By Asura.Eiryl 2026-08-15 09:35:46
I'm not sure how anyone hasn't posted this yet but the set bonuses start at 2 pieces
2 egbesu is 2 refresh
3 egbesu is 3 refresh
4 Egbesu is 4 refresh
5 Egbesu is 5 refresh
Logically, all the sets work the same

Egbesu Bd + Lg gives +2 refresh
Likely +1 per piece with a minimum of two pieces. I dont have a third to test. It could also be +2 refresh per piece after the second, but I doubt that.

Lol that loser still has me blocked what a snowflake
Anyways, Simon, you cherry picked one single piece out of 20.
10 mil is pennies (5 weeks of allowance) and its cheaper on most other servers, but even then, NQ Adhemar would still be better than these pieces.
AF+4, Emp+2 isnt a high baseline. Time spent hunting these NMs and their 15% drop rate (in my experience) doesnt seem worth the squeeze. Perhaps a drive-by on the timed ones could be worthwhile, but spending 20-70 minutes on the lotto NMs may be better served elsewhere, like Sheol (even just Sheol A since thats all they can do, get some important seggies that arent useless to a new player and gil, which is clearly important since 10 mil for Jinxed Bonnet is oh so expensive) or Omen (get some cards and make some gil because again 10 mil for Jinxed Bonnet is sooo expensive). You cant make the argument that “its expensive” then suggest people waste time on this junk when they could be doing some of the most friendly character productive activities. Even Ambu is a very friendly gil activity for the first few thousand HM/GA when you still have the best gil/HM sellables available.

Maybe I misunderstood how this works, because Im taking a break atm to play different games, so can't check it myself. I thought you can go in there, join the alliance, wait for the kill, open box. Isn't that right?
Also even if you would need to do it actively, killing PH or waiting for timed spawn can easily be done while half AFK doing other stuff in RL. Sheol A farming is a full focus 30 minutes dedication event.
EDIT: I cherry picked a cherries for top players. The "even better than Ambuscade" part is true for most of this new gear, if not all.

Its not, I'd say its closer to 15-20%

You want to cherry pick, ok I'll cherry pick too:

Shitted all over. For the fifth time, this obsession with defensive stats is meaningless to a character using bridge gear because nothing they are fighting has the ability to OHKO them at will for not being in 50% DT with 700 MEVA. If they find themselves doing content where they are at this kind of risk, I guarantee that they are likely a pocket buffer job doing nothing because they do not have the offensive capability in equipment to contribute anything meaningful. If anything, they are more likely to be a detriment because they are just feeding extra TP to the mob that has devastating OHKO potential.
And dont forget that for the last two months they had the ability to reforge RSE which absolutely demolishes all 20 of these new items in general (other than the extra unique stat on each piece, which its not even BIS for most jobs)

Other than the DT, they are objectively worse than Ambu +2.
Even just looking at meva, only some pieces have higher meva than ambu.
They're very meh at base. Yeah, SE lied, what else is new.
Whatever fills up wardrobes I guess.
They really should've added DT to the JSE +4 not this stuff.

I encourage you to start new character with no good defensive gear, JPs, merits, master ranks etc. and show me how well you will survive all this Omen, Escha, Shaol, HTBF (on normal), Vagary farming or even just Vagary instanced bosses to unlock AF3 reforge. I was doing 3 new chars from scratch and even when assisted by my 3box, they were dying like flies when I was doing some stuff for them and they were just doing basic things on side. You are remembering this wrong.

I did it one year ago and it wasn't much work to simply unlock sheol gaol and ask someone for a Bumba V1. All defensives stats are there.

If you have someone willing to help you and can plan ahead to make a char 45 days before you start playing then sure.

Could use those first 45 days to do story? Like you aren't immediately burning through ambu gear and ready for sortie.

and ask someone for a Bumba V1. Buying or leeching isn't natural progression, so filler gear has value. If the only reasonable path forward is buying or leeching, the game feels shallow.
I was doing 3 new chars from scratch and even when assisted by my 3box, they were dying like flies when I was doing some stuff for them and they were just doing basic things on side. There's a lot you can do effectively without turtling, but having the option of using a high m.eva/dt set is of immense value to someone starting out. I don't really get why they would make so many of these pieces squishier than RSE while still less offensive than Ambuscade equivalents.
Still, even if it is pointless as a full set, most jobs have 1 or 2 pieces that give substantial DPS upgrades over ambuscade. The WS bodies are the strongest example, but you still have chunks of DA and STP that beat the comparable ambuscade armor. It is bringing back a classical FFXI gameplay loop: you see a piece that'll make your set better then you go out and get it. It's not like you ran full adaman or zenith in zilart or full enkidu or aurum in late-TOAU.
The negativity from people who have zero interest in the starter gameplay loop is just lame. Sure, all 5 pieces don't have value, but some do. They have a future upgrade path. The NMs are scaled reasonably and forgiving for competition. Much like people finishing full sets in the old days, there are probably collectors who will get all of it for something to do. Who cares if they're advancing as fast as they could; it's another activity that captures what FFXI used to be pretty well.
By Dodik 2026-08-15 12:57:07
The starter gameplay loop is now what, Ambu +2 -> this stuff -> Odyssey/Empy?
You could argue this gear gives you some kind of a leg up on getting some empy+2, which gives you a leg up on Odyssey.
It's not a big leg up though.
But you're right, the progression is easier than grinding Omen for JSE, or grinding Dyna for JSE.
Probably still get papped trying to solo Empy+1 unlocks more than anything else.
So I don't see a new player tru soloing their way to Empy +2 or Odyssey V0 any time soon, and this gear isn't changing that.
IMO there's nothing wrong with being carried. It's a social game with social dynamics. Make friends. Lean on your LS. It's not leeching, it's not cheating. Just getting help.
You're wasting your time grinding intermediate gear that gets thrown away later. That's a fool's game.
*** buying clears from RMT though (not a thing, again, except on big servers).

I don't really see it as one universal loop. Someone who wants to increase their damage might go farm some escha gear or unity gear. Someone who just wants something to do might go farm other pieces of these sets because it's content they understand and don't need others for. Someone who is dead set on progressing as quickly as possible could use this stuff to farm malignance, which'd put them in a pretty good spot for upgrading empyrean.
I think there's a tendency for established players to look at things in terms of how to get there fastest or fully optimizing rewards over time. That wasn't always the case for many of us, and if SE believes they are getting substantial new players it makes a lot of sense to create horizontal options to give people something to do.
By Irvy 2026-08-15 13:04:25

What is this gear allowing to do that you couldn't do without it ? The main issue with progression as a new player isn't the gear, it is that trust IA is awful.
Also this is FFXI : you gear up for content, you do not gear on content.

New person said they got help with Bumba V1 and you tried to frame that negatively by calling it leeching or buying Thorny. That's not helpful.
They never said they bought it, they said they got help. Nothing wrong with getting help.
Nothing stopping anyone from farming escha or unm gear after getting some V1 clears, or after getting this gear, or anytime they want. Tons of options on what to do.
Helping make new players stronger so they can have those options is what established players should be doing. Not shaming them for wanting to get stronger.
Don't get me wrong I'm glad this gear exists and it would have been useful back when ambu+2 was all there was (and you had to grind months to get it).
But now there are other options. Which are sometimes easier and better.

If they contributed nothing, they leeched.
If the default method of advancement is to find a senior player to kill something you cannot contribute to, the game feels shallow. Whether or not you paid them 3m doesn't change that.
By Dodik 2026-08-15 13:23:28
You call it leeching I call it helping.
The point of helping someone get stronger is so they can meaningfully contribute next time around by getting stronger.
Since when did it become a bad thing for an LS member to help another.

When I started one year ago with my LS, they didn't have enough people so they helped me getting up to speed. At first we were only doing 6 bosses in sortie and now we kill Aminon hard mode.
FFXI is a team based game, because you get some help in the beginning doesn't mean you won't be the one helping later.

because you get some help in the beginning doesn't mean you won't be the one helping later. Absolutely!
Too bad 9 times out of 10 those who receive help suddenly just disappear a bit after you spent time/effort/resources on them.
Of course you can't tar everyone with the same brush. and I'm super glad there are people like you and I'm confident you're not the only one.
Still, sadly, people like you are alas pretty rare these days.

I don't think its 'teamwork' to help someone skip the entire progression and hollow out the pathway for people who don't want to do that. It wouldn't be 'teamwork' if you took a fresh 75 and got them a haidate on day 1. I'm not saying that anyone is immoral or a bad person for carrying/getting carried, but it seems easy enough to understand that it's bypassing most of the game.
I can see that a lot of people don't feel that way. It's especially apparent around the alliance content discussions. There's no consideration for balance or progression, only what gets you the most gear the quickest. It's almost like SE are the villains for making you engage with anything and you'd rather have an idle RPG.
By kaffy 2026-08-15 14:21:20
There is absolutely no direction to design at this point. Primes were the last thing with any forethought, whether you like Sortie or not.
Fujito and his few buddies are crammed into a broom closet somewhere at SE HQ and completely ignored unless Yoshida is having a bad day and needs some help (yet again).
Beseiged has had 3-4? updates after the initial revamp to 119 and is still completely useless.
Vana'Bout got chopped off at the knees when they realized no one really wanted to do any of that crap and had to cut the goal into a fraction of the original just so it could be acheived. They should have let us fail miserably and get pissed about failing.
Everything is an extended grind without any of the cool world building that gave people a sense of wonder and purpose. Why the *** are there mannequins of every job running around in Limbus? No one knows or cares, because neither does SE.
I'm 100% not saying you can't have fun playing XI these days, but the magic is definitely long gone. If they have identified these pain points in progression and need so much filler gear, why not adjust the original events and gear to better match today's progression? Because SE as a whole hates the game, and Fujito doesn't have enough power to make a difference.
If it were me, I would cease adding new gear entirely. The only exception is the cosmetic crap with no stats, enough people enjoy that evidently and it doesn't affect anything. No new content either. Just fix existing problems, draw a line in the sand as the "last" update and then true maintenance mode from then onward.

So helping someone get V1 clears is not teamwork and skips progression.
But skipping V5-V15 because "pointless" is not.
Got it.
We can't cry out for progression paths and also at the same time ignore the fact you need other people to team up with, and they need to be able to contribute eventually.

helping someone get V1 clears is not teamwork and skips progression. Carrying is not teamwork. The person being carried just has to exist. A fresh 99 who hasn't done any powering up cannot contribute in any way to a V1 clear in their bayld or sparks gear.
skipping V5-V15 because "pointless" is not. my brother in christ
Were you not part of the group a few weeks ago talking about letting people bump right to v15 fights being a good thing?? Clearing that V20 or V25 is teamwork (in most cases). Someone entered you, but all 6 members are doing something. If you have a 5 man carry for a buyer, that's no longer teamwork.
Both are instances of bypassing part of the progression.
Personally, I think that clearing V5 to V15 offers very little of interest or challenge. If you have Sortie gear, V5 vs V15 are effectively identical fights with nothing to overcome besides lockout timers and segment cost.
On the other hand, ambuscade, escha, omen, dyna+dynaD, vagary, HTBC, unity is a pretty wide swath of content. A new player can have months of soloable or small group activities that will be enjoyable and provide progress. Or, they can get carried through Odyssey and take most of the reward out of those pieces of content (they'll still do it for the later upgrades or niche pieces, but most of it becomes worthless and none of it is exciting any more).
It's not a matter of 'bypassing progression is bad', it's a matter of cutting things in a way that preserves gameplay. The gameplay loss from jumping sparks->Nyame is incredibly large compared to the gameplay loss of challenging V15 or V20 Odyssey instead of V0.
The goal of the game is actually meant to be occupying time, not making your character more powerful. If you were handed everything on login, it would be a pretty trash game. I think a lot of people are so addicted that they forget that and assume easier is always better. There's a balance to be struck and people will disagree on where that line falls.
