So a week ago I learned if you ws ixion with X# ws's at a low hp his horn will break. I saw a video of someone taking it to 30% and using about 30-40ws's to break it. I was doing that method, and it worked every time.

3 days ago, I SC'd it to 10% on accident and decided to do tachi:hobaku on it and hope to break it. I missed how many i did the first time and didn't notice the horn break but it broke fast. I got the chest and metal.

Second day, I took it to 15% and proceeded to hobaku it down to break horn. I also missed horn break again (wifey and kids yelling at me for stuff lol) and killed it hobakuing to death. Noticed chest was there when it died.

Today, I said ok I'm paying attention. Took it to 15% did 9 hobakus and it broke. So what I think may be the way to break horn is take it to very low HP use a proc low level weapon and do several stun ws's to break horn. I will try again tomorrow after taking to 10% and count how many. As of now i can 100% say I did 9 at 15% and it broke by 9% average 2k a ws.

If anyone else wants to test this and help me confirm I would appreciate the data! Makes F boss way easier for sure!

Speculation:
Probably an inverse likelihood of breaking horn with current HP on WS.
So maybe Proc Rate=(1-enemyHP%)-.50.
So at 49% you hav a 1% chance to break the horn, and at 1% you have a 49% chance to break the horn.

Enemy must survive the WS to trigger the horn breaking.
edit: obviously much lower rate than that. maybe =(1.enemyHP%)-.75.

15% 11 Hobaku's and it broke around 9% with chest drop. So far 15% seems to be the magic number for me.

Since you're kinda deadset on figuring it out, I would try 1D swords, daggers and multihit ws (whatever sam can do... vorpal blade?) or quint spear and penta thrust

See if it's literally ws or hits of ws

What does the metal even do to Gartell? I would guess it's based on his hands. Makes his absorb less likely to steal buffs? Stun/gravity/silence misses? Doesn't change hands? I'm wondering if groups would even bother to get this metal, unless it's groups whoo already struggle with it. Curious if you have any information on how his behavior has changed since getting metal.

Thunder Hands, no more enStun
Wind Hands, no more enGravity.

Do you need to WS from the front? Does energy drain work?

Can you just use SAM with the UNM GKT for it from 30%?

Just use Twinned Blade, everyone should have one from the mission line, the DMG will be to high from the UNM GK, or even the Soboro. Ixion is squishy.

It's horrible... interrupts the skillchain a lot.

Gartell only has one TP move with Stun, the rest is from his auto, Can typically take Gartell out on SAM in less than 75 seconds with the metal, without its a crap shoot. You can become stunned locked, and if your lucky and he starts in wind mode he'll eventually go into thunder mode and start the stun locking.

I use Soboro. I tried to use a random dagger weaponskill today and did like 30 from 20%-10% and didnt proc. Used soboro to hobaku as usual and it broke horn quickly.

I wonder if it is related to the effect on the NM, so only stun and knock back might break the horn. Someone bring BLU to Sortie to find out!

I don't know, from what he has been saying it sounds like it needs to do some dmg but not too much. This was one of the early predictions (x number of ws under y damage) that was demoed sometimes, but not consistent as nothing seems to be.
Maybe SAM isn't that good for it, maybe use the RDM with a weak club WS?

Wondering this as well, since both Hobaku and Smash Axe are reported to work. Does normal stun spell land or get resisted? Anyone try Flat Blade or Leg Sweep?

Went back and forth with Heghmoh a little bit back in October, been breaking daily ever since... Still cant nail down what the mechanic is, everyday same buffs, same WS, seems the amount of WS's varies. With 4 doing Flat Blade from the front, using Twinned Blade, no WS gear usually breaks the horn with in a minute from starting the low DMG weapon skills.

Once accidently brought it down to 11% and was thinking, never gonna get the horn to break now and it broke with in seconds. But tried to reproduced that and never went well. Thankfully Ixion has a move which restore HP allowing for recovery by just white DMGing, but a lot safer/faster to start 20~30%.

Never seen a single stun land from flat blade or leg sweep... I'm sure a BLU has tried stunning this before. I'm thinking its immune and we're already breaking the horn without these parameters.

My guess is...

  • WS DMG base around HP

  • Amount of WS's performed base around HP

  • Something to do with Crits

If can break it reliably best way to figure it out is change one thing at a time until it stops breaking. Then back track.

If you can break it from 11, start at 10. Then 9-5 until it stops.

Start again from when it stopped breaking but with lower dmg WS, remove gear. If it breaks with more low dmg ws then it's WS number.

If not it's based on HP percentage somehow, start again from last HP percentage it broke but lower WS number this time. So forth.

No ones ever managed to break it above 30% hp iirc it's definitely tied to hp

Not that it's certain it can't be broke at 99% just the chance is very low.

Super random but after listening to this person's FFXI BGM remixes (do recommend) I checked out the rest of their page and what do you know, they posted this video a year ago of horn breaking after using Vorpal Blade (@17:35**, Thanks Zeig, also hi!), though they were testing a bunch of other WS too (@15:30 onward)

Clicked on their "Jeweled Bougds" rendition and they desecrated a perfect song ><. I will check the others in their collection out (I am unfairly biased towards any rendition of this specific song), but do not ever ruin the greatest song Naoshi Mizuta has ever composed. periodt
