I'm sorry, but I dont believe that metric.
1-What do those numbers look like when you remove "games" like Candy Crush or Flappy Bird?
2-How many of those females have a penis? If you're wondering why I would ask such a "bigoted transphobic" thing, here you go.
I'm not saying "female gamers dont exist", I'm saying its not 50/50

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Just downloaded this
I hope it's total garbage, so I can stop playing it because I have too many things to play now. Let me know how it is. I feel like its popularity has been astro turfed.
I literally didn't even hear or see anything about it until about 3 days ago. Now it's apparently the best RPG of all time or some ***.
So far it's pretty good, remember it's an Indie game so no big PR budget and marketing department pushing ad videos or social media takes. Lots of Indie games are like that, you won't hear about them until they land or are about to land and someone in the community gets a whiff. We have become to accustomed to AAA studios buying hype that we get suspicious when it's missing.

The vast majority of games are bought by men. If every woman right now stopped buying games the industry would lose a lot of money, if every man stopped buying games the entire industry would collapse overnight.
Men dominate employment, but women make up about half of the consumer base. I think the industry would collapse overnight regardless of which half of it's foundation was removed.
We're talking about a specific product "games" here, female gamers are an extreme minority in the industry, though they do exist. RA is absolutely correct, if all women stopped buying games tomorrow, there would be some money lost but life would go on. If all men stopped buying games tomorrow, the entire industry would cease to exist. The entire reason the alphabet mafia was able to sell their poison was the claim they would "expand the target audience", they claimed they could attract large amounts of females to buy that product. It would be like if all women stopped buying sporting goods tomorrow, what would happen to bass pro shops.
Women are responsible for approximately 80% of all consumer spending. Corporate suits see that, then see less then 10% of their customers are women and then decide they need to remedy that.

Wrong... look at how many mithras, tall female elvaans and even female tarus there are in Asura. They all have a very deep voice when they join discord, but, hey... might be the plastic in our food.

Men and women has pretty different gaming preference. So if you only play "bro games" then yeah, you won't see many women because women play different games from you.
https://www.rivaltech.com/women-in-gaming-report
You see, when it comes to game motivation preference men prefer competition, destruction and strategy (I assume strategy means min-max here), this isn't the case for women. Women prefer completion, fantasy and design.
Animal crossing is one example that is very popular among females. It has pretty strong social/design aspect in it.
Animal crossing New horizons sold 47 millions btw, if 0 female buys it it'll instantly lose 23.5m sales since male:female ratio is indeed roughly 50:50 for that game. That's about 1 Elden ring/Wukong worth of sales loss.
Female not buying games may not affect bro games like fighting game or FPS that much, it'll affect animal crossing type of games way more.
Also according to this chart female also prefers story slightly more than men, which is relevant for the female game writer discussion.

I mean, theyre removed by default because theyre not games. Theyre junk filler that people play when theyre bored, theyre taking a ***or on public transit. Theyre 5 minute fillers.
1-What do those numbers look like when you remove "games" like Candy Crush or Flappy Bird? No ones ever been excited to get home from a shitty day at work/school and unwind playing candy crush.

Tablet games have things pretty balanced between them, console / PC video games are a very different story.
Unfortunately depending on how someone defines "gamer" and mixes the data they can generate whatever conclusion they desire. If we use "anyone who has ever played anything game like anytime in their life", then we get the entire human population under the age of 50 and that's pretty well split ~49/51 depending. Once we start selecting out for platform, cost or degree then we each gender kinda falls into a different camp. All those simple time passing tablet/phone games get lots of female customers. PC / Console action, RPG, strategy, esports / etc. games lean very heavily towards men.
My wife is a perfect example of this, she absolutely loaths "video games" and doesn't like fantasy or action or pretty much anything we would discuss here on the forum. She also has Candy Crush and one other Candy Crush clone on her phone / tablet that she plays when she's bored. Many biased outlets would gladly pile her into the "female gaming girl" category, while she would look at them weirdly and considers games a waste of money. Money she could better spend on shoes, clothing or cosmetics (I am not kidding).

On steam forums that is the general consensus. The devs are actively taking feedback and the biggest requests are about ultra widescreen support / FOV changing and loosening up on the restrictions on the dodge / parry system as they are a tad too tight right now.

Women constitute a minority in anything us on this forum would classify as "gaming". This is evident in game sales data.
Thankfully Valve tracks all this information in their Steam usage statistics.

Of course people in here are stuck in 2004 and think that phone GAMES do not count as games when that makes up a lot of the industry today.
The industry as a whole was the topic, not nerds flexing their steam library.
"Out of $187 billion generated in 2024 by all types of games, the mobile game market share is 49% or $92 billion. (Newzoo)"
The whole scope of the thread is "new games suck" right? Not "new games that aren't mobile games suck"

For the purposes of this topic they are not. They are an entirely separate market, mixing them is an attempt at a bad faith argument.

That's because of the demographic of this forum being old men.
The most hilarious thing is that a lot of the highest grossing mobile games are made by the eastern 'non-woke' developers this place seems to love.
(Games like Genshin were mentioned btw, a game making a lot of money from being on phones).

Again this is a bad faith argument. The term "gamers" is not the same as "game users", attempting to switch them out is bad faith.
"Gamers" is a term denoting people who's hobby is gaming. Game users is anyone who's every used any video game. Just because you drive a car does not make you an auto hobbyist. Just because you walk to get someplace does not make you a hiker.
We are discussing people who's hobbies include gaming as those are the individuals who will spend $40 to $80 USD to buy a video game, or $500+ to buy a console, or a couple grand to build a gaming computer.
F2P Tablet / Phone games largely generate revenue as a form of legalized gambling.

You're the one trying to gate the term. A lot of gamers will play more hours on their phones than they will on their consoles etc. It's still a hobby either way. PUBG mobile is absolutely massive, are the people that play that game not gamers.
Most games these days have loot boxes, microtransactions and "legalized gambling". Look at the money games like FIFA (now EAFC) makes from this. Again surely that is scope for discussion in this thread as to why new games suck right?

In the US it's about 60/40 for PUBG mobile.
It depends what platform CoD makes the most money on now doesn't it? :)
CoD Warzone is f2p and has lootboxes. Sounds a lot like mobile games too yeah?
There was a point in time where if you played on consoles you weren't a real gamer and were casual too. Times change.
Dismissing mobile as a gaming platform is the same as people were doing years ago with Nintendo consoles saying they were for kids so don't count. Strange how that is another platform with a lot of female gamers. If you don't play all your game on steam and aren't a straight male in their 20's-30's you can't be a gamer it seems.
Anyway to the original point...gaming companies are making not far off the same amount of money from women as they are from men now so that should be reflected in demographic of the workforce too. However there's usually only around 20-35% women working at major gaming companies and the percentage is lower than that for development and senior roles. If these major gaming companies lost a lot of their revenue from their mobile gaming divisions they would be screwed.

"Gamers" is a term denoting people who's hobby is gaming. Game users is anyone who's every used any video game. Just because you drive a car does not make you an auto hobbyist. Just because you walk to get someplace does not make you a hiker.
It's always meant someone who plays games regularly. verb er typically means the same thing with some exceptions for slang. I feel like we should probably call it something else if it's different. At least, maybe not use the on purpose generic term to denote something more specific.

And considering the amount of hours that mobile gamers can put in (and the amount of money) surely it is a hobby for them anyway.
To correct Saevel's auto hobbyist analogy here...it's actually about the type of car you are interested in rather than if you are interested in them or not. And that to me just sounds like gatekeeping.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Game_Award_for_Game_of_the_Year
Mobile games are so popular and respected among the gaming community these great amazingly popular cash cows been nominated for GOTY zero times in the last decade.
0/62 lol
No PUBG doesnt count, it was nominated in 2017 and Mobile released in 2018.
So... I have been increasingly frustrated with new games over years. I feel like so much effort it placed on graphics, lighting, art style, ect and maybe 10% of that effort is placed into gameplay, controls, and story.
My latest purchase was Visions of Mana, which I was pretty excited for. Secret of Mana is in my top 5 all time, I've played Seiken Densetsu 3 translated and while I didn't think it was as good as Secret of Mana, it was still extremely enjoyable. I skipped Trials of Mana since I had already played Seiken Densetsu 3. Vision is just bad. The english voice acting was awful, the characters were bland/generic or just stupid, and I was 3hrs into the game and all I was doing to running 30seconds between CS. Felt like a slightly interactive shitty anime.
Hogwarts Legacy, Visions of Mana, Baldur's Gate 3, Starfield... I felt like all of these super hyped games were absolute duds. Final Fantasy 16 is coming to PC in a few weeks and I'm not sure if I even want to try it anymore. I've heard people say not great things about it.
I know I'm just venting a bit here, but it really sucks being excited for a new game and then the crushing disappointment when it's not fun.
