New games suck... or is it just me?

Assassin's Creed games have been the same since....the first one? I played the first a decade ago and it was the same game back then. The whole gameplay is repeating the same-y quest in a big world for 18 hours.
I see you are back a posting stupid again!

If you're an autismo home taught developer now it's actually tough to get into the game industry, they want to hire DEI for investor reasons instead. It ain't DEI. Its corporate culture and "professionalism."
When gaming studios were lean and hungry they took chances on self educated, no credentials just a portfolio, types. Once they got big enough to hire CEOs and CFOs they started to get picky.
Software development followed the exact sane trajectory in the 8080 through 386 days, well before DEI was invented.
Let's be realistic here....
If you are a company owner who just start a company and want to hire a group of Dev to make a game. You know the importance of writing a clean, well structured code but you can't tell the quality of the code by looking at them.
2 people applied, one of them is an ex technical director from a big company with 10 years of experience who also has a CS degree from the best University in the US. Another one is self-taught.
Is it possible that the self-taught candidate who is genius that writes better code without going to school. But it's hard to tell unless you write good code yourself and understand what it means to write good code. In this case it's simply easier to hire by looking at the degree.
I don't know if this counts as corporate culture. I can see people hire this way even if they just start an indie team. Only because this kind of hiring practice makes things easier.

Have you even played the first AC before you comment on other people's opinion on AC1?
What's wrong about saying AC1 is super repetitive? It's literally how the game is.

Remember the backlash on Ezio trilogy? That pile of woke trash where we play with an afro-gay baker who seduces the Pope?
Is that what you mean by they all being the same since AC1? Cause I played them until Unity, and they all felt different enough to keep me engaged.
Everyone played AC till Black Flag for the story-telling and the amazing characters. You are trying to hide the DEI-woke trash that made current AC fail. From Ezio Auditore da Firenze to gay affro samurai..

I am talking about the game mechanics, not story nor characters. I know every AC has different story and characters, if you enjoy the story good for you.
I didn't play AC for story nor characters though, I play for gameplay. And I personally find the core gameplay loop repetitive, even if they add different systems in different game it isn't varied enough for me. Origins added rpg system and it isn't enough to change my opinion on core game loops.
But I guess we just look for different things in action games.

I can't comment on shadows but I know I really, really dislike AC1 and origins gameplay. I highly doubt I would like any AC gameplay personally. Woke or not.

If you didn't play it for the story, why did you play it at all? You are better off playing Tetris.

When AC1 was out what looked interesting to me was the art style and assassin gameplay. I liked the idea of playing an assassin simulation game with stealth/combat so I gave it a try.
It turns out the assassin simulation aspect lacks variety and depth.
If I want a game for story, I would get a narrative focused game. AC1 certainly didn't advertise as narrative focused game back then. It advertise as assassin action game with stealth/combat. But both stealth/combat in AC1 wasn't the best.
I also gave AC Origins a try because I like rpg, it turns out their rpg mechanics is super simple too. Open world + repetitive quests also isn't fun.
Either way, it's common for me to try new games. Some works and some doesn't. AC just happened to be one of the IP that didn't work for me.

Guy who plays romance novel games consisting of pressing A over and over and over after a bit of dialog (aka a story based gamer) plays AC for reasons that dont involve the story at all.
Wat???

Huh? I am not "story only" gamer. I play pretty wide variety of games. Narrative game is one genre out of many genre that I played.
You are right, I didn't play AC for story. I play Disco Elysim or 13 sentinel aegis rim kind of game for story, not AC. I always see AC as combat/stealth action game with rpg elements later on, not a game build to focus on telling story.

I would have say no, but considering FFXIAH timestamp, it took 1 minute 8 seconds for you to search, read, come back to FFXIAH, quote and reply.
I would say that you did all of that surprinsingly fast considering you should have waited for a response.

Back in 2000 Japanese H-game industry used to have pretty well-crafted story that can stand on it's own even without porn elements. Good stories like Fate Stay Night, Tsukihime, Air, Phantom of Inferno etc all ended up having anime adaptations that isn't R18 because the story is still good without them.
Fate is probably the most successful adult game IP in the world.
This industry also promoted several superstar writers who eventually write for anime industry like Kinoko Nasu, Gen Urobuchi and Jun Maeda.
These days many Japanese R18 games is just "get to the NSFW part as fast as possible, bonus points with weird kinks!". Very few H-games are well-known for good story anymore. This industry is truly the representation of this new game sucks thread title.

complaining about story in eroge is about the same as complaining about story in a porn movie.

Either way, I think I found a pretty strong evidence that Panta isn't light-aligned after all :D.

Nynja, what's your take on Equinox: Homecoming?
By Dodik 2025-05-06 06:43:10
Panta, your new profile picture is disturbing as all hell.
So is Negan's for that matter. I dislike AI art even more now.
So... I have been increasingly frustrated with new games over years. I feel like so much effort it placed on graphics, lighting, art style, ect and maybe 10% of that effort is placed into gameplay, controls, and story.
My latest purchase was Visions of Mana, which I was pretty excited for. Secret of Mana is in my top 5 all time, I've played Seiken Densetsu 3 translated and while I didn't think it was as good as Secret of Mana, it was still extremely enjoyable. I skipped Trials of Mana since I had already played Seiken Densetsu 3. Vision is just bad. The english voice acting was awful, the characters were bland/generic or just stupid, and I was 3hrs into the game and all I was doing to running 30seconds between CS. Felt like a slightly interactive shitty anime.
Hogwarts Legacy, Visions of Mana, Baldur's Gate 3, Starfield... I felt like all of these super hyped games were absolute duds. Final Fantasy 16 is coming to PC in a few weeks and I'm not sure if I even want to try it anymore. I've heard people say not great things about it.
I know I'm just venting a bit here, but it really sucks being excited for a new game and then the crushing disappointment when it's not fun.
