Everyone here has gay friends. :D I will forever appreciate the posters in this thread as among the most amazing friends I have. For example, I remember way back when I was struggling with coming out and met such an outpouring of support in here - it became one of the pillars that held up my sanity through all the identity questioning and self-discovery that followed. No offense to all my straight friends, but I love the shiiiit out of my gay ones. XD

Anyway, night night everyone.^^

Had a friend in high school who randomly showed up one day wearing a scarf and wouldn't take if off... We managed to pull it off after a bit of effort to reveal his neck, with only 2 or 3 small patches of skin hickey free.

I have this fear of things being around my neck so I don't get to make use of awesome scarves XD

le sigh, my grandma said some stuff to me today that kind of upset me. she keeps thinking being gay is a choice. she still loves and cares for me blah blah but she keeps saying that it's just a phase and she's seen many like it (which is *** imo). i'm apparently just confused and she believes that i'll make the right choice (and be straight) eventually because she doesn't want me to have to deal with the hardships of this lifestyle. i love her and all but, why doesn't anyone understand? i really didn't ask me to this way and i don't think i could change. i mean, i look at guys and it's like whoa, i'm totally gay. i just wish people would understand.

I think it will just take some time for your grandma to let it sink in. She is from an older generation where being gay was waaaaay less acceptable than today, and probably thinks that you have to deal with the same hardships that a gay person would have to deal with when she was growing up. I'm just happy that my family still says they love me, even if they do throw in the "have you found a good girlfriend yet" or "when are you going to get married" comments in every now and then. Bottom line is you have to be happy with your own life, not the life someone else wants you to have.

As we get older it becomes harder and harder for us to learn and accept new things. In your grandmother's case she would have grown up being taught that it was a choice so that beleaf is pritty deep in there. It's just kinda the way nature made us, the important thing is that she still loves you (unless she was lieing but in my expirence old people don't dance around that kind of thing) and best to just put everything else out of mind and care.

Its your grandma so its a bit different, but when I get into this conversation with anyone else I always bring this up to them:

"One morning I chose to be gay. I chose to possibly be ostracized by my peers. I chose to possibly be disowned by my family. I chose to give up some of my basic rights living in this country. I chose to live a life where I don't know if people truly judge me for who I really am. Is that something Is that a choice you would make?"

It might sound simple but it really makes people think. Granted I came out when I was 13 (which was 14 years ago now) and times are different now, but people who feel its a choice just need to open their eyes a little more. Sadly you have people brainwashing others making them believe so. Keep your head up brotha!

The courts are filled with very conservative judges. If you look at the history of the Supreme Court they are packed by very conservative presidents. Very rarely do Liberal Presidents get a choice who enters the court, so its not surprising. It is very sad indeed. To paraphrase there was a black minister in Georgia that said that we should be disemboweled so we didnt have a chance to spread our filth (meaning STDs, HIV, etc) amoung those who carry on "normal" lives."

A reporter then asked him "Do you think that homosexuals should have to go through what your people did to get the basic freedoms afforded to anyone else?"

The minister responded: "Maybe it will teach them."

It is a sickening display but unforunately it is the world we live in and we can only make our voices heard to get the things we need.

I am in the process of getting some of those arguments from my mother.

When I first came out to her she was fine with it, and me. 2 weeks later she was fine with me, not it.

Now (4 weeks or so) She says that I am her son, and will always love me, but I am choosing a lifestyle of sin and evil.

The only way I keep from lashing out, or bursting into angry/sad tears is to think of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hfYJsQAhl0

It seems juvenile, but it helps me to take a step back, and look at things logically. Normally in those situations I would be so emotional that I couldn't look at her arguments in any logical fashion, I would just flail about with words till I calmed down.

This is another example showing that, just because someone reacts one way at first, doesn't mean that their views will stay the same over time. This example happens to be a bad one. But their are good ones too, where parents realize how important their children are and stop fighting. By fighting I mean that parents realize they will be unable to control or change their children's orientation, and start to accept it as a part of their child, not a problem with them.
