The lack of flavor text on most new card is sad, need all that space to explain the cards now no room for sculpting the world's with words

My eyes definitely glaze over with all the new mechanics. It's grown exponentially needlessly complicated since I played. Even when I stopped it was getting ridiculous.

Last time I played was when the first planeswalkers were added (Lorwyn 07)
yeah now a days, cards can be so long and wordy they make the font smaller then normal:

Also cards like this whose type line is so long it's font gets reduced so it all fits:

The "Dwarf" thing is more than likely Wizard's attempt to have a catch-all typing for certain tribal effects across the game. They recently did an errata for certain one-named tribes (Viashino, Cephalid, Naga) and put them down as Lizards, Octopus, and Snakes respectively since they were all humanoid in some form. As off-putting as seeing a Tarutaru being labeled as a Dwarf, this makes perfect sense in a gameplay perspective.

===

So I've been playing MTG since Nemesis (roughly around 1998). One thing I've noticed over the years since after War of the Spark--a Planeswalker centric set--is that powercreep has been coming rampant but Wizards has been shortcutting a bunch of card designs by making the same card but either with a set-specific mechanic or just slightly higher stats. Rince repeat. One example of such is green's penchant for "bigger dudes with a truck ton of abilities". Like pic rel:

Flavor text does exist but is very seldom. The game has become slowly turning every card into an encyclopedia in of itself. They knew this, and banked on existing IPs (Lord of the Rings especially) to draw new players in. And it works. A fair number of people at my LGS have joined Magic during LotR.

Also to reference the above card, there's an inside joke on how Questing Beast has so much text that its hard to remember exactly what he does. So naturally, this was made as a joke:

Shantotto's dwarf typing is because there's a group of lalafel in XIV known as dwarves. Additionally tarutaru are basically lalafel cavemen in xiv. All of this together means dwarves are the lore accurate typing for the set.

better example of the textless is textless cryptic command, a card with 4 ways to resolve it.

You people are missing that in FFXIV, the Tarutaru equivalent are literally dwarves in one of the expansions. Beards and everything. I don't see how the Japanese playerbase can be confused by this when their own people made the connection years ago.

And after I typed this I saw Khajit already made that point but whatever I'm keeping it in.

Unrelated: I'm sad we never returned to Alara. I liked those sets and I want more blue artifact creatures with cool metal ***.

Shantotto is definitely going to be one of the first commanders I tinker around with when the FF set releases. Izzet big spell Voltron/fling sounds like a fun time. The art is beautiful on her card as well!

X can be quite a bit with enough blue cards in hand. Instant speed also.

She swings for 18 commander just for playing Fiery Emancipation lol.

Unless I'm misreading it, the card you played gets +X/+0, she doesn't. So, it would only be a useful effect when you're casting something that is not inherently a creature but can be transformed into a creature. Plus, it would also need haste or a way to use that power since it's only until EOT.

She does. How can you cast a "noncreature" card and give it + attack

(without another card to turn it into a creature, obviously)

MTG allows effects like this to exist, the +power just does nothing unless the card is turned into a creature. As worded in the card posted last page, that is how it would be played. But, after looking into it, it turns out the one posted last page is just a crappy (AI?) translation doctored into a card. The real card is:

(and it also has flavor text and a proper name)

They could have went with a better name for her I think. Tactician Magician sounds more like a scholar. But it does rhyme so it fits her I guess. My local card shop does commander on Friday and Saturday so I may just make a proxy of Shantotto and try her out for fun tonight.

Tactician magician is one of the windurst army ranks, I believe. Definitely a lot better than 'radical lady'.

It's a perfect name for an Izzet mage. Logic (tactician) Mage/wizard/sorcerer/caster/etc (magician). Blue. Red. It's perfect.

Quote:
Former minister of the Orastery, then head of the Parliament of Patriarchs, in the original game, Shantotto was one of the top minds in the Federation of Windurst.
Quote:
and her temper hotter than the magma flowing forth from the mighty Mount Yuhtunga

Literally Shantotto
Quote:
In addition to carrying out these functions, the Izzet members — obsessive, keen, and creative intellectuals, who often have short attention spans — are known to perform magical experiments, ever with reckless abandon and sometimes with spectacular but severe results.

I was more talking in a sense of job roles. Tactician Magician sounds like a scholar since they are literally the tacticians in 11 and not the title I would associate with a black mage, much less THE black mage of the series. I do agree that fit the izzet mages well though and Shantotto is extremely smart herself so it works.

It's definitely just a personal tism thing of taking some stuff literally and nothing actually wrong with the name lol. On one hand it's an absolute flavor win because it rhymes and would be something I could see her using as a title. On the other hand it feels like a slight flavor miss because it makes me think of scholars instead of black mages.

Surprising amount of cheers for 11 mention. As they went through each game showing 3~5 cards from each one.

AV almost a platinum angel. Stonger, more indepth, but you can still lose.
... If they add an Aegis and make the wearer untargetable, then it'll be damn near identical to 2003ish era magic. Which is kinda funny.

If played with 'Dragoon' (Player). Has a set bonus. If Wyvern dies, you receive a perma debuff on Dragoon card until another Wyvern can be called.

I'm not too hopeful, but it would be cool to see some SP abilities crop up in the set. Maybe an Adventurer card for each of a few jobs, with things like "Benediction: All creatures you control gain +0/+x until end of turn, where x is that creature's printed toughness" or "Invincible: Prevent all damage from creatures blocking or blocked by this creature until the end of the combat phase."

Not sure what mechanics M:tG has to make those once per summon of the creature, if you can just say it loses that ability once it's used, but I'm sure there's something for that.

Usually it'd be a sacrifice type thing.

Yeah, I don't get the hangup on the name. It was originally posted the other day on the @ffxi_jp twitter page (with japanese text on the card).

https://x.com/FFXI_JP/status/1920055179669614638

If anyone has ever paid attention to mtg spoiler season, it's very common for social media influencers to receive cards to showcase, and often across a wide range of languages. English mistranslations are common and to be expected.

The image I posted was the first attempt at an English translation I could find. I was just more excited that the set had FFXI representation finally (after months of only seeing stuff from 4, 6, 7, 10, and 14)
