The damage boost is at it's peak when the window opens, but decays over time. That contradicts information that has been posted in this thread
Pasting what I sent in a message to someone who asked... This is a more detailed explanation.
Aero 1 IMMEDIATELY upon SC opening: 33600
Aero 1 @ 5 seconds left on skillchain: 38231
Aero 1 @ 1-2 seconds left on skillchain: 34803
Multiple times it was this hump of damage, no weather bonuses. So I've concluded that the start of the window is 0% damage bonus, middle of window is 10%, end of window is 0%. Thus you get more damage casting in the middle of the skillchain window.
That said, here was my gear set...
main="Wizard's Rod",
sub="Bunzi's Rod",
ammo="Ghastly Tathlum +1",
head="Wicce Petasos +3",
body="Spaekona's Coat +3",
hands="Wicce Gloves +3",
legs="Wicce Chausses +3",
feet="Wicce Sabots +3",
neck="Sorcerer's Stole +2",
waist="Acuity belt +1",
left_ear="Regal Earring",
right_ear="Wicce Earring +2",
left_ring="Freke Ring",
right_ring="Metamorph Ring +1",
back=cape.magic_int,
Back gives 5 MB, bunzi rod 10 MB, Wicce Legs 15 MB, BLM Neck 10 MB, for a total of 40 MB cap in gear. So this damage is either separate of the MB 1 and MB 2, but is definitely not MB 1.

I only added what was between the *
There is a bit of interchanging between SC window and MB window.
MB window is immediate. SC window is the earliest point you could use another WS that would continue the SC. If you think of your MB as a WS, landing it at the earliest point that would continue the SC would yield the highest bonus?

Serious post this time. Which would you pick? Please only consider these jobs after reading the following: SCH RDM and BST
I'm debating whether to get the shield or the rod. Shield would help RDM and BST, while rod is for SCH and RDM. I don't have highly augmented Bunzi and won't anytime soon, but the rest of my gear is decent. I use Myrkr in Sortie/Odyssey (Marin Staff), and as we don't always have a BRD for ballads, losing that would probably hurt.
Leaning more towards the shield as it will be big for RDM and BST, despite not using RDM too often. Just got BST Mythic and am finishing the Beitetsu stage. Although, I have no idea where it would be viable to full-time Killer Instinct or do 6-steps (other than for fun?) as I'm new to it in this era of the game.
If the rod is significally stronger than Marin and MP won't be an issue for SCH, then that's more appealing. However, I read that the MP save stat is only 5% and may not be enough. Combining it with the significant damage boost might be, but it's hard to know without having it. Are there other SCH's who have the rod and used it?
Thanks for any feedback.
I noticed with shield that I don’t need pet to 6 step my skillchains and that I can use my pet specifically for killer instinct and debuffs, making my BST more versatile since I don’t need to depend on a few pets for their specific skillchain properties. I can even use a pet like brainy waluis to burst debuffs on my opponent.

Can someone show berserk and aggressor duration timers with shield and gear?
The 25% is applied after the + seconds from gear. So for berserk, 3 min base, relic feet (30s), AF body (18s), ambu back (15s) + shield 25% = 5m4s. Could go longer with firangi if swapped but no need.
Aggressor has less + gear options, so you will be at 4m45s with gear and shield. So 2 merit needed to reduce timer to 4m40s to truly fulltime it

That's what I got when I did the maths, just wanted assurance it does in fact show that value in game. Vs duration, does Conquerer 119 really give +8.5% attack even if you swap it out though? If so it seems better to go for the potency than the duration and keep merits in berserk recast.

Maybe it's me Slib, but I read the "IMMEDIATELY" part as the beginning of the MB window and not the SC window as stated. It could go either way honestly so forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'd appreciate the clarification.

Which jobs did you test this on? Flametongue keeps sticking around in my top 3. My primary use case is going to be WAR with whatever I end up picking, and wondering if this makes WAR/NIN more useful than it has been.
Has anybody done any testing with Onion Sword III on WAR? That self SC opportunity has been what's keeping me from just taking the shield (or Flametongue, if it's really that good).

Yes it does give boost to attack, I use it for berserk ja activation all the time. It's the primary reason I made the mythic GA. I never actually use it aside from that. Expensive JA piece sure, but its worth it for the stylelock alone which was the secondary reason I made it.

Why does the shield not work on 2h? They are also "job abilities"

Because arbitrary rules.
Shadowlord is just a demon, but Provenance Watch isn't a dragon.
"reasons"
By Shiva.Myamoto 2025-05-18 08:25:17
The shield explicitly states "standard abilities". SP's do not fall into this category. They are classified as Special Abilities, and not simply Job Abilities, this is likely how they separated its function.
I don't know, but makes sense in the simplest way possible.
Asura.Eiryl

It also doesn't extend "stances" does it? Those are normal job abilities.
Solace
Composure
Majesty?
Retaliation?
/mnk counterstance?
Hasso Seigan? (they do nothing 1 handed but can you use them anyway and swap to 2handed, it's been too long i dont remember)
By Seun 2025-05-18 09:17:03
It will extend these abilities, though most of them are already capable of being up full time.

Is there any chance it can be used offhand with Tiz and be better than TP Bonus sword? I want to replace that thing so badly but I don't think Flametongue (or Ice Tongue) will do it.

What's the nominal difference, run the sim or simon will tell you as soon as he sees it.

I've been using it for a day now with Tizona and it feels like a wash or ahead of the tp.bonus sword. It hit significantly harder then tp sword at 2k tp (compared to 1750ish with tp sword) and tp phase feels better because I'm not missing as much with the off hand. They added fire effect is 100 percent proc (unless resited) and is an additional 200 to 350 dmg per att round (depending on monsters resistance) from the proc alone, not to mentionthe normal hit. I have not parsed it against the tp sword and thirbron may still beat it if you are wsing at 1500 tp but I think it's close enough that I'm not going back to it. Looking forward to seeing somone better then I do real testing but so far I'm very happy with Flanetounge.

It's these kinda of comments (on reddit, you slackers) that I wanted more of.
Quote: i picked the chocobo knife for some reason and i instantly regretted it and have been thinking about it ALL DAY. im a wreck.
The lockstyleset alone is worth it on that knife! Except there is already a level 1 dagger you can lockstyle this weapon.

Have to agree here, what paper maths says and what feels right (actually based on real world play and not theoretical) are different. You need a proper offhand for Kalunga V25 on BLU anyway? Or do people TP bonus it?

You can have weapons for different purposes. Magian OH is busted, and where applicable, is hard to beat. However, not everything is black and white. There may be times where your accuracy isn't ideal, especially on harder content or in lowman setups. I'm sure you could find ways to finagle around a High-Accuracy set, some sushi and other buffs, but if there's ever a scenario where your accuracy falls below a certain range (dispel, you die and lose SV buffs, SV buffs wear off, lowman and you don't have SV buffs or Distract or Precision or whatever), Flametongue is going to be a good sword. It has PDL, something that BLU sorely lacks a lot of, and 30 STR is nothing to scoff at (I keep Zantetsuken or R30 Sakpata's Sword around for certain cases). There might be a breakpoint with Aria/your overall PDL where TP Bonus OH is no longer the thing anymore, but I'm not great with math to tell you straight up. Still looks like an interesting pick for BLU.
I'd be interested in knowing what the rate of "Occasionally Absorbs Fire Damage" is - 5%? Not an insignificant magically defensive option where applicable. The Enfire is already pretty powerful, too bad you can't use it on Kalunga </3
Anyways, the weapon is interesting, so pick it if you like it and will use it, otherwise, you will continue making up reasons for why you shouldn't pick it. Most will probably have some form of confirmation bias or buyer's remorse after the fact regardless, so just pick whatever cool weapon you want to play with. It's a freebie, not a 6 month daily grind for an hour that will make you puke if you choose incorrectly :)

I used TP Bonus Offhand with Sushi and standard SV songs, and didn't have issues hitting on BLU, but I used Anvil Lightning and the rest of the top DD set to compensate. I don't believe you can use Flametongue on Kalunga though; he absorbs all fire damage iirc, and during aura, its like affinity, it might spike to like 10k fire absorbs a hit, lol
By Shukudai 2025-05-18 10:44:33
I get all that but then I'm stuck between Flametongue and Ice Brand. Ice works almost just as well as Flame but is obviously more magical oriented. I've been waiting for the testing to see, since they should be pretty comparable in a lot of situations.
Have never run the simulations so I'll see if I can figure that out before someone posts it :)
