FFXI Intro Music Removal (POL Viewer Only)
=====

Step 1: Go here (while POL/FFXI is not loaded at all).

C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\data\system\bgm

Step 2: Find this file and either move it somewhere safe or delete it (if your comfortable doing so).

Dolphin_(by_Noriko_Matsueda).113.bgw

Step 3: Enjoy never hearing that horrible music file again, an you get to keep sounds for the menu enabled. No more disabling all sound inside the pol config.

Share this knowledge with all others to end the tyranny that was this single track.

Bonus Step: If you hate the music from the very first launch of pol viewer when you perform clean installs then repeat step 2 with this file.

Filter_branch_(by_Noriko_Matsueda).118.bgw

Oh and one more, for right before you can setup any options just after registering heres the file for this one too.

Space_(by_Noriko_Matsueda).102.bgw

PS: Anytime POL Viewer has an update, these files will return. Just repeat the steps as needed to keep them gone.

I appreciate this info.

So often I’d be on a discord call then suddenly be deafened by by the POL music and be unable to hear anything lol.

If only the inital POL window had a BGM volume option so it can be lowered. Anyone happen to know the song name for this track? Would prefer to set this one as the default BGM.

I have a more simplified mod:

1. Launch the Pol

2. Hit the “Mute” button.

3. Thats it

PlayOnline has a config(PlayOnline Viewer Config) which lets you uncheck "enable sound" and that takes care of ALL music and sound effects and is never reverted by any update short of a complete POL reinstall.

As much as I enjoy a nostalgic listen to 'hairy worm' occasionally, I just could not do that every time I launch the game.

Does this work if the file is simply renamed instead of deleted?

I don't see why renaming the file wouldn't work, however when POL does it's update at some point (not to be confused with the main game updating as they are 2 different things) then you'd just find the song(s) re-downloaded by their file check an replace process. An then you'd have that and your renamed file so I don't think that'd be wise to let them pile up over time.

To be clear, outright deleting the songs has no negative effect from my own testing.

I can confirm that unless the pol update occurs, the changes stay in effect. There is no crashing or etc from this.

This works, doesn't require any faffing about with files, doesn't get affected by updates, and has no negative side effects.

For folks saying to just use POL config, POL config will mute all of PlayOnline completely. So, just to reiterate what OP said more clearly, this mod/fix removes the Playonline background music BUT still keeps the sound effects associated with navigating POL menus, login, etc.

This music is kind of like fire alarm beeps in peoples houses or trains that pass by every day behind your house, your brain just tunes it out if it's a annoying and regular. When I login my multiple characters I don't even really notice the music at all anymore, it's still there but it just doesn't register unless I specifically try to notice it.

I think people who return notice it and it bothers them, but if you play every day and login with it you just tune it out completely after a while.

You are correct Felgarr.

As for the haters..

Problem 1: Omg just mute the pc already.
Reason: Some tire of doing this, especially for over 20 years.

Problem 2: Ugh just check the box in config to mute.
Reason: Other things can cause this to not work/mute anymore.

Problem 3: Grow up an just tune it out like the rest of us.
Reason: There are people other than yourself who just can't.

I didn't post this fix to service haters, I did this for people that aren't haters. One would think that with all the "advice" haters love to "give" they'd take some of their own an try to simply see things from the other perspective.

PS: Those who think #2 listed here isn't true have not done enough things in the IT field to understand that anything in technology can break an often do without warning or reason.

this one isn't true, but i respect that some people might, for whatever reason, want the awful sound effects without the awful background music

file check or playonline update undoes your method, nothing short of wiping the registry or changing pcs undoes the checkbox
