shows the mindset of the developers[/b]. If a game has pretty girls in it and a little fan service in it, then it's a massive signpost on the product that you know it's being made to cater to the customer far more and there is going to be far less or none of the other obnoxious crap in it people are sick and tired of.
A bit of a necro to the conversation, but this is extremely poignant.
I absolutely see these types of woke style "signposts" from the other side all over way too much...when I see them, my default position is to avoid. Period.
Do I miss some great stuff? For sure..but I'm confident I'm saving myself from an endless assault of ideology I just frankly don't prescribe to.
Feel free to throw hate all you want, but if you actually want to understand the way people unlike you think, you may want to notice especially if your goal is catering to a consumer base that is vastly larger then any of you (the proverbial you, not anyone here in particular) are willing to accept.
Edit: for "my side" we also shut down and allowed for an industry to go in a direction (from about 2018-current) because WE assumed the customer base had changed. However, new revelations and sales numbers have revealed, quite clearly , that it was all untrue. You can still drive to force feed the consumer, but it's clearly failing.

Some of you who hating on SE yet you still treat them like an insurance company. You don't have to give them any of your money for their productions/services at all and that's including FFXI. You with multiple accounts, that's like buying a new SE game once every month and they are truly graceful of it. lol

Up to HR 100 now on Monster Hunter, been no lifing it on the weekends and after work. PC friends are still having optimization problems every day, but its running smoothly on PS5. Game is probably a little too easy, especially with Rank 8 weapons. Only a couple of hunts now that give us problems. Tempered Gore Magala got a triple kill the other day and ended the hunt immediately. That was fun.

All male protagonists have to be over 180cm, ripped, extremely athletic, wear suits, expensive watches or otherwise part of some royal family. You forgot the angst part.
Also they don't have to know they are otherwise part of some royal family.
Yes but the viewer knows and the generic female stand-in will find out eventually.

I picked.up Robocop for $10.
Pretty cheesy, bad voice acting. But it really pays homage to the original movies.
It's pretty fun for what it is. You are basically a walking tank mowing down hordes of bad guys. Game takes place in the 80s. So you are able to throw CRT Monitors/Tube TVs at enemies and stuff lmao.
I'm amazed that certain things have cool physics (small propane cannisters, etc.when punctured will fly around)
But some decorations are static... (A shelf with spray paint cans is just 1 object.)
Amazing that Half Life 2, FEAR, and Battlefield had some nice interactive environments. But newer games these days still use invincible static meshes for a lot of background items.
I was hoping it would scratch the Deus Ex itch in a way but it falls short some what.
For $10 though it's worth grabbing.

Sadly we have run out of things to do in Monster Hunter. There is no real endgame right now and there is no content coming until April. Fortunately, baseball season is upon us and MLB the show comes out on Tuesday.

Finally someone in Japan said it!
Quote: Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai was recently awarded the Art Encouragement Prize from the Japanese government’s Agency for Cultural Affairs for his remarkable achievement with the 'Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games' YouTube channel.
As part of that, he conducted an interview with Entax (thanks, Automaton) in which he stressed a need for Japanese developers to focus on creating games with domestic appeal rather than trying to cater to Western tastes.
When asked how Japan can keep up with booming gaming markets in regions such as China, Sakurai simply stated “It’s not really my own idea, but as an industry trend, I think Japanese people should keep pursuing the things that Japanese people like".
He goes on to say that the success of Japanese games in the West had led many teams in the region to join a growing trend of "making Americanised works". However, he doesn't necessarily believe that Western gamers are looking for this, stating "I think that they seek the uniqueness and fun of Japanese games".
His comment comes at an interesting time for Silent Hill fans, of all people. Though not relevant for the Switch, as such (maybe the Switch 2, though..?), the recent transmission broadcast for Silent Hill f highlighted a desire to bring the series back to its Japanese roots, with series producer Motoi Okamoto stating "As [Silent Hill] was based in the West for the longest time, it felt like the Japanese influence was fading". As such, the latest entry will be the first to take place solely in Japan.
Masahiro Sakurai stressed that his opinion is just one way of looking at the topic, but we think it's a pretty sound approach. We love Japanese games here at Nintendo Life because they're so distinctly Japanese, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/03/sakurai-says-japanese-developers-should-avoid-trying-to-appeal-to-western-tastes
Square won't listen, but maybe some of the other Japanese companies will.

AC: Shadows has " over 1 million players playing in the first 24 hours", but the steam charts peaked at 41k.
Who here believes that there are 960+++ thousand AC:Shadows players on console? Has any multi-playform game ever had a 96% playershare go on console over PC?
edit: Forgot Ubisoft might have their own store too (why use steam then?!?)

Haven't played since Black Flag but this one actually looks good. It helps that I am a sucker for games set in or around the Sengoku period.

If a game sold a million copies, they would say it sold a million copies. Public companies are not allowed to lie to shareholders, so if they use different wording like "players" they didn't sell a million copies. Ubisoft have their own multi game launcher and a subscription service to play al their games. It's likely most of these didn't buy the game at all. Also, so many people worked on this and it took so long, they have to sell bare minimum 4-5 million + to break even anyway.
Lying about popularity works to push sales and that's why they do it. People are sheep, and they like to be around other sheep.
I don't think the game is bombing just cause of the main character. I think it's bombing cause they have driven this franchise into the ground, and people are bored to death of it. It's the same tedious game over and over again, and the writing and obnoxious pandering has become insufferable to boot. It doesn't help they make the game boring and grindy on purpose to sell the solution to that in the cash shop too.

There is no evidence to suggest Shadows is "bombing." Over a million sales on the first day is anything but.

It hasn't sold a million copies, they are fooling people. The reason they said players instead of sales is because of this
"subscribe to play assassins creed shadows for $17.99 a month"
Worst case scenario is it's free to people who already are subbed and they made no money, best case is people will play the entire game for $18 and ubsub. $18 is a lot less than $90.
Under these circumstances it should be showing off about 10 million "players", not 1.

Given your penchant for making ***up on a daily basis, you are going to have to cite an actual source that reflects their sales.

cite an actual source that reflects their sales.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sale
specifically : the transfer of ownership of and title to property from one person to another for a price
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/player
a person who plays a game
If the game is available on their $18/month subscription service, then anyone who plays it through that service is still a player. That does not mean they are a sale. Every article citing the 1M number is saying players.

That doesn't give RA free reign to declare how many copies the game has or has not sold. He has no idea, which is normal for him. My original statement stands, there is no evidence to suggest that Shadows is "bombing."

They're never going to say how many copies sold unless it surpasses previous titles.
So by the metric that they're not willing to yell it out (just like 16) you can only conclude it hasn't done "as well as they hoped"
And seeing as how "as well as we hoped" means "oh ***we're screwed cause this cost a quarter billion dollars!" that's "not good"
So there's some colorful language but the result is the same.

Pff, first of all it hasn't even hit the launch weekend yet. So while RA is eager for one his conspiracies to finally come true, it's way too early.
Secondly, I'm sure that Ubisoft is hoping that Shadows matches Valhalla's numbers. But they would probably take Odyssey's. So far, there is no reason to believe that 1. the game won't at least equal Valhalla and 2. Ubisoft is unhappy and finally 3. Shadows is bombing.

So while RA is eager for one his conspiracies to finally come true https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/conspiracy
1
: the act of conspiring together
They were accused of conspiracy to commit murder.
2
a
: an agreement among conspirators
uncovered a conspiracy against the government
b
: a group of conspirators
a conspiracy made up of disgruntled aristocrats
Maybe you mean conspiracy theory?
: a theory that explains an event or set of circumstances as the result of a secret plot by usually powerful conspirators
Still doesn't fit. There's no secret plot behind woke games failing. They fail because more and more westerners are sick of paying for entertainment and receiving a lecture.

You're choosing the wrong hill to die on. This isn't Veilguard, this is Assassin's Creed. Ubisoft might be struggling right now, but this is still one of the most successful single player franchises out there. Valhalla made a billion dollars for them. Odyssey sold over 10 million copies. There is no evidence to suggest this game is going to fail, especially given it's early returns and the setting. Having a female lead doesn't make a game woke.
So... I have been increasingly frustrated with new games over years. I feel like so much effort it placed on graphics, lighting, art style, ect and maybe 10% of that effort is placed into gameplay, controls, and story.
My latest purchase was Visions of Mana, which I was pretty excited for. Secret of Mana is in my top 5 all time, I've played Seiken Densetsu 3 translated and while I didn't think it was as good as Secret of Mana, it was still extremely enjoyable. I skipped Trials of Mana since I had already played Seiken Densetsu 3. Vision is just bad. The english voice acting was awful, the characters were bland/generic or just stupid, and I was 3hrs into the game and all I was doing to running 30seconds between CS. Felt like a slightly interactive shitty anime.
Hogwarts Legacy, Visions of Mana, Baldur's Gate 3, Starfield... I felt like all of these super hyped games were absolute duds. Final Fantasy 16 is coming to PC in a few weeks and I'm not sure if I even want to try it anymore. I've heard people say not great things about it.
I know I'm just venting a bit here, but it really sucks being excited for a new game and then the crushing disappointment when it's not fun.
