I like that even after all these years, SquareEnix still finds ways to surprise me with how derpy their spaghetti code really is.
Do you think the limit was 65,535 or something? I know in hexadecimal code FFFF is used in programming often which ends with that number. At the high-water-mark of servers, the populations back then were only like 8,000~10,000 active daily players on any average server or so. I would guess SE didn't expect the game to ever last long enough to use up all of those slots. Even if EVERYONE of that average playerbase quit and restarted, just on a single server, that entire server wipe could happen 6x ~ 8x over before that many slots were used.
If anything, I do think this may wind up forcing the issue to be addressed; possibly with server dispersion or consolidation. I think we all probably figured they either would never touch the way it is or would finally do one last server merge.
If forced, I say we all bumrush Lakshmi and make it Asura Jr. because of this post:
Dear God, just don't let anyone new come to lakshmi I like it how it is already
#blameAvereith
#Laksura (Lakshmi x Asura) is kind of a hot lesbian ship too.

Congratulations. You played yourself. Lakshmi is the new Asura.
