To be clear, I'm not excited about all the gathering at the protests. But outside+masks is at least the better set of circumstances. We won't know for sure how much it matters for another week or so, but if you look at the East Asian countries where mask wearing is socially ingrained, they've fared FAR better, even with fewer lockdowns and restrictions.

If Americans could be trusted to use masks properly - and the official advice given from everywhere wasn't uniformly confused and bad - we probably could have weathered this without any lockdown at all (or at least a very minimal one). School's tricky because kids, especially younger ones, can't be trusted to handle it properly, but it's all moot for now anyway.

I've lived in NYC for ages, midtown does not look like a warzone lol. It is one of the nicest areas in Manhattan that is modern and doesn't look antiquated or like a ghetto. It is completely changed from say the 70~90s. I live in Hells Kitchen, and it is beautiful. The name meant something in the past but now its one of the more fancier areas and yet everything was boarded up, broken into, glass everywhere. Really suspicious looking people out on the streets in groups, if you lived here you would see that the riots were not fabricated by any means. However, you can check any YouTube video to see that.

I agree with you on a place being an echo chamber, one of the primary reasons I stopped posting on BG. I'm glad to have some discussion from different viewpoints but we can't jump to attack someone for disagreeing either. And no, indoor/outdoor is not a meaningless distinction. Even with bigger numbers, you have more room to move outside, and, for the last time, MASKS. It matters a lot less how packed in you are if the droplets aren't getting that far out from you. So like I said, if the Tulsa event is masked up, then have a blast, y'all.

This is one of the reasons I am hesitant on fully buying into how dangerous this is. The news sources are all over the place on this and just from a regular persons perspective, they see all the rioting and protesters (where people are huddled together) and they aren't dropping like flies. Something is not adding up. Also, no American wants to be wearing a mask for ages. People used to think people wearing masks were extremely odd, outside of this pandemic. Mostly it would be Asians wearing masks, and a lot of people thought they were just ill or something, I don't want that to be a standard (in my opinion.)

Its easily debunked by simply pointing at the serious rise in cases that started in Texas, Alabama, Arizona, and Florida over 2 weeks ago, before any rioting took place. We also know how easily the virus spreads indoors as compared to outdoors, where all of these protests are taking place.

Its much safer to be outside wearing a mask while not social distancing than it is to be inside an enclosed space with the same amount of people. There is a reason all these sports leagues are returning to empty stadiums. Its not by choice, they would much rather make their billions, I can assure you.

Many of those rioters went INTO confined spaces such as stores, to loot. MANY of them were NOT wearing masks, you can clearly see that in the myriad videos of said looting and protesting.

Well, unlike so many diseases where kids are ground zero petri dishes that facilitate spreading diseases like wildfires (seriously, in a short time frame before schools shut down I got a cold and two strains of flu that my kids brought home), scientists seem pretty divided on what role kids will play in spreading Covid-19, if any.

Either way, the lack of basic sanitation practices among the public in general and the lack of empathy among many businesses and schools for illness-related absences is a culture that needs to change quickly. Even after the pandemic, I would be happy to live in a society where people wear masks (especially if they're sick) without other people thinking that they're about to rob whatever store/bank/etc. they're in.

What you're saying really doesn't make sense to me. No it was not exaggerated, it happened in literally every democratic city you can think of, and then some. Tons of stores looted and there were barricades placed everywhere with plywood shoved into each opening of stores. I personally saw it two blocks from my home. I'm not sure how someone can really say the rioting was exaggerated. As for your fabrication, you only gave one example so I wouldn't call that common.

To bring it all back, I can care about more than one issue at a time. Just because I commented on the rioting doesn't mean I place it above importance on something else. However, I have my own theories about COVID. The original picture someone brought in was accurate though. Just because that mass of people huddled together like sardines was outside, doesn't mean there is no transmission possible. I can't imagine how anyone can look at those pictures, of thousands of people packed together, and say there isn't much transmission risk.

It was already touched upon by democrats saying that they would take the risk of the virus (killing old people and those with pre-existing conditions) to fight for their justice. Obviously they put lives on the line for their own cause and went against their own mandates.
