SE certainly has the legal high ground to ban any breech of the TOS.
but if anyone really wants to insist on vanilla client because of this, then I suggest you open your eyes, take a few breaths and try to wake up your brain and THINK for a bit.
SE has the legal Highground, but not the Moral Highground.
I got the itch to play FFXI again in 2015. I tried playing on a private server first. (Mostly because I was testing if my kids were interested enough to play it, and it wasn't a free 2 weeks campaign, they weren't all that interested because its a difficult game to get into.)
I really had fun multi-boxing on the private server though.
Moreso I wanted to play on the official servers again.
When I resubbed, though, I KNEW I would NOT play the game again without Windower.
There are so many tedious delays in the UI. billions of layers of menus. Poor support for gear swapping , which is a central game mechanic.... also the tedious syntax for typing commands, and Animation lock! How about having to cancel status effects to cast new ones?
There are just so many nuances that distract from actual gameplay and irritate the player.
Its nothing new. How many players would quit if they didn't have windower or Ashta?
SE has made SOME strides (very slowly) to improve the UI over the years... and they have been mentioned a bit earlier in the thread. ie Equipsets instead of just 6 lines of macros, and timers on buffs... but its really a case of too little and too late.
If Square Enix came up with a technical way to restrict 3rd party tools.. say and update to the client that had 100% great security and you COULD not use any 3rd party tools...
How many people would unsubscribe?
I would. Its just too cumbersome. SE would FIRST need to make a ton of QoL and game engine updates for that to fly.
As has been said many times, there are MANY things SE could do to track down and ban people. but they OBVIOUSLY don't.
It only stands to reason that they are aware of how widely used Windower and Ashita are. and as has been said, they put up with it.
OBVIOUSLY because the revenue stream would be gone otherwise.
They are NOT willing/able to update the game in a MEANINGful way for interface or say... Direct X 11~12, or the menu's etc...
but at the same time, they still want all the subscribers.
Does anyone disagree? Does anyone NOT believe that the game would be in SERIOUS trouble of ending completely, if they really could ban everyone using windower or ashita?
The game is in large part still alive BECAUSE of 3rd party tools.
With this premise, how can Square Enix have the MORAL high ground about fully enforcing player bans for 3rd party tools?
Square Enix has been Reaping the profits from those 3rd party tools. How many millions of dollars would they NOT have without the voluntary work of people making Windower and all the best addons?
How do you fix it and make it all straight and above board and clear? Well Square Enix would either need to upgrade the engine and UI so that no one would bother with windower. OR upgrade the ToS for some allowances and clarify the position.
Changing the ToS for that kind of flexibility is a murky legal battleground and expensive. Upgrading the game engine is EXPENSIVE.
so instead they reap the profits from 3rd party apps and ban the people they think might be harming the game while intimidating the rest of us to be wary what lines we cross.
I am not going to quietly tolerate criticism on the forums of those taking a morally condescending position to those who use 3rd party apps. The ToS is a legal agreement. Legal is not always moral. SE is being just as shady about it for their own profit.
SE is playing the same grey game. The players know it. SE knows it. Any other choice right now would mean no game. SE doesn't want that and we don't want that.
