Using /check in-game (A morality topic)
By wingath 2025-06-03 02:19:09
Would the check be more acceptable if the WHM was good at their job? I thought that was a very thought-provoking and sharp question.
Let me use a different situation as an example, rather than the current one.
What if, during an Omen boss fight, the White Mage was also meleeing? Suppose the first time they managed both melee and healing skillfully, and the boss was defeated smoothly?
Putting aside the question of whether such a “first time” even exists, would that behavior be tolerated a second time? Could it ever become a generally accepted strategy?
I think if they failed even once, they’d probably never get a second chance.
Cerberus.Kylos wrote very thoughtfully about the differences between Japanese and overseas players.
Japanese players tend to avoid risks. I believe I’m somewhat biased toward that way of thinking myself, so when I realize someone suddenly starts doing that kind of action, it makes me feel a little uneasy.
If there really is someone who is allowed to use /check mid-fight, it would be a player who regularly participates in content, shows excellent play skills, communicates well with everyone, and has earned the group’s trust.
I think I would tolerate that kind of person.
If I dealt a lot of damage:
/party Are you even human?
/check <stpc>
I’d reply:
/p ...Well — I’m a Galka.

This thread makes my head hurt.
The default in the game is being able to /check. You're checking data on SE's servers THAT THEY OWN. At the same time, your data, THAT THEY ALSO OWN, is available for everyone else to check.
If you need to default to "ask me first", you're creating a rule that does not exist. SE makes the rules. They could have implemented a confirmation box, but they did not.
I will always default to I check whatever I want. That being said, I almost never use that function because honestly, I don't care.
However, I agree that this has no place mid battle. Do your job, annoy people later - and if you ask me to refrain from doing something to you or your character, I will, because I respect your personal wishes and I value a working community.
But first, I default to being able to use a base function of the game, which /check is. When you play the game, you should accept that it's there until SE decides to eliminate it.
If youre so offended by the message, turn on the filter. Otherwise youre just asking to be triggered by your micro aggressions. Its a *** video game. How is someone supposed to be triggered if they can't see the trigger? Karen must know.
I do feel a strong bond to my characters that I've controlled for 20+ years, but looking under one's skirt is not a function of the game. My toons do not need protection from other toon-controllers looking at them. What the ***.

I will absolutely check everyone I see and I don't even feel bad. I like to look at gear, what it looks like, what other people use for gearing. I check myself even more. It is just a habit. Run around? F1, Enter, up, enter. Countless times.
If anyone has played Counter strike, its like spamming weapon switch.

If you need to default to "ask me first", you're creating a rule that does not exist. SE makes the rules.
There are also no law irl that says we need to say "excuse me" "thank you" "you're welcome" "may I?" when we interact with other people irl. Why do we still say those things all the time?
It's the same deal here. Social etiquette isn't a "rule" that you must follow. But if you are in a society(in this case, JP community) that a good number of people expect you to behave the certain way, not following it only puts you at an disadvantage when you interact socially.
(Just FYI, from my experience JP community actually has far more social expectations than just "ask before check", I can probably make a pretty long list here lol.)
A society also doesn't need logical reasons to expect people to behave in certain way. Social etiquette isn't rule/law based, it's pure human collective behavior.
If you never play on large JP server that are mainly JP, this social etiquette doesn't affect you. It only affects people who plays on JP heavy server and interact with JP community. For a mostly NA player server like Asura, this social etiquette is probably not as important because NA don't expect such etiquette, and Asura JP players are probably used to NA culture that they may not care that much.
For other players on other server, I think it's a good etiquette to follow if you intend to join JP party or LS. It doesn't really cost you anything to ask, and it creates a positive social impression. More pros to behave this way than cons imo.
There is nothing to get head hurt about this.

If JPs ever played Halo or Counterstrike they would be horrified by other players spamming the crouch key over their corpses.
Guilty of spamming /heal or /sit on a friend though.
Now that's what I call harassment. Volume :4

Idk about CS or Halo, but I've heard many JP live service games are region locked so they don't have to deal with foreigners.
Blue protocol is region locked pretty hardcore for example.

Irl, I dont concern myself with irrelevancies and /check is most definitely somewhere on the top of my list of irrelevancies considering we're also talking about a function inside a video game that does literally nothing to anybody but notify them.
That doesn't mean I dont say things like "thank you" in party/ls chat.
You're right tho, this is so high on the irrelevancy list that there's no reason to get a headache about it. I would probably also behave differently if I was surrounded by people who tell me I'm a *** behaving like that. Here, have a thumbs up.

This is very refreshing to read and all we have been trying to convey.
Noone was saying to ask every rando person before checking (if you're on a primarily JP server and checking everyone regardless you'll probably make a bad reputation for yourself, but that's your choice lol)
But joining (I assume) a JP linkshell and being asked politely to just be respectful and polite about something/action, you just do it or remove yourself from that environment.

Still going on?
/rant
PSA - check me whenever you want. The feature is in game for a reason and my personal space is in no way offended by someone curious about my gear....
If something is off on my gearset feel free to say so...I can take it (because I'm a human being not a Marshmallow) and you might help me..or I'll tell you why I disagree and maybe I'll help you....
Otherwise I'll always assume the /c is cause I'm awesome. Because I spent my life earning confidence so I have it.
The underspeak of the /c feature being some kind of personal space violation is the most millennial thing ever.

Basically this whole topic has boiled down to this. If you like being inconsiderate and trolling, you'll /c ANYONE repeatedly if they have asked you not to.
/C amounts to *** all in this day and age because damn near everyone swaps gear, EVERYONE who has an understanding that they can build sets for situations, which is literally the almost only way this game is played. You will quickly realize that sending the /c command gains you no new intel, until you ask an Uber player to specifically equip a set for a situation you are interested, it's absolutely pointless to /c people to get any gear set ideas out of it.
So anyways attempting to check any of your party IN THE MIDDLE OF A F'CKIN BATTLE.... While the player you're trying to scope out is swapping whole sets every 5 seconds to the point where they /c screen even pops up before you can even scroll through it is already midswap before you're booted because of change gear, meanwhile your tank just went down because you're the WHM and got distra/cted bein a newb.
Anyways this topic basically changed nothing. Turds r gonna turd, the rest of us will keep kickin *** and bring successful because we can cooperate and get along with others. There is nothing to see here more from this topic.

Meanwhile, in Japan, they used the a traditional Japanese style of loincloth(越中ふんどし/Echū fundoshi).
To be honest, I actually enjoy having casual chats like this much more—it's fun and I really like it.
I'll leave a useful URL here for reference.
https://matsurisumitaya.hamazo.tv/e7834373.html
This killed me, I was going through reading this thread and the way you dropped this has me laughing so hard.
I think others have mostly made the points I would of as well but I agree with most of what you said and some of the others. I think its about being respectful of the people you play with, its like avoiding sensitive chat topics or tapping your foot. If you want to be friends with other people you need to be willing to compromise on things, deciding what you can and cant is a personal choice.
I am not going to try and make that choice for anyone but I know who I would be inclined to invite to my party after this. I say all this as one of the most check happy people on the server, its a compulsion at this point and I am glad most people don't care but I would make an effort to stop if asked and wouldn't do it mid fight.
I will say all this focus on the "/check" when its more an issue of respectful play(by that I mean being focused on your job, having the meds/food you need, and being able to do your job). Kyos brought up the various viewpoints really well here.
Had someone else warp out of Omen today after using /check on them. The person was a Japanese player. They got too angry saying 気分が悪い (bad feeling).
Question is, am I bad for using /check on someone? Why do people get so angry in this day and age? Why don't the people just turn the /check filter on in their logs if they don't like it?
