casual chatting while doing solo stuff or exp'ing. Probably not. I tend to listen to music or watch TV when doing stuff like that.
As for the people saying they don't wanna sound like nerds by using a voice chat. You're a nerd, embrace it. You'll feel a lot less nerdy about yourself if you just own up to it and lay it out there for anyone and everyone to see.
As for the people too afraid to shy. I'm genuinely concerned for you. To be so insecure with yourself to where you can't physically speak with people you have talked with in this game for weeks, months, or years is a bit frightening. It suggests a deliberate disconnect, a way to avoid seeing other players as actual people. Thus easier to talk to when they are just made up characters in a video game.

The thing is that with Vent you don't have to hit a button to talk. Some people that play with alot of noise around them have the option to use it. I nomally use the sensitivity feature with vent most the times. I find that with Vent I get a better voice quality than I had with Skype. That might just be me though.
