The issue is that as a vet I also realize that military service is not for everyone and that's hard to swallow as I think we should have required military service. All these people bitching about no money for college, no money for food, stuck in dead end town, military service would get you all of those. It is a dream I'd like to see but on same token we had a guy that was forced to enlist because he got into some minor trouble with the law and someone said it would be a good idea. Guy was a total shitbag.

There is the concept of universal public service which includes military service but isn't limited to it.
IIRC Starship Troopers had universal service with a twist. You didn't have to serve but only those who had served were allowed to vote.
