It had been acting up for a bit, telling me I was running out of room and needed to delete stuff. Finally it said 100% full and shut down.

The tech tried plugging it into a functional PC as an external drive hoping that window's disk recovery system could at least get it running enough to extract data. It locked his machine and got hot.

He is not a data recovery specialist. Is there any chance that anything could be recovered from this inert lump of silicon by a specialist? Other than slim or fat.

Thanks.

Not a good sign if it locked up another PC. Unless you want to shell out money for data recovery, your best bet is probably try formatting it and seeing if it works again.

Well it locked mine up first.

And it is not going to work again.

Thanks anyway, I needed an optimistic reply!

It shouldn't have "shut down" just from being full and that secondary issues sounds bad. Worst you can do is shop around for services and see if they'll look then quote, etc.

That second issue sounds like something out of a nightmare.

Try to boot into another PC but in recovery mode and see if you can at least see the drive and its specifications. If you can't even see it then it's probably off to the professional.

If you actually can see the drive then maybe ask the tech guy to clone the drive somewhere and see if you can get something back.
