There used to be dedicated dat websites and modding was kind of a big deal in relation to XI, especially in Japan. My guess is that the kinds of players that were heavily into modding went to another game, and the ones that remained were more of the +1 grinder type players.

People still make and use dats but it's much smaller than it was.

There isn't really much of a hub for modding as there was.

I had a lot of fun back in the day with it, and seeing some of the things people created was incredible. After a while i just kind of stopped liking it and preferred the original designs overall. I did keep some menu and icon things and very few custom dats. Not sure why i just stopped.

Always sad when things kind of go away, there was that one site that tried to compile everything but it went poof recently.

Some of those dats are pretty awesome, so I might if you haven't.

I've tried a few times. The ones that have the dats aint giving em up.. lol.. I'm trying to learn how to do it myself but it's an uphill battle. The dat community is still the FF community.. so yeah gl
